From what I recall, one of the main things iPhone mini users like about it is that since it's not as wide as a larger iPhone, it's easier for them to hold it, and to perform some onscreen actions using only the thumb of the hand they're using to hold it. The rumored greater width of the iPhone Fold won't allow for that--refer to the mockup in the photo above posted by klasma.

Yeah it definitely won’t be good for one-handed use, but at this point we who prefer small phones are so pathetically desperate we will take whatever tiny victory we can get lol. At least its significant shortness and less significant wideness compared to current iPhones should enable it to fit better in many pockets, assuming it’s not too thick folded.

But if Apple makes a flip iPhone, it will probably be much more enticing to us than this fold.

As I said, I’m a bit worried to, and there’s certainly a trade-off, but I don’t think it’s unworkable. On the flip side, the taller you make the outer display, the more square the inner display becomes, and thus less suitable for video and similar “landscape” use cases.
I hear ya. That’s true, but making the outer screen taller wouldn’t take any width away from the width of the inner display, you’d just have more height, so video will be the same size regardless just with larger borders if the content is widescreen. Plus a more square inner screen is really nice for multitasking, in my experience with my Fold 3

As an Nokia Communicator user in the real old days, I wonder if this foldable from Apple will have as an optional way of using the half-way unfolded phone as a really small desktop or laptop, placed on a table 90 degrees opened, writing on a display keyboard on the table and looking at a display 70-90 degrees in front of you? BTW: Perhaps I am the only one in this forum (and even elsewhere) who want to also use the foldable in this way?

I remember devices like that. Very cool in their day (still are?). I think there's at least some chance that the iPhone Fold will have an option for using it this way.

It's not an iPad Mini killer; it's an iPhone Pro Max + iPad Mini killer; especially if you usually upgrade the storage on both your phone and tablet.
It won't have good cameras, so it won't be a real Pro Max killer either.

@sleeptodream: By the way, here is a mockup that user iZac did a few weeks ago, side by side with a Pro Max and a mini. The red line is up to where I would roughly expect the keyboard to go.

Looks so odd for a device in 2025 🤔 Like a mini iPad that unfolds into a slightly larger iPad. Seems like it would be really hard to type one handed on the standard keyboard.

Personally I really like the tall narrow outer display on my Fold, super easy to swipe text with one hand, and fits in the hand so well, the way an old candybar Nokia used to

The other thing is, when opened and watching a video, the crease will be right down the middle of the screen vertically, which on my Fold I find to be much more distracting than when I turn it the other way and have the crease horizontal (maybe humans are just more used to seeing horizontal lines because of the horizon?). I like that the inner display is nearly square which gives me the option to rotate it that way, you wouldn’t have that option with this setup.

I highly doubt the crease will be completely invisible, like they’re trying to say

My iPhone keyboard is set to right side one-handed. I find this sort of necessary on all modern iPhones. (It can be quickly changed to left side or back to full by long pressing on the smiley face but I always leave it right)

It’s hard to imagine how Apple will pull it off but it seems like something they would obsess over. We’ll see.

I don’t trust apple to solve all possible problems that can happen in REAL LIFE usage.

They did not even realize that Titanium can only exchange 50% of internal heat with the outside than Aluminium - and started mass production of the iPhone 15 and 16 - followed by a desaster of overheating of their „top-class high-end“ titanium iPhones - and stepped back to Aluminium 2 years later without even regrets to their customers…

They will reduce weight by reducing battery size while the screen will consume double the energy.

I doubt that water resistance will be still exist after some years - same for mechanical reliability.

AND… you will have to fully open the screen to regard it.

Lots of reasons for someone who uses iPhones for 2-4 years should avoid bad and expensive experiences…

Apple used Titanium on the G4 Powerbook, and then Aluminum on the redesign so drastically changing materials is not uncommon for Apple.

Not sure what you mean by this, but you won't have to open the screen to have full iPhone functionality.

As for Titanium/Aluminium on the G4 powerbook:
Thanks for the Info.
Indeed very interesting, that apple made the same mistake even twice…
evidently they are often enough not able to learn lessons after the worst mistakes they did… they just tell their customers only „You are holding it wrong !“ or just ignore their customers problems… or both at the same times by blaming the customers.

As someone who made the experience with 2 MBP 15“ 2006 und 2008 (overheating because of bad design of the GPU which ended throwing them in the garbage, BEFORE they have been forced 6 years later by class action to repair it - without any regret to their customers… I had bad experiences enough with bad apple design…

I could go on with their epic failures … just to mention the catastrophic switch from the old MacPro to that product which did not only look like a garbage can, but was one instead… it took a lot of years and a lot of money of their customers for purchase and repair, until they came back to a solid design of the current MacPro..

As for the foldable iPhone:

ok, that means they have to design the foldable iPhone with 2-3 times the surface of the screen today: one foldable big one which means about 1,5-2 time the surface interior plus the „normal“ screen outside…

that means all the other problems in my last posting will be even more serious… especially about battery capacity and usability/reliability problems…

I am sure that this exotic iPhone will be by far too expensive and more prone to failure…

as for me,
I want a screen big enough to use the on-screen keyboard, big enough to read and see enough - and as well be sure that one single charge of my iPhone is enough for at least a whole day (24h-36h). And enough SSD capacity (512 GB or more). And not more of useless gimmicks..

As a lot of people like me do as well, I appreciate the iP14 PLUS, because it fulfills exactly my demands. Unfortunately apple seems to stop producing real-life adapted iPhones like the 14 Plus and 15 Plus… why does this not surprise me?

Others will stay in line during night in front of a apple shop to get this thing and be happy about their very expensive and perhaps *not too reliable* purchase - that’s ok.

I will surely not be one of them.

My girl has a 16 Plus but just like all iPhones its screen isn't tall enough when the keyboard is deployed in landscape. The iPhonebook will solve this with its much taller inside screen. But Apple will always make slab phones for people who prefer them.

Apple loves selling things to people but there weren't enough people who appreciated the Plus which is why Apple is discontinuing them. So dont be surprised at Apple, be surprised at consumer preferences.

You don’t know that, if it has cameras like the non pro models nobody is missing out. Not like pro cameras are anything incredible

Some people get the Pro Max for the screen, others get it for the cameras.
There is no one-fit-for-all device.
