Until these portables can become your personal computer in every sense, I mean docking to a monitor to turn it into an iMac, then it's just everyone crowd funding the tech that gets us there. Because the price you pay for all this tablet only, phone only tech is just silly when it can obviously do more than they let us do.

If this is correct this will be a very awkward device when it’s folded. The outer screen is going to be really short and wide
Finally something iPhone 12/13 Mini sized again (when closed)!
It won’t be. Screen diagonal isn’t everything, the aspect ratio is a big deal. This will be close to a 3:2 aspect ratio when folded, so that 5.5” will be larger in area and wider than an iPhone 6 Plus, and those were big phones

As an owner of multiple folding android phones I can't wait for the apple version. Really don't understand the reliability concerns you all have as some of mine are a fair few years old now and still in full working order. Who doesn't want a phone that can turn into a tablet when needed? I'm sure all of you would find use cases for it.

We'll see. I may or may not be interested in this. I'm not too keen on having a phone larger than my mini again though. But when closed, this one doesn’t look too bad.

yeah super weird to have a low density inner screen
It’s not exactly low density, the not-much-larger iPad mini has only 326 DPI. So it will be significantly higher-resolution than an iPad mini. But it’s unusual in that 428 DPI is a number we haven’t seen before on Apple devices.

“…the iPhone 17 Air, which is expected to replace the "Plus" model in Apple's smartphone lineup this year.”

What the….? 🤬 So if you want the bigger screen real estate, but don’t want a flimsy phone that will bend and break, you have to pay for the Pro Max? Tim Cook is 💩.

The Plus sold below expectations, so they’re trying something new.

If this is at 2500 dollars im getting one...under that price would be wonderful. Right now im just worried about the tariff situation jacking up the price!

According to this leak, the inner screen will have around 428 DPI, unusual.

Inner vs. outer screen:

So weird. iOS is arranged for taller aspect ratios, when you subtract the area for the keyboard and status bar it seems like this would be cramped vertically (the outer screen that is, which I’d be using 90% of the time, personally)

But ipad is lcd and iPhone is oled. Amoled needs to time the ppi by 2/3

I worry a bit about the keyboard too, but otherwise it’s close to the basic iPad’s aspect ratio, and pretty much the same aspect ratio as standard A-series paper.

Making the outer display wider makes sense insofar as it makes the inner display even wider, suitable for video.

It’s only a little shorter (around 6%) than the original iPhone in aspect ratio too.

Not necessarily, if it’s like the iPad Pro OLED pixel structure:

This is how much real estate the keyboard took up on the original iPhone. We’d have to add another row above the entry box for predictive text. I remember those days, where you could only see like 1-2 texts on the screen at a time when the keyboard was up lol

Yeah, but given the physical width of the display (wider than the Pro Max) they can trade off the height of the keys to the width. Or in other words, keep the physical height of the keyboard from the much tinier OG iPhone screen the same, just stretch it horizontally to the much larger Fold screen width, and you’ll gain a lot of height on the rest of the screen.

And there’s always the inner screen as an alternative, when you have to type more.

They can a bit, but not enough to make up for losing over a full inch of vertical real estate. The entire keyboard on my 14 Plus is only maybe 1.25-1.5” tall. You could maybe scrape back a quarter of an inch before the keyboard is too cramped vertically, plus it will throw off everyone’s muscle memory ha

As I said, I’m a bit worried to, and there’s certainly a trade-off, but I don’t think it’s unworkable. On the flip side, the taller you make the outer display, the more square the inner display becomes, and thus less suitable for video and similar “landscape” use cases.

First off all, Cook isn’t designing any hardware. Second of all its very rich of you to assume it’s going to be flimsy, bend and break, without even knowing anything specific about a rumored device. Calm yourself down.
