Foldable 'iPhone Ultra' Could Be Missing These 5 Key Features Despite $2,000 Price Tag

It would be an entirely dumb decision to freeze out a the segment of consumers who are willing to part with £2000 for a premium iPhone from an entire ecosystem of accessories. All the MagSafe wallets, tripods , battery packs etc make money. This rumoured decision makes no sense.
 
I am hoping that this ends up being like the Air where people were saying it wasn't going to have magsafe right up until the announcement basically, but then it had it.

I would like for it to have magsafe, but faceID is starting to seem like something I could live without. I switched to a Razr ultra for now to try out a folding phone and so far I don't miss faceID at all. The fingerprint reader on this is just in the perfect spot so it is always easily accessible.

I was really trying to get past some of the previously rumored missing features. Touch ID in the power button has never been as reliable as Face ID. On the iPad Air Touch ID actually kind of sucks and is why I buy the iPad Pro. I use the telephoto lens on my iPhone 17 Pro Max almost every day. But now no MagSafe? That’s going to be a deal killer for me. I dock my phone on a MagSafe charging dock every night, rotate it into landscape mode, and then watch random things until I fall asleep. I do really want this foldable, but I’m not making this many sacrifices and paying the rumored over $2000 for it.

You can still use MagSafe with a MagSafe case. It just charges at 7.5W.

You can still use MagSafe with a MagSafe case. It just charges at 7.5W.

It's a completely different and superior form factor to a Pro Max. And yes, 7.8" is far bigger than 6.9".
 
MagSafe is the most annoying of these omissions for me personally, I have a lot of MagSafe battery packs and accessories it will be frustrating for those to not work with the new one. I have to imagine this is temporary- I have to think that if they continue this line gen 2 would have mags- so I think I'll definitely wait and see if this is true, maybe i'll hold off and check out gen 2 after the kinks are worked out.

Bike gloves aren't a problem for TouchID.

MagSafe will still work. It just charges at 7.5W.

So just to be clear, the rumor then is that the iPhone will have Qi charging, not Magsafe? Magsafe is Apple's standard for wireless charging, so I'd assumed no Magsafe = No wireless charging.

You're right though, I looked it up and saw this is what the 16e had. I just can't imagine Apple going backward like that.

The only rumor is that it won't have MagSafe. I can't even remember the last iPhone without Qi charging. I can assure you the Ultra will have Qi charging, at the very least.

I hope you're right! If the Air can pull off magsafe, surely the Ultra can too.
 
I think the most frustrating thing about this is, it feels like this ‘compromised’ version 1 of the iPhone ultra has to get enough suckers to buy it in order for the ‘good one’ to come out in a generation 2 or 3.

But if everyone thinks that then we never get a Gen 3 and this product line just dies in the vine. So then I have to just waste $1000 buying and using this one now in hopes that they get enough sales to make a Gen 2 and Gen 3 that I’ll fully enjoy.
 
Comparisons to the Air scream compromise to me. I think there’s been a few comments on needing the bigger external battery to get through a day…
This device I would assume would have two poor batteries to keep form factor. When one starts draining faster than the other, I’m curious what other constraints will be exposed.
 
Ain't no way MagSafe is not included. No action button too? Huh?

Sonny Dickson doesn't have the best track record for leaks so I'm taking this with a massive grain of salt.

Why does it need to be better than a Pro Max? the Pro Max will still be the flagship device that appeals to a wider market, Apple can't be lackimg with that device. The fold will likely be like the Air in that it offers something different. That doesn't mean it needs to best specs.

I think that really depends on its positioning. If it costs 2X as much, and is called the "Ultra", then I think it should probably have very few compromises over the other devices.

If it costs the same as the Pro Max, then I agree a different set of trade offs makes total sense!

(After all, the iPhone Air costs less than the iPhone Pro. It would have been odd if it cost far more.)

no case option? lol cases will be plenty out there and work great. poor battery? based on what? it could have 5800 battery.

seems like you are trying to put down a device with nothing to back it up with. apps will adjust like they do now and developers will have chance to update where they see fit.
