I think so too! The first thing I’ve done with every iPhone I’ve had since the 2G has been to pop it in a case before I even begin setup. I feel like I might make the jump to a naked phone for the first time in order to maximize the thinness of the Ultra… with AppleCare+ of course, as always.

definitely a chance I’ll chicken out and grab a case, but I hope I can make myself avoid it 🤞

I plan on checking out the Samsung Z Fold 8 just to get a general idea of the size, etc.

I’d like to check out the ZF8 for sure, but as a dedicated iPhone user since the 2G… where does one find Samsung devices for demo? Best Buy should have them, right?

Irrespective of the price and the features, it won't affect the purchase.

Telephoto lens - I don't even use it on my current phone.

FaceID - is a quality of life item, that said, I don't have FaceID on my MacBook and the TouchID works just fine. I will miss just looking at my phone to unlock it, but it's not a deal breaker.

MagSafe - this one is the lowest priority. While I have a MagSafe charger in the car, it's more for holding the phone than charging it. I'm too accustomed to rapid charging. I hate how warm the device gets when I use MagSafe charging with a portable MagSafe battery charger. Too much energy is dissipated as heat instead of charging the device. This tech needs to mature more IMHO.

Lets talk cases: this may be the first phone that I will use without a case. I miss the old days of the Element Case that were made of aerospace-grade aluminum. Sadly, they are no more.

I’ve been a long-standing Apple fan and user, but Chinese phones have crept into my life over the years. My 3-year old Oppo Find N3 foldable comes with a 3x (4-pixels binned into 1) and 6x lossless telephoto zoom at 64Mpx generating a 16Mb photo. I find it atrocious that Apple is subjecting iPhone Air users to only 1 camera (when it should really be 2), and iPhone Ultra/Fold to only have 2 (when the competitive baseline is to have 3).

As I hold onto my iPhone 17 Pro Max with its measly 4x telephoto on 48 Mpx sensor, and ponder on why my top smartphone can’t serve as my do-it-all travel photography camera as well compared to Xiaomi 17 Ultra, Oppo Find X9 Ultra or Vivo X300 Ultra, I will certainly not be buying the Fold, and am even doubting to upgrade my iPhone 17 Pro Max.

I’ll most likely spend my annual semiconductor budget on one of them amazing Chinese camera phones as my 2nd device, instead of a fold. My Oppo Find N3 can keep serving as the smaller tablet real estate for a few more years to go, until Apple decides to stop retaining specs-value from its users and start playing catch up.

The only reason I’m not ditching Apple entirely is because of its security and iCloud ecosystem. Beyond that, and once I figure out immich and beyond, my Apple purchasing will slow even more and more.

Not the way I’d like to see this amazing company go, in the face of intense Chinese competition…

I suggest Mark not start his discussions of the folding iPhone by proclaiming that those of us who are going to buy one are buying it because it's the ultimate status symbol. As I seethed through the rest of the discussion he did go on to talk about the usefulness of the various aspects of the fold, in particular the iPhone fold, ultimately telling us that he wants one (and certainly not leaving the impression that he wants one because it will be a status symbol for him).

Sales figures will tell. There does seem to be a lot of interest. Whether that is just hype or not remains to be seen.

It's Apple. They won't address the price, they'll just announce the price.

It doesn't matter what they say or don't s ay about screen durability, it'll be objective 3rd party testing after it is released that will give credible info on this.

The "compelling use case" is the interesting one, in terms of how they present it at the event. It's phone, it folds. They'll hopefully go a bit further than just this, and show how it will be uniquely useful. But it might feel likeable a rehash of the Fold 8 promotional material ( resizing apps for the larger inner screen, multiple apps in Split View, using outer screen as camera viewfinder etc )

You used a case on the 3GS? I didn’t use a case until the 6. I did use a bumper for the 4 though because I kept holding it wrong.

I actually used a flip and didn't get the iPhone till the 4! I was hold out because:
A: I didn't feel it was worth it at the time
B: I liked the flip with buttons, Motorola fan
C: iPhone was expensive
D: Thought the data plans were too slow
E: Was pissed Apple didn't have FaceTime and held out till the 4!
F: After all that, I was all in (even tho I was a hard-core fan boy even back then).

Those were some hard times btw waiting, but back then the Chinese had video phones!

The fat passport design is a huge plus. It makes the keyboard really nicely spaced out and comfortable. I owned several passport sized phones and theyve been a blast to type on also you can comfortably reach all sides of the phone.

Camera I personally dont care about at all. Lack of Face ID is a bit of a sting

No magsafe, no purchase. FaceID missing is already a big hit, touchID is much worse. Missing telephoto lens kills some of the interest for me, but I don't use my phone for any serious photography because it just can't handle it. I rather use my DSLR even though the 600mm telephoto is a beast to drag around.

Anyway, I'm not seriously even considering a phone that is supposed to be north of 2500e. No phone is worth that.

Imagine having an iPhone with magsafe and a car where you can charge just by laying the phone down.

Now imagine buying a folding iPhone that doesn't support magsafe and you have to go back to a wire for charging in the car. Also imagine paying +$2k for that phone.
