Interesting! With the outer screen getting smaller by a greater amount/percentage than then inner screen, this device will be getting shorter than I previously assumed.

My quick napkin sketch suggests this might be about ~115mm tall ... the same height as an iPhone 4.

Just a lot wider, ~85mm or so.

Can I get just half?

5.3" displays sounds perfect!

That's all I need.
no you don't , lmao

don't forget the aspect ratio, this is what it'll look like. handy, innit ?

Interesting point… I honestly think the iPhone Mini was too big, would have happily had something like an all-screen 4…

It’s going to be impossible to evaluate this thing until one gets to hold it in their hands. I think a lot of haters will love it, and people who eagerly anticipate it may change their minds.

However, specs might not be finalized yet.

If the product is coming out in 2027, the specs are absolutely finalized by now.

For smartphones, specs are generally locked in 12-18 months before launch.

For a new device such as this, the specs are frozen even further in advance.

Saying "specs might not be finalized yet 9 months before the supposed launch" is just a lazy attempt to cover your @$$ in case the rumor is wrong.

5.3 display? Now that sounds interesting! Iphone mini & ipad mini in all-in-one device? Would love to try that, but not at the price point apple will offer it.. :)

I think it’s inevitable. All the big players have foldables, and I remember when the Galaxy Fold first came out people said it’ll be a fad and won’t last, yet they keep making them and they’re slowly becoming more popular.

There’s a good amount of people who want this, even if small, but it’ll keep growing as the tech advances, and Apple will probably perfect it sooner rather than later.

As for the buttons, they can still move towards that for all their other devices and still have a foldable that’ll (hopefully) get stronger and sturdier each iteration.
Slight correction: all the big players have foldables that haven't sold very well.

I don't mean to poo-poo the idea: who wouldn't want to have twice the screen size of their current smartphone? But besides longevity considerations for that fold, one has to consider the reality of heft. I am a long-time customer of iPhone Pro Max. But even I had enough of the increasing weight and thickness and got the Air at the last go around. Sure, I regret the loss of the additional lenses and the better speakers, but boy do I enjoy having a thin and light phone again! I am hoping that the next Air will maintain its thinness and start to add back in the electronics that were jettisoned in the name of thin/light as electronics/battery-efficiency continue to shrink/improve.

I just listed the two items - camera and speakers - that had to be left behind in order to get the iPhone Air to be as thin as it is. A foldable, whose two parts would have to be even thinner, would probably have to make similar sacrifices. The thinnest foldables out there have a thickness of 4-5mm per part (so total thickness of 8-10mm) counted at the thinnest area (i.e. not where the camera bump is). And they weigh a lot more than the current behemoth that is the iPhone 17 Pro Max. How heavy/fat a phone are you willing to carry around 100% of the time for the few times that you need that large screen?

I (probably the only one) have had every iteration of the Samsung Fold. The 5.3 outer display is absolutely too small. Some may like the smaller form factor of the outer display, but that was the achillies heel of all the previous Fold versions before the newest Fold 7. People with average hands were having a hard time typing, multi tasking, etc. Why not just match or exceed what the newest Fold 7 already has that is a proven design? Improve the hinge and crease that everyone on MacRumors complains about and us iOS and it would be a home run! I'll pass until I get my hands on one to use physically.

Disappointing to have a small outer screen. Have been waiting for a long time for it. On top of this downside, the rumors mention lack of FaceID and telephoto lens, both of which I require. And after all these downgrades, one will still end in spending much more than the Pro Max. Does not look like I can use it as my primary iPhone. Happy with my Orange 17 Pro Max and 11" iPad Pro. The Z Fold 7 dimensions are ok for me. Unfortunately it is not running iOS.

Has someone who has tried multiple Samsung Folds, If I can offer some advice, don't go in on the fold until it has an outer screen that is a size you can live with. The Z Fold 7 is the first Samsung fold where I am happy with the outer screen.

iPhone mini crew rides again, but this time with a foldout iPad mini built in.

I find TouchID and FaceID to both have plenty of failures.

My ideal device would leverage them both, as they each have contexts where they are the preferred choice.

I like Touch ID, but no telephoto would make it a non-starter for me too. I mentioned I kinda like the idea of a flip phone more than the fold type, but I worry that such a flip phone wouldn't have a telephoto either.

The technical issue (physics) is that you need a reasonable thickness to fit a decent telephoto camera ... the thickness of the iPhone 17 Pro is just over 13mm including the camera bump.
