Wait so it will have no selfie camera and no notch? Why can’t they do it on regular iPhones?

However there is still a possibility they will integrate camera in the center of a hinge🤣

Already poor specs compared to current foldable. Off course: apple is coming to the party 7 years later with a 1grn device lacking expertise in features and hardware.
And expensive as if truly “modern”, but it is truly behind in all specs already.
How is their foldable phone 7 years late to the party?

I think apple can afford to put both Face ID and touch ID on their devices. They each serve a good purpose and complement each other. In some environments one is more convenient than the other. If you look at the teardowns, the touch ID sensor is no bigger than the regular blank button and the cost for manufacture is in the pennies.

This way, Face ID can work great but in an environment where you’re wearing some types of sunglasses, have the device on a mount or table where the angle is bad or shaking like a bike or motorcycle, have the sun behind you, etc there any other issues you can simply touch the button that you were gonna press anyway to turn the device on and you’re instantly in iOS, there’s literally no downside and only makes every one happy in all situations. it also gives you two good methods of bio authentication for important things like banking, etc..

Regardless of user opinion in the Apple hierarchy Face ID is the premium biometric while Touch ID is second tier; iPad Pro vs iPad Air, iPhone vs iPhone SE, etc

Apple's flagship computer (the MacBook Pro) uses Touch ID.

This is how bored people are. They wish for something worse than the complete effortless Face ID just because it’s different. Dopamine addiction is a real problem.

I have a hard time believing this because it seems like a step down for something that will have a premium price tag.
You’re right, it’s a huge downgrade. But I believe it. Tim Cook’s Apple has become adept at making products obsolete before they’re even released. Imagine how much the foldable 2 will drive upgrades when it has Face ID?

New rumor dismisses old rumor on macrumors is something beautiful
That's the best kind. At least it's not the same regurgitated stuff which could go back to the same source. Plans change, news better change along with it.

But it does from a customer's standpoint:)
Honestly, I have zero interest in thinking about whether I’m opening my phone from the left or the right just to make sure Face ID is facing me — because obviously the sensor won’t be placed on the crease.
From a customer standpoint, that’s even dumber.

Haven't these experts and insiders played out their role? They are contradicting each other and come with right fact quite rarely.

Under the screen seems like too much hassle. They should just put it on the side like many of the iPads. Problem solved.

A precise under-display fingerprint reader is very difficult to implement, especially in a thin device. However, I can throw in a different rumor here if anyone’s interested. According to a source who has seen a prototype visual design unit, the rear camera bump on the iPhone Fold is almost invisible. The small bump is shaped similarly to the one on the iPhone Air and barely sticks out.

because this is their flagship...so you place a cheaper and less intuitive solution ? because you pay twice the price...so we should have 2x faceID for intuitively usage
Its just milking the customers because they will brag about faceID into their second or third generation...
The outer screen is already going to have limited vertical real estate, squeezing in faceID/dynamic island would reduce it even further. Many people would complain, I’m sure.

Same with putting faceID inside, many would complain about the large cutout interrupting the screen. A camera alone can be somewhat hidden, but an area large enough for faceID would be easily noticeable. In Samsung’s latest Fold 7 they stopped using an under display camera all together

I loved Touch ID in the home button, was a very elegant and seamless experience. I’ve never had one of the power button Touch ID devices but seems far less natural

At this price point, I definitely don’t want to be choosing which camera I’m supposed to authenticate with.
Why would you have to choose? Surely Apple would implement some logic here. If the phone is folded, use the front one. If it's open, use the inside one. Very unlikely you're going to be looking at the front/back of the foldable when it's open; and obviously the inside camera can't see you when it's folded. This is how it works with the Samsung Fold.

The threads about this just go to show how different people are and how differently they experience things, because I could never go back to Touch ID; there’s stuff I think I’d be fine with giving up but Touch ID would be a deal breaker. Every time I use Touch ID now on my MacBook or iPad I think “man I wish this thing had Face ID.”
Completely agree about differences in opinion. Personally, I don’t want my Mac to unlock by looking at it without taking some action, like tapping a key, first. With Touch ID, I can do both at once, though admittedly this won’t work with other keyboards.

Would have liked to have FaceID. TouchID will be on the power button. Will be nice if it has telephoto lens. Don't think Apple will go for an under screen TouchID even for future versions of the foldable.

I can’t help thinking… when you actually use it, will this feel more like a iPhone or a foldable iPad Mini? The speed and ease of a use of regular iPhone will be better for most things. FaceID is a very good and fast authentication system. No opening of the main screen necessary. If I have to go back to TouchID on the iFold it will reintroduce a tiny bit of friction that (however well implemented) will make using the iFold for most things (marginally) slower. The front screen is also smaller. Will opening it be worth it for the extra screen space for most things I use the iPhone for? Or will it be better at things I don’t know yet?

I’ve seen many long term reviewers commenting they open their Android foldable in maybe 10% of the time. It is why all Android foldable are back to the regular phone slab size for the front screen; most users do most things on the front screen anyway. Apple’s first offering looks like a mini mini iPad (or so the rumour mill says).

I’m truly curious :)

Since you can unlock with Apple Watch it doesn't really matter. FaceID is more convenient sometimes but TouchID is also more convenient at other times like when you don't want to turn your head to unlock your phone. Wouldn't want under screen Touch ID in case my fingers are dirty it would smudge up the screen.

I'd probably also use it folded most of the time. I use my iPhone a lot more than my iPad, but that doesn't mean I don't like using the iPad. I'd expect usage for me to be around 80/20.

I don't see why I would unfold it when I'm just checking off a shopping list in a supermarket or paying with Apple Pay, quickly taking a photo, replying to a message, phone call etc.

But for surfing the web, watching videos, gaming and some productivity tasks using it unfolded should be great.

For me the purchase decision comes down to how compromised the folded experience is compared to a regular iPhone and how compromised the unfolded iPad mini experience is compared to a regular iPad (mini).

If the benefits of not having to carry/charge/having to have a SIM card in two devices outweigh the downsides/compromises I'll definitely get one.

Agreed. It's the folded use that has me wondering how much 'worse' it will be: smaller screen, TouchID. To be discovered 😊
