Wow!! What happens now?

Do the Russians kill everyone?
Are Gordo and Tracy left alive because they are hiding?
Did the cosmonaut really defect? Or was that said as a coded message which would get back to the Russian base?
What happens with the USA/Soviet docking now?
Does Pathfinder arrive and find everyone dead?
Are all the comms gone?

good episode, what an ending!

When I saw the Astronauts doing "routine" maintenance checks, then one looked out...
I knew immediately something would happen.
However I thought it would end with the Astronaut getting sucked out to the moon surface through the shot window...

then hands, boots in the window...
here I go, thinking one Cosmonaut going for revenge...

then wait, WTF more hands, boots, more weapons and Cosmonauts...
Holly S*ht!

Just cool

Pathfinder launching from a plane, "just flying off into space".
Star Trek quote/talk from Danielle during the Apollo launch.

Worried
Looks like pretty much all of the main cast are on the chopping board of sorts potentially:
  • Ed on armed Pathfinder
  • Danielle on the Apollo/Soyuz
  • Molly is already radiation damaged.
  • Gordo and Tracy in conquered Jamestown Base.
  • Ellen potentially under political pressure/public eye stepping down or forced to do so (due to the sleazy politician maybe uncovering her, her husbands and Pams secret)

Glad
Molly changed her mind and returned to Wayne.
Aleida was back in mission control, along and next to Bill.

Sad
for Margo and Sergej and scientific collaboration and potential international and personal relations
for Ellen and Pam's relationship. Clearly that letter was a lie and Ellens husband knows. Makes it even worse.

Angry
at Karen... (not for what she did at the bar, but dropping and taking it out on Ed now)

I was hoping that plotline would end, but I guess not...

Maybe the Russians wanted him back thinking that the Americans were holding him hostage for information? Regardless, that guy is screwed if he's returned to the hands of Russians...

Sally Ride’s turnaround was strange. From “how dare we carry weapons” to a “lock and load” attitude.

It was great seeing the Saturn IB lift off from the milkstool.

And Karen has crossed over from being annoying to clearly becoming unstable.

Really getting interesting now, wasn't prepared for that ending last night.
Agreed, quite the ending! The whole episode really, I felt was the first one that's really brought this "what if" story now into the realm of "alternate reality", as the stakes ever-increase and we get further along in time since the alternate starting point in history of the moon landing. Quite excited to see how they end the season.

Excellent, starting to have some great cliffhangers.

I keep hoping Kelly will ship off to the academy soon as her character adds nothing.
I agree, the Kelly storyline is just not that interesting yet, especially compared to everything else that's happening now. I said this earlier when the show was just starting to go into her storyline, and it just feels odd to bring in at this point. There are enough other characters that we've been investing in since beginning of first season that I'd rather further explore - Kelly is a new character, and while she's interesting in how she applies to Ed/Karen's relationship, her on her own is less so. That being said, I'm willing to give it a try and see where it goes - it's not like other shows haven't brought in characters in subsequent seasons, that end up becoming more important characters. So willing to see if it gets more interesting.

On Margo / Sergej, it'll be interesting to see if and how this develops. I mean they launched the Apollo-Soyuz, basically while all this craziness is happening on the moon and Pathfinder's escort, etc. Will be an interesting storyline to follow especially given their feelings and developing relationship with the backdrop of escalating conflict between their countries / governments.

On Ellen / Pam - definitely a love-filled move by Pam to get out of Ellen's way. It's a well-used movie / drama trope, but powerful nonetheless. I hear you that Larry (Ellen's husband) likely knows (or will quickly realize it when he remembers what he told Pam re: potential presidency candidate), and you can sorta see this coming that he may eventually tell Ellen...

On Karen, this continues to be a weird storyline. I really wish they hadn't gone there with her and Danny. It would've been fine if after the kiss on the dance floor, it ends as a mistake, and he ships off back to the Marines the next week. Just somewhat of an uncomfortable place it goes with him being her son's best friend... that being said, compared to that, her telling Ed on the eve of his launch I fault her less about. He was insistent she tell him, and wasn't letting her keep it to discussing when he got back. You could argue she shouldn't have even hinted at it, but in that kind of emotional state, I mean it's a bit more understandable than her sleeping with Danny in the first place.

All in all though, felt it was a great episode and has upped my excitement level for week's season finale!

While Karen's plot line is cliched, it serves two purposes:
  1. Reactivate Ed's rage, dormant since Shane's death. His rage will no doubt affect his initial responses to the Russians.
  2. Ed backing out from cheating. Possibly foreshadowing that Ed will come to his senses and try to back off eventually.
IMO Shantel VanSanten is quite possibly the best actress on the show and Karen's character arc until the incident has been very relatable. Surrounded by overachievers, constantly put into stressful situations while putting on the brave face, dealing with Shane's death, and her adopted daughter Kelly choosing a risky life choice. Owning and operating the bar hasn't been the healthy distraction she had hoped.

Adding them all up, I can at least understand her action. But the incident is still quite disappointing to say the least and maddening at its worst.

When Karen is lying on the backyard, staring into the sky where Ed might be, she is completely lost. I think she wants to feel guilty, but she is too angry at all the challenges she had to deal with and emptiness of her life.

I thought much of the season meandered along without enough focus but the last few episodes were brilliant.
I have to say the girl power element was a little strong but I don’t mind when it’s a new IP and not just shoe horned in to something existing.

Totally agree with you.

Ron D. Moore Interview BIG WARNING, potential spoilers for the season 2 finale and beyond!

There is a plan. There was generally a seven-year arc of structure that we pitched originally. Each season would go roughly 10 years into the future. So, you catch up to the modern-day and go a little bit into the future. That said, these things are changeable and organic. We approach each season fresh, even though we have a big framework of what the next season’s supposed to be. We always start at the beginning and say, okay this is what we talked about two years ago, let’s make sure this still holds up. Is this still where we want to go?

Ron D. Moore deserves a lot more mainstream attention than he gets. The man was one of few essential in not just revamping sci-fi on TV, but proving that character-driven, long arching serialized plots did work on episodic TV. If it wasn't for Star Trek: DS9 and Battlestar, we'd never have many of the quality TV hits we've had in the past 10 - 15 years.

I thoroughly enjoyed the second half of season 1 and all of season 2 except this last episode. It was just ridiculous. I don’t think it ruined the season for me, but it tried hard. I still look forward to 3 though.
