Phones Folding phones the next frontier

I come in peace, trust me, I love you Samsung/Pixel users and rock what you love - But I really feel like Apple ate their lunch with some of these ideas on their first gen.

The nano-texture display to not only limit crease visibility but also hide fingerprints on a screen that won't be a quick wipe on your shirt to clean. The sidebar on the right side of the inner and outer display to make better use of the vertical space and put any touch-points within reach (I wonder if there will be left side option for left-handed folks?). The under-display camera on the inner display which was completely unexpected by me. The animation that takes you from outer-to-inner display almost seamlessly. IP68 (Credit to Google as well).

All of this of course needs to be test driven in the real world but just purely on an idea level, this blew me away more than I expected. This was feeling like a product that would be un-Apple potentially but they totally put their spin on it.

Apologies for the Apple glazing in this section of the forum, but this also feels like the general folding phones discussion thread so.

We welcome it, I'm interested in seeing the inner screen since it looks similar to the matte one I'm using on the Fold 8 but improved so let's see, I like the flex mode on the Duo which is only available on Fold Ultra, love the animations from close to open and back. Excellent IP like Google Pixel Fold and magsafe.

After watching a couple of hands-on videos the Duo's inner display is very anti-reflective and looks like a nice matte screen. I love it. The sidebar, however, Samsung / Good Lock Edge panel looks superior for now. Unless I'm missing something, the transition from outer to inner display is just as good on the Fold 8 especially if you customize using Good Lock? I may be wrong. The biggest selling point to me is the UDC on the Duo. I can't wait to get it, looks like an awesome device.

Same here, day 1 preorder. Go figure I'll be out of town for a couple weeks at the end of October but luckily not leaving until the 17th so I can (hopefully) get my preorder in.

Same here, day 1 preorder. Go figure I'll be out of town for a couple weeks at the end of October but luckily not leaving until the 17th so I can (hopefully) get my preorder in.

I can't wait to put the screen next to my Fold 8 since my screen has that matte look and is anti reflective in my eyes.

If it's like the nano-tech screen on the high end iPad Pros then it will be really nice.

Edge Panel is certainly superior to the sidebar that the iPhone Duo has… and let’s not get it twisted, Samsung has plenty features under the hood with Good Lock.

Think Apple philosophy is much different than Google/Android… you get a much more tablet experience when unfolding versus Apple completely optimizing iOS for a bigger display. And I can see the criticism coming from a mile away “why Apple only allowing 2 apps side-by-side” “where are the tablet apps?”

Yeah I agree I still love my edge panel and I actually like my screens to be different between the folded state and unfolded, but I'm very happy with what Apple put out

If I’m not mistaken… they changed the format, and following Samsung TriFold design on Huawei 2nd generation . But as you suggested.. support is the question, because how will repairs take place.

Oh, I must've watched the wrong XT video. I see what you mean now. Between the XT 2 and TriFold, I'd still go with the latter.

Yep I am a bit concerned with this even if you have 2 Apple phones your dependent on carriers adopting this and no doubt it wont be free especially in far east let alone US or Europe

I assume its an Apple specific feature and not universal or cross platform
 
So what does Samsung know after 7 years of the fold that Apple did not ?

Samsung dropped the UDC and SPen but Apple Duo has it

Was it just Samsung cost cutting or price fixing or weight saving or thickness or feedback as there was a lot of criticism on the UDC quality and no silo for the SPen ?

Samsung is making the OLED panels for Apple so they were well aware of the UDC/Pen on the Duo

There may be a good reason why the Duo is so heavy/thick in comparison

We'll see, but conversely, Apple knew that Samsung dropped UDC and sPen from the Fold and went ahead with both for the iPhone Duo.

They were sued and had to remove the UDC if I am not mistaken. It has been settled since but devices are finalized and parts secured well in advance.

For the last 2 years there was a run among Android vendors to get the thinnest and lightest foldable. I guess they dropped features in its favor and as a nice side effect it also saved them money

I wonder how Samsung plans to spin it when they bring back stylus support. If only they just put the technology into the pen… no digitizer, even though the pen will be on the thick side (like the  Pencil).

Well, I'm getting the iPhone Duo. Also, I'm keeping my S25 Ultra because it is a great phone and has the S pen. Next year, we'll see what Samsung does?

Android is ahead in being resolution independent with apps and ability to swing between normal phones, tablets, and desktop modes.

While new iPads are decent at doing this, many applications just don’t scale correctly, where Android has been doing this brilliantly for quite a few years now, making for a less janky UI / UX experience.

I wish Apple luck, but as a non-adopter of foldable devices, I still see them as being a bit far behind.
