this looks cool, very smart indeed. I'm sure it's another large step in the direction things are going. But the question comes to me - are we controlling our lives too much? Categorizing everything just a bit too much. This sense of control is truly an illusion in the grand scheme of things.

My first impression was similar to yours.

My second impression was: Oh no! This is just another magazine app-- we have lots of those, where 1 or 2 should suffice (ala book readers).

My third impression was: Wait a minute-- this is just an aggregator app-- and one with a pretty slick UI... there could be something to this.

If this is sufficiently customizable, and well implemented, it could bring the "stuff that interests me at the moment" to me in a "magical" way.

It could be kind of a "living Me Magazine"-- containing all the stuff that interests me, at my fingertips.

They show aggregation of FaceBook and Twitter (where's YouTube). What if I could add to that, say, sections for:

-- the forum threads I'm currently monitoring on AI or MR?
-- Financial (or other news) that interests me-- Earnings calls for AAPL, MSFT, etc.
-- local news and weather.
-- LiveCasts that I follow
-- my email and IMs
-- ratings/reviews on that new car/computer/camera I am consitering
-- news, photos, videos schedules, maps for the grandkids soccer games/practices
-- my calendar and contacts
-- those shopping lists I am making for: kids back to school clothes/supplies, groceries...

FlipBoard, then, would become more a UI element like CoverFlow"... kinda' a hyper app...

Then, take the concept a bit further-- To a corporate network, where the servers are secure and private (to the enterprise)... Doument storage and retrieval; collaboration; presentations; meetings...

.

This is the Microsoft way of thinking. And why Apple is taking over everything.

You want it to do everything.

Running a service via central servers rather than having stand alone apps is a big cost for a company. Look out of some bigscale advertising or data harvesting in the future to recoup that investment.

Why are you acting as if there is some conspiracy theory going on?

They have already mentioned that they will be doing ads etc.

LOL: "Sitting-on-the-couch lifestyle of iPad media consumption"

I was wondering if other Apple products are tied to some sort of lifestyle:

The having-more-music-than-I-would-ever-be-able-to-listen-to lifestyle of the iPod Classic
The I-do-sports-all-the-time lifestyle of the iPod Shuffle
The working-on-Photoshop-all-day lifestyle of the Mac Pro
The typing-on-the-metro lifestyle of the MacBook Air
The scrolling-without-a-scrollwheel lifestyle of the Magic Mouse

Why are you acting as if there is some conspiracy theory going on?

Where did I say that there was a conspiracy?

It is clear what sort of thing that they may do with this data - but folks need to weigh that up and decide whether it's a worthwhile risk to trust them. It's difficult to 'un-trust' them at a later date.

Thanks, an interesting article.

the company plans to explore advertising and subscription models as well as revenue sharing with publishers.

And that advertising and publishing will be based on your harvested personal data of course.

Why is this getting so much press? It's like the top story right now on Techmeme too. I don't think it's all that great personally. It's just...meh...

Replied to bump because I want to thank you for starting a thread about actually doing stuff with the ipad, instead of all the nonsense here about peoples reasons for wanting one/not wanting one/bitching about stuff that I would rather they kept to themselves. App looks good - I shall give it a spin :)

That video looked awesome. That is how apps on the iPad should run. If I didn't loathe, abhor, and detest all Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, etc. so much I might have a use for it.

It's a Jazz remake of flim by 'The Bad Plus'. The Bad Plus are a great band who do a lot of 'covers' like this - they're perfectly legit and 'copyright compliant'. Search for them on YouTube - they play this live and it's awesome.

The Bad Plus FTW...check out These Are Vistas for some great modern jazz.

For those worried about privacy and security issues with their Facebook and Twitter accounts, here's a thought:

Don't add them to this app.

There's plenty of other content you can use this app to read and it will get better as it's updated. You're not required to use your social networking credentials to enjoy this app.

Love it so far, I can't add my twitter or facebook. Server errors? Other than that, I really like it...

Just downloaded it and used it dor about 10 minutes and its fantastic!

Can i add more squares though?

I'm sure its free now but they will add iAd soon after with an "update".

Eric

Yeah, this is pretty sweet! Just spent a little while browsing articles, pictures, etc. And I LOVE that it's free!

I'm still having issues with connecting Facebook and Twitter though. Says that Flipboard is over capacity :(

What is Macrumor's policy when it comes to making a front page story about an app? This almost seems like an advertisement.
