Look, we don’t need the usual “who even wants a foldable?” takes. Congrats you’re not into it. But some of us are actually pumped to see Apple finally try something different with the iPhone. Novel concept right? It’s not for everyone and that’s fine but spare us the dramatic eye rolls while we enjoy something that isn’t just the same rectangle for the 17th year in a row.
This product isn't for me, but I understand Apple's interest in entering the high-end foldable market, where devices command premium prices. Apple likely won't brand it as an iPhone, instead positioning it as a hybrid of an iPhone and a compact iPad. They should avoid "book" to prevent confusion with e-readers. A name like "Apple Fold" fits, emphasizing its unique form factor, as "iPhone Fold" sounds clunky. They may give it its own category, making room for larger models down the line, like an Apple Fold Ultra.

An iPad already is just a bigger iPhone?

It's not, it runs a different version of iOS, iPad OS, which with iPad OS 26 introduces a few different things, like app windows, real background tasks, etc.

I assume they will bring back the simplified split-screen from iPadOS and a bigger dock at the minimum.

That would be interesting, I wonder how it would mesh with the changes in iPadOS 26

This is truly the first piece of Apple hardware that excites me since the iPhone X. Everything since has been very iterative, good products still, but just not exciting.

If the foldable will be a good product is another story, but at least it's a device I am really looking forward to. I am really curious to hear more rumours and know if they can pull it off. I hope so, because I would definitely get one.

I really hope it operates as an iPad (ie. effectively running iPadOS) when unfolded.

I'm still iffy on actually getting it due to the rumored price though. Combining my iPhone and iPad Mini would be great but I don't upgrade them at the same time which spreads out the cost.

I am surprised the number of foldable phones people are using in international business class seating.

I think many on this forum who claim "I don't want it!!" will also be shocked.

I've noticed a surprising number of Folds and Flips out in the wild.

Completely agree! I’m not sure I’m the target customer for this but I’m excited to see what they come out with. And I may end up wanting one!

I had no interest in Vision Pro until I did the demo. Then I realized all the ways I could enjoy it. But posting anything positive just receives the same tired wet blanket responses from the same people.

If Apple can bring something like this to market, it has the potential to completely revolutionise mobile computing. I would line up outside an Apple store right now if it guaranteed me one of these new iPhones on day one.

I can’t say I’m too interested in a foldable phone so far.

I don’t see the allure of a foldable iPhone as well.

While the price will be a challenge it can be a really interesting device. Look at the Google Pixel 9 Fold as an example of one of the first good modern takes. When folded it just feels like a normal smartphone (admittedly a bit thicker than the current iPhones), but then unfolds for a an iPad mini like screen.

If I am remembering correctly, the last rumors stated that the internal screen would be about 7.8" with a 4:3 aspect ratio. This is close to taking the current iPad mini and removing the top inch or 0.75" of the screen when in portrait. For many people this will extend up the usability of their smartphone. Or some it will allow them to consolidate devices.

For me, I am interested in this as a way to potentially merge my iPhone and iPad mini into a single device. The fold will have a much better display than the mini. My manga and comic reading has shifted over to my larger iPad Pro due to eyesight, but I still use the mini for ebooks and in situations where an iPad Pro is a bit much - such as being a passenger in a car or sitting with my rabbits. Now instead of having to grab a second device I could simply unfold my iPhone to have a much more usable, but still nonintrusive device that doesn't draw much attention to itself.

This would also be a way to bring split screen functionality to an iPhone. Ultimately it just makes your pocket computer more capable, but for a price.

more like when Galaxy Fold turn 10 years old. Still folding phone a niche one, i don’t see much in the wild despite multiple companies releasing it.
