Phones Folding phones the next frontier

Just wanted to pop in to say how nice it is to AirDrop between Android & Apple Devices… transferring files with my Mac, iPad and Galaxy Fold has been a breeze (no longer need LocalSend). And with Microsoft in discussion with Apple to bring Universal Clipboard history to Windows… good time to be on the Android side of things.

Here’s the TwelveSouth HoverBar Stand… compared to my previous Fold 6, it was much easier to place it into the clamps. But still works with it.

The volume keys seems a bit off… same with the fingerprint scanner, feel like it should be slightly lower. But other than that… I’m okay with it.

And I find myself using the outer display more compared to previous foldables… maybe it’s the nostalgia factor of it all bringing me back to the days where phones had a smaller footprint. I don’t keep it opened as much as I used to, think I went a day (nearly two) with it folded.

Placement of the speakers doesn’t really bother me, played a few videos and it seemed fine (mostly use earbuds). And of course, adding S-Pen support would have made the experience waaaaay interesting!

Edit. Oh yeah, hole punch camera placement on the inner display is awful!

People are more likely to be interested in the iPhone Fold after seeing Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide because Apple’s entry promises to refine the foldable concept with its design ecosystem, competitive pricing, and software integration

—while Samsung has already proven that wider foldables can be practical and popular. Apple’s reputation for polish and reliability makes consumers curious to see how it will address the weaknesses of Samsung’s foldables

What are some of the perceived weaknesses of Samsung foldables beyond different OS preference?

Samsung did a lot of the legwork for Apple, continually refining foldables and making them lighter, thinner, more durable, and with a more usable cover screen. The last significant barrier is still price, and I don't see Apple undercutting Samsung there.

Samsung set the bar pretty high with the Fold 8 and OneUI. Apple better not screw up the software side of the equation with the foldable iPhone and I'm curious if Gen 1 will support Apple Pencil.

I'm interested in how Apple does it also. Particularly the software aspect and how they choose to handle multitasking and app optimization.

I'm interested in how Apple handles the software side of it with multitasking and stuff. They should be able to optimize apps better but not sure they can do better than Samsung for multitasking.

I think your getting a bit confused between what tech enthusiasts may do especially if they favor Apple over normal consumers, of Apple products

Not sure where the promise is from Apple or the addressable weaknesses they may tackle 🙂

I don’t think there was any strong arguments coming your way… more of an open discussion because there’s a lot of hype surrounding Apple foldables. It’s been rumored for years… so, naturally it sparks conversation.

Don't forget many of us here are dual OS users

I have already traded my MBP16 M2 and MBP14 M3 in, plus my IP16 Pro eventually.

So hopefully only a few hundred to pay and get the IFold

Yes, I suspect a lot of people that throw shade at foldables will suddenly have a change of heart.

I'm interested in how it works. I haven't used an iPhone since the 14 so whenever I use my wife's phone it's just awkward to me. But I could be convinced to switch but probably not.

I’m thinking of getting rid of my 15 pro max and Apple Watch 10 for the fold 8.
My carrier is offering 562 on o2 recycle for the phone.
The only thing that’s putting me off is the hassle of swapping everything around. I like the idea of the iPhone fold/duo but it’ll prob be out my price range. Obv the camera will be a miss but can cope with that.

That seems reasonable for O2 trade in and best of all you can get your F8 tomorrow as they have stock 🙂

Amazon will deliver official samsung case same day too
