Personally, I don't see the attraction of a foldable phone.

I'd rather see Apple innovate on iPhones with dual LCDs -- a full screen on the front, and another full screen on the back. You could actually do away with the notch completely with such a phone -- at least on one side -- and would eliminate the need to even have a selfie camera. You simply move all the cameras and sensors to one side.

I love the idea to have an a bit screen on the front and a lesser one on the back so there's space for the camera, flash, phone speaker, etc. Being able to unfold them for dual-screen use would be great, but I don't trust apple with hinges anymore. On the Macbook pro they're using a ribbon cable that rubs against a sharp edge every time you unfold... that's just wrong.

I am fully aware it was an announcement. Several of your posts have inferred it has been released :)

What do you mean by "Really"?

I meant really it's pretty obvious Samsung will release it before Apple and doing a google search would have told you it's going to be released in April. Either way it will beat Apple to market. It sounded like you were implying Samsung wouldn't beat Apple to market.

This is what I think will happen also, although I think there is a ton to work out to hit that 2020 date. I don't think bigger and bigger screens are really the answer, quite the opposite actually.

Yes. Apple is shifting the focus to devices with smaller screens or none at all. See Apple Watch, AirPods and HomePod.

Apple has started out on a trajectory of undoing the damaging part of what they created with the iPhone: spending too much time lost in our devices. You can see it in statements they've made in interviews: both Jony Ive and Tim Cook have said they regret how disconnected people have become from the world around them. You can also see it in the products and features they've emphasized like Screen Time and the focus of Apple Watch on getting active. A foldable iPhone with an even larger screen that you can carry in your pocket is an antithesis to that goal.

Instead, our computers are going to increasingly become omnipresent, humanlike assistants we interact with like we do with other humans, through conversation, allowing us to remain present with the world around us. Screens on our wrists, and optionally overlaid on to the real world through AR Glasses, are the future of the personal computers we carry with us.

I don't think large screens are going to go away for times when we do want to watch visual content but they won't be our main devices. Perhaps a rollable display that fits in a pen could be an accessory to the Apple Watch. More likely though, and given Apple's push to having AirPlay everywhere, they'll rely on being able to AirPlay to any screen. With every major TV going forward having AirPlay, the odds will be pretty high that there'll always be an AirPlay compatible screen nearby.

Good to see Apple looking for solutions to issues with foldable screens prior to releasing. Samsung and Huawei should have done the same.

What makes you think Samsung with it's years of research didn't think of this????

Seems like Apple is trying to make sure their fanbase knows they are at least bringing up concepts since foldable phones are our future...keeps you guys waiting for theirs even if will be in 2021 or 2022.

Glad Samsung secured the name Galaxy Fold just like they did with the Galaxy Note...Samsung will be known for it's foldables and being the pioneer just like with Phablets .....

Apple does not give a **** about being first, and make no mistake, they are experimenting with this sort of stuff on their secret labs.
Apple will only jump on this bandwagon if it sees there is a demand. Just look how long it took Apple to increase the display size on their iPhones or have an OLED display.
Apple will wait patiently, learn from others mistake, work to improve and then strike.

1. Let other companies test whether there is market demand
2. ????
3. PROFITS!!!

While I appreciate the novelty of a folding screen, I'm still having doubts that there is that much demand for a product like this.

Just like people who were content with physical keys on their phone or content with a watch that just tells time or content with the headphone jack or...

It's not about what you think people want, it's about making something that you can't imagine living without.

Hahaha, comments on the stories of the other folding phones on here claiming Apple will never make a foldable phone, please Apple don’t make a foldable phone.

Well they will be making foldable phones, at some point. IMO not for a few years though. But who knows?

No, I was responding to someone inferring it had already been released :)

This is the kind of attention to detail that I doubt you will find in the Galaxy Fold. But yet, people will still say Apple doesn't do enough.
Lord have mercy. Keep the same anti-fold screen energy you guys had when you saw Samsung and Huawei present there's. Samsung already innovated and Apple just added sprinkles and you play it off like it's amazing tech. Lol

And you keep dreaming that the Fold is anything more than an expertise gimmick. Everyone knows its not finished. Maybe next year. But sure, call slapping two phones together Innovation.

Has apple ever told you that they would release cheap devices? But look iPads start $330 & iPhones start at $450 in US & $350 in Asia. I hope they do the same for Macs by bringing them inhouse.

I didn’t say anything about their prices. However they have told me things were stunning when they weren’t, and innovative when they years late and just a copy of the competition.

Am I the only person wondering why we need foldable iPhones?

I think its cool tech, but I can't say I want to buy one right now. I barely use the tablet I have. I am mostly iPhone and Laptop. So foldable doesn't replace my laptop much like tablets never did. So I don't know that I make the same mistake I did in buying a tablet only this time in the foldable form.

They may have, but they decided to move forward with obvious compromises like a creased screen. My point was that I’m glad Apple isn’t rushing into this and waiting for the tech to mature. I also don’t think that foldables are the future so I’ll live if they never come out with such a product.

I’m not sure what your point is then. It comes out in a little over a month. You expect the issues with creased screens, which they have been working on since 2013, to be fixed by April? For the sake of their customers, I hope you’re right.

I expect that people who loves using ''wallet like'' cases on their phones will continue to use these cases even if the phone is foldable.
So they get like and extra fold to unfold, first you unfold, then you unfold again :p

By attention to detail, are you referring to how Apple decided to keep the obnoxious volume popup that takes up almost half of the screen for the past 5+ years?

My brick iPhone has a built in heater. It's called a battery. When I use it more, the phone gets warmer. When it sits in sunlight, it shuts off because its too hot. Why the hell do I need it to fold? And why does it need more heat?

Trying hard not to sound like an apple apologist here, but honestly does anyone care about you and your brick iPhone? Why are you wasting your time telling us about it?

My iPhone does not have those problems. Maybe you should consider getting a battery replacement if it is such an issue for you.

Ohhh SNAP! Oh yeah I bet G5isAlive did not think of that. You totally got him big time there. BURN! Like come on the volume pop up was such a totally omg huge issue. Like jesus everyone knew that, iPhone sales were clearly plummeting because of it, like biggest issue of the 2010's. CLEARLY Apple cannot get anything right.

Yeah, but why not just make it functional, streamlined and in flow?
You said it yourself, it's not like it's and huge issue, but OS flow is always in the details.
