Foldable 'iPhone Ultra' Rumored to Come in These Two Colors

Not the single best. But people are getting a Pro Max over a Pro for that reason, and even just the relative size increase of video on the Ultra over the Pro Max is bigger than what you gain on the Pro Max over the Pro. It’s not something that can be dismissed as marginal.

I got a Pro Max because of Battery, the screen size didn't matter to me, I just wanted a device I can go a full day + without needing to even charge once.

Anyways clearly it's not for me, I predict this will not sell. If it's priced like their VR set it will be dead in the water.

I'd say versatility. Also, some people like bleeding edge tech because they like bleeding edge tech. It doesn't have to serve a function or purpose other than being "cool", while fitting their particular use case for it.

And it will sell like hotcakes, because the Galaxy Fold8 just had the biggest pre-order sales period of any Samsung launch ever; despite being twice the price of their standard phones. Especially now that you can just lease it.

Depends on your use obviously, but if you extensively use spreadsheets and web applications of various types, including relatively sophisticated ERP software, iOS can take you pretty far in a tablet form factor.

Sure, but why would you want to go there? I think one has to be a bit masochistic to use iOS for any kind of serious work. We use a few basic spreadsheets at work on an iPad and working with them drives me nuts. Selecting row/columns and cells is so much more fiddly. Copy and paste on iOS is not a great experience compared to the desktop. To each his/her own, though!

This. I always had a flagship phone, whether that was Apple or Samsung, but ever since my first foldable in 2022 I can't go back to a slab phone.

People get the iPhone Pro Max because it's the biggest display Apple offers. A foldable iPhone gives you an even larger screen in a smaller footprint. Seems pretty easy to understand the appeal.

It will cost as much as a loaded out MacBook Pro, and for what? So you can watch a video sorta bigger? If you've got iPhone ultra money then you've got iPad money and most assuredly have one, so again what does this phone do that I can't already?

I'll dump my ipad in a minute and just use this. The ipad was sold as a great tool and sadly the app store has killed it for anything but content watching and reading so might as well just have one device.

I think the point is that some of these use cases are untenable with a standard iPhone, but become within reach on a larger device such as a Z Fold. Hence why the iPhone Ultra will prove useful for bridging that gap, but not replacing laptops.

well, someting needs to happen for this user, I think... my black awu 2 is just to enormous and just in the way almost always and the lack of a "kid mode/kid lock" is really getting annoying. am I the first parent to use an apple watch? 😵

Probably because like others have mentioned it scratches easily and they obviously have the research to know which colors sold more. Honestly the question is no different than asking why doesn't Apple release the AirPods in black.

Re the AirPods I think it’s because they’re so iconic in white and tons of knockoffs / competitor brands use black. I think it has more to do with the earbuds staying white than the case color.

Your argument applies to other iPhones as well. A pro max costs up to $2000. Even the least expensive is $1200. You can buy all sorts of things with that money.

The thing about foldable is they look great at first, but eventually the crease develops, even visible when the screen is on.

I'm holding my one year old Z Fold 7 in front of me with my bright overhead desk light, brightness of the phone at 50%, and the crease is absolutely invisible.

The answer here is simple...when I'm not home (or even when I am at home and my iPad is not within reach), my iPad is completely useless if it's not in my hand. At any point in the day, home or not, I can reach in my pocket and pull out a phone that can be used as a phone, or unfold it and use it like an iPad. I really don't need an iPad anymore, and literally haven't used it since I bought my Z Fold 7 a year ago.

But I suppose if you think that a foldable is unnecessary because your tablet and phone combination can do the same thing, then keep on keepin' on.

Ditto. Even my M1 12.9" iPad Pro became less necessary after I got my first foldable. Sold the heavy iPad Pro soon after.

Well, that seems to pretty much confirm no telephoto. That’s really holding me back from purchasing, especially at that price, and especially for a first-gen product with moving parts that is bound to have more issues than all subsequent generations. It’s nice to bring that 8x telephoto to my kids’ games and not need to lug out my Sony a7R III with 100-400mm GM lens like some kind of pretentious ass.

I think at this stage of my life, being an active father doing things with my children out in nature and for sports, the iPhone Pro is the better, more durable option that can keep up reliably. Perhaps in a few more years, once they’ve shaken out the issues and made it more durable with a telephoto lens, I will try it out.

I get that, but I also question whether these "power user" use cases are even real. Is the iPhone Fold screen even going to be as large as an iPad Mini? And who in their right mind would want to do serious spreadsheet work (for example) on an iPad Mini? I consider myself a "power user". I taught myself to program on an Apple II as an 80s kid. I'd never torture myself doing any kind of serious work on an iPad, much less an iPhone Fold.

I carry an iPhone 17 Pro around, and most of the time I carry a Kindle Paperwhite too to read books on . I could definitely see an iPhone Fold a being useful for reading, browsing the web and showcasing photos in my portfolio.

A folding phone? I literally have a dead flip 4 in my drawer next to me; which was my wife's who now uses a flip 7. Longevity issues aside; she likes the form factor because it fits her bags & pockets (or lack of) better.

A folding iphone? it solves the problem of "i've been an iphone user for the last 15 years and for the past 8 years my phone has looked the same, year after year after year"

Because I get the benefit of a smaller phone and a larger one in a single device along with much better multitasking. I can't exactly fit an iPad in my pocket, can I? Not to mention a foldable iPhone will match/exceed an iPad Mini and still weigh a hell of a lot less.

Not everything is about watching a basic video on a larger screen; it's about running apps designed for an iPad or even the Mac on the go. Being able to do the equivalent of full video/photo editing like you can do now with the more professional apps on a Mac with a device that fits in your pocket is really nice. But now you can just quickly fold the screen and put it in your pocket and treat it like any other regular slab phone.

Ignoring the creases, it's the ability to have this in my pocket.

I guess I'm just old.. the thought of doing complicated timeline editing by hand on a touchscreen like that just sounds miserable in comparison to doing it on a Mac. To each their own though!
