I normally get the Flu shot every year and last year for the first time i was really ill. Seemed like full blown Flu. I am on the fence this year as to if I will get it or not.

I seem to be alright after mine last Wednesday. It was my first, so I was a bit concerned at first. Had a sore arm for a few days.

... I'm not generally one who falls for various conspiracy theories but I swear, nearly everyone I know who got a flu shot has been sick right after it. ...

Got a flu shot a little over a week ago.

Have not been sick at all since.

I've never gotten sick from getting the flu shot, nor have I ever had the flu. The worst reaction I've ever had was a sore arm for a day or two.

Personally, I rank vaccinations right up there in the top 3 medical advancements of all time. While I know they are not 100% effective, I'd never want to be without them.

People say they have "the flu", when they have a cold. The flu shot will not prevent a cold. When you get influenza, you will likely be on your back for days with temperatures over 102. It is hellish misery.

Or norovirus... my family physician was quick to point out that there is technically no such thing as a "stomach flu"; stomachs can't have respiratory illnesses.

It's been pointed out to me (by medical personnel and wannabes) that it's impossible to get the flu from a flu shot, so rather than offer my conjecture, I'll simply state the facts.

In the past 25 years I've had three flu shots. In the past 25 years, I've gotten the flu each of those three times. I've never gotten the flu in a year when I did not get the shot.

Draw your own conclusions.

anecdotal evidence galore in this thread, so I guess i'll offer mine. I live with a roommate in an apartment who has the flu. He's been sick since last monday. We share the same bathroom, shower, kitchen space, and living room. I got my flu shot early october. I haven't been sick at all or even felt tired really.

Sadly I'm required to get the flu shot while dealing with the patient population. Each year the flu shot is a combination of the most popular strains of the previous 2-3 years. They are categorized by h and n. Hemagluttinin and neuraminidase are proteins that are found on the surface of the virus used for fusion and replication. ( ie. H1n1). You're not getting sick from the flu shot but body is obviously going to mount an attack to the particles to develop an immune response.

Flu shots contain only a killed virus. It is impossible to get the flu from the shot. That said, it takes about two weeks to develop immunity to the strains of flu in the flu shot. The vaccine does NOT protect you from every strain of flu out there, just the most common ones. If you get sick, it's for one of many reasons. You haven't developed immunity yet, you were infected with a virus that wasn't the flu, or a strain not covered by the vaccine. Get your flu shot, NOW. I'm a nurse.

Only had the flu shot once....after that, I was in bed for days with a fever. Never got the shot again.... Never been that sick again :shrugs: I'll always turn it down when my doctor ask if I want one

Apart from rare reactions, the symptoms caused by the flu shot tend to be very mild - soreness at the injection site, or a brief low-grade fever and aches. In any case, they're usually much less severe than the flu itself.

One thing to remember for young people who say that they don't need the vaccine: you may be easily able to withstand the flu (though it does tend to be worse than typical viral upper respiratory infections), but if you're near people who are at greater risk for any reason (age, chronic illness, and so on), consider getting the shot for their sake. That's one reason why the vaccine is recommended for healthcare workers, who may unknowingly spread the flu to patients.

Love that the same people who are critical of flu shots, ignore science and say "the flu shot made me sick!" are the first to criticize those who question the extent of global warming.

Get. A. Flu. Shot. If you are worried about getting sick, see an allergist. How many immunocompromised people have to die before we get with it?

The Flu Virus and the Danger of What If

Me neither, but I still need to get one for this season. Of note, my understanding is that a flu shot does not prevent you from getting flu, but it reduces the impact.

There are many strains of flu and the shot only protects against a subset of those. As others have mentioned, many people also conflate a 'common cold' with influenza and think their shot was not efficacious.

Uhmmm, where do you get the notion flu shots have been available for only 2-3 years? I've been getting them for 20+ years.

So much misinformation in this thread. Except for snberk.

I got my information from the fact that I am a British citizen and so-called flu shots only became prevalent in the last couple of years. Perhaps they have been contaminating US people for 20+ years but that is simply your hard luck for living in that open experimentation camp. Unfortunately the demons-that-be have now spread their experimentation - along with the insidious Americana culture - all over the world. God help us.

BS post of the week. Congratulations.

My last 5 year experience. Not making anything from it yet.

3 years Flu shots = Full fledged full week of being miserable with a fever, sore throat, and runny/stuffy nose. This was all 3 years.

2 years no shots = One year had only a 2 day short lived fever. No sore throat and only mild runny/stuffy nose. The other year, didn't get sick at all.

For children and elderly, I recommend Flu shots.

For Adults, eating right and being overall in good shape is probably the best way to avoid Flu symptoms.

I have had the vaccines annually for many years because I don't like getting influenza, and never had any kind of reaction. Nor have I had influenza. But I have caught colds, which the flu shot does not protect against.

How absurd! First he gives his proof that having a flu shot made him violently sick for a prolonged period of time, then he recommends the same virus shot to kids and old people! Madness!

For Adults, eating right and being overall in good shape is probably the best way to avoid Flu symptoms.

Correction: For EVERYBODY, eating right...

If people weren't addicted to eating nonsense just to gratify the tongue, that once it passes over that organ into the oesophagus, creates only malady (sickness), they would not even have to consider ridiculous things like flu shots. If your auto-immune system was at its correct strength, you would be automatically protected by it from viruses like flu. It is the ingestion of harmful and damaging so-called food products like cotton-wool buns with entrail burgers (Big Macs), any animal product whatsoever, principally meat, the list goes on. Please wake up and do some research to save your lives.
