Sure, make a “small” iPhone for the 5 people that want one…
The mini didn’t sell compared to the larger ones, the market has spoken.
Apple has spoken. No Pro (no) mini. Now imagine a Pro mini with this laughable big pill. Where is an in-display fingerprint sensor?

That's...not an iPhone anymore.

Sort of unfair that we're getting some sort of a folding Apple phone (or "iPhone" if they want to call it that) for the 5 people who want one, but not a normal-sized iPhone. Both are minorities, I just feel like a small, iPhone 5 sized version of an iPhone in 2025/2026 is something people want more than a folding tablet.
Probably you can find "a small, iPhone 5 sized version of an iPhone" called a burn phone down at your local gas station store. Just not from Apple.

I look at that render, and I see the most useless idea in the history of technology.

There is a reason why phones are all around a certain size, and tablets are all around a certain size. Foldables simply create a product that is too big to be a phone and too small to be a tablet. Worthless, is the word.
Although personally the foldable phone will probably not provide the camera characteristics that I need, it will be a useful product for many. If made well it will sell well.

Mini sold better than Max. Pro Max stayed because it made more revenue in smaller numbers, not because it was more popular. It's more difficult and a lot more expensive to engineer and produce a really good small iPhone with Pro features without a camera bump than it is to make a phablet with humongous cameras. Cook's Apple is taking the easy way to profit, Jobs's Apple would take the hard way towards a better product. That's the difference between Cook and Jobs, Cook doesn't care about the product.
You apparently were not paying attention. The market drove all phone vendors to making bigger phones, including Apple. Your Cook/Jobs commentary is flat wrong.

This could be the hottest foldable when it launches because it won’t have the amateur-hour crease.

this is a mini phone! It just happens to unfold to an iPad too! I’m super excited. I’ll be upgrading from my 12mini to this. Maybe. Hopefully.

LMAO. 25 million devices worldwide from all OEMs for all of 2024 is a rounding error. That's less than half of what just iPhone does in one quarter.

There are enough tech heads around the world to buy anything and everything that comes on to the market, for a time. Eventually they languish and move on to other things. Only the best products actually have staying power. Or, they're propped up by other revenue streams by a company that wants the image of selling a certain product. Hence why the Pixel still exists.

Foldable is a trend that is already peaking. Apple can maybe grab a few last desperate sales from that market, but it will likely be a 1 generation product like Vision Pro, assuming they are dumb enough to actually release it.
25 million devices that cost at least $1800 is more than a rounding error. And these are Android devices. The average price of an Android phone is significantly less than the average iPhone price. Apple customers are far less price sensitive and quite a bit more passionate about their devices. It won’t sell at anywhere near the same level as the standard iPhone or the Pro but I’d wager it easily reaches the 5-10 million mark. At $2000, that’s still $10-20 Billion in revenue from that one model, a number that dwarfs the revenue from the AVP or iPhone Mini.

Not really interested in a folding phone or ipad. I am more weary of Cooks behavior when it comes to squeezing money from customers. If the folding concept means he can get a couple more dollars from everyone, Apple will convert the entire lineup.

Yeah, this ****. Cook is an Accountant. He views the world in $, not in innovation.

Out of all of that, the only thing I want is Touch ID.

Unlocking your phone without looking at it is something I truly miss.

Bring back Touch ID, you cowards!

How can he get them to pay for that if they don't want it. People buy what they want. They have choices whether Android or iPhone, continue using an existing phone for more years, buying used. They have choices so when Apple offers some very high priced new phone they can exercise any of those choices. But yes, the evil Tim probably does consider if some potential new product can make Apple more money. I know I won't be buying it. I probably won't buy any new phone for a few more years

Cook is used to people blindly buying the newest Apple thing. Apple have really hit the skids with quality over just mindlessly pumping out an Apple version of product X

I am still salty over him killing off the analog audio jack on the iphone. 🤣

It seems to have the general aspect ratio of the Pixel Fold, which was considered the best foldable to use closed.
That lasted just a generation...

Think it will be very much like a Z Fold with a price of $1999 for the starting variant. Will be great if it has three cameras like the Z Fold. Will be very disappointing if it misses out on the zoom lens. Cannot imagine paying around $2000 for a device with no zoom lens/camera.

When I ignore the fact I have no need for an iPhone that folds into an iPad on the go, I feel this device would be far above a price point I would want to pay. I paid £1200 for my iPhone 16 Pro Max and now realise I should have just bought a 15 Pro Max and saved about £300. It is essenitally the same phone, albeit slightly smaller, and does not have that camera control gimmick that I never use. I learned my lesson not to buy the current device and expect something significantly different.

I looked at a friends Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 at the weekend and the screen was creased and the phone just didn't feel as durable as normal smartphone to me. I also dread to think how a screeen protector would look on a folding screen as there is no way I'd use any phone without one. Tempered glass are out of the question and a return to plastic films is a horrible thought. Not for me, sorry Apple.

The rumored screen diagonals, when taken together, imply an aspect ratio close to 1:√2 (1:1.414) for both screens, resulting in screen dimensions around 3.18” x 4.49” and 6.35” x 4.49”. The aspect ratio of both screens being the same makes sense, because it means an app can be switched from the outer to the inner screen (or vice versa) without having to change its layout. Apps would not even need to be aware that they are switched.

And these aspect ratios would be quite different from the rendering in the article.
The rendering isnt particularly accurate, for one thing Apple would never have icons spanning the the fold. the rendering doesn't even show a hinge.

Day One. Small pocket device that expands to a mini tablet for Civ VII or Slay the Spire 2... dream phone baby

Oppos new foldable is smaller and thinner than the ProMax when closed.

True, but it doesn’t even roughly match the form factor implied by the leaked data.
