More high budget mediocrity.

Couldn't agree more. Apple shows have been totally underwhelming. Their shows are predictable, plodding, and cliche. They seem to have promise, but something just makes them so shallow and uninteresting. Even the "acclaimed" Morning Show can't help but jump straight into stereotypes and predictable modern cliches. Oh brother.

Just for perspective, what are some shows that you found deep and interesting?

One of the things that I like about "For All Mankind" are the subtle details that become hugely relevant later on, like Ted Kennedy not going to Chappaquiddick. There are many things that only stand out either if you were paying close attention or upon a rewatch.

Questions, questions:
Will Reagan be a hero or a bad guy? Will the soviets collapse or grow?
will the USA or the soviets become a colonising empire, doing evil and suppressing the lunarians?
or will TANSTAAFL instead of the Nanny State become a thing?

will nasa be renamed the space force or space navy? It already looks like they will have space marines.

maybe season three will be a TV series version of Stark’s War (Jack Campbell) or the Aristillus series (Travis JI Corcoran). Either would be awesome btw, but more up Amazon’s alley TBH.

I think it will be hard for Apple to produce a truly groundbreaking show. They are clearly prioritizing big-budget productions with A-list stars. Anyone who has worked in Hollywood or knows people who do, knows how it goes. Too many cooks (no pun intended) in the kitchen. Most major Hollywood fare aims squarely for the middle, playing on basic emotions, never being too nuanced or challenging. Stars have their "brands" to protect. So does Apple. Everyone's requirements must be met. Fresh content, much less great art, rarely emerges under those conditions...but big financial returns often do.

I'm not really sure what Apple is doing with Apple TV+ and I'm not sure they know yet either. I find it strange that they offer it on non-Apple devices. I would have thought keeping it Apple-only made more sense. After all, most of Apple's sales are hardware-related. Only being able to watch the latest Tom Hanks or Will Smith blockbuster on an Apple device would sell some hardware. And the subscription cost is way too cheap unless they just plan to subsidize it indefinitely, which, along with the Hollywood A-list emphasis, makes it feel more like a vanity project than anything else.

I find it very interesting that Apple never launched a record label despite their astronomical success in music. Jobs knew better. Content is a tricky business on many levels.

I couldn't get through the first couple of episodes of season 1. I heard it gets better later in the series, but it just couldn't hold my interest long enough.

So far I've found Apple TV+'s repertoire of content pretty underwhelming in general. The only reason I still have a subscription is because I got one free with a hardware purchase.
This series is a masterpiece

OMG. MY HYPE meter is OFF THE FRIGGIN CHARTS!! This was my favorite November launch title, and I CANNOT wait for the second season. I only wish they had included a release date, I hope coronavirus doesn't push off the season's start too long.

I am surprised there is even more content. Did they film it back to back with season 1 by just splitting it into „two parts“?
They wrote in a news piece that they finished filming the first half of shooting - that tells me there's a good chance they split the season up in two parts. It looks like they got all the post-production work done on the segments they already filmed, based on this trailer.

Reagan will be a good guy, as he was in our timeline. A nice chunk of the audience of this show would be disappointed otherwise.

Looks good, I enjoyed the first season.

Does anyone know, if you are on the Apple upgrade program and I got a free year of ATV+ last year, will I get another on this fall with the new phone?

Yay. More patriotic crap!
I hope you didn’t watch the first season because you missed the part where patriotism was supplanted by progressivism and then the two merged. I’m not complaining because I enjoyed the first season a lot but just because you see Russians, Americans and their respective flags in an American production does not equate to mindless U.S. patriotism. Look deeper.

Aren't they both commentary on international relations in the context of space exploration?
Yes but one of them could have had a laugh track.

You just described what Disney is doing and HBO already started doing long ago. Apple is aiming for quality over quantity. You can reduce that to big stars and budgets aiming for lowest common denominator if you want to but you would be wrong if you think that’s the goal. Apple is looking to brand themselves as a curator for reliable and predictable high production value. That is not the same as predictable stories and characters. With Netflix, Hulu and Amazon, you have many hits and many misses. Apple wants viewers to come to Apple TV+ with high expectations of quality programming. It might not be as challenging or controversial as other smaller shows but to me, every Apple show feels like a polished work made with care even if I didn’t personally like every show. In other words, Apple TV+ is like shopping in the Apple Store while Netflix is like shopping in a flea market. Both have value but only Apple Store delivers consistent quality and experience throughout.

Sure, but at $5 a month I might like something new I would want to eat at least five or six times a month.

I Said
Space Force is to For all Mankind as Orville is to Star Trek.

which resulted in:

No, The Orville is actually good.

A loving satire that’s also a better drama than any recent attempts made by the satiree?
The Orville is actually really good, even though it was supposed to be a short lived spoof.

Hmm, people seem to fail to grasp the concept of an analogy. The statement is no reflection of value, rather similar genre equivalence though.

For the record, Orville>>Space Force, and until Discovery the last good ST series was ST:Enterprise.

Space Force reminds me of the 60's Batman - campy and overacted, but while Batman was good Space Force gets old after a while.

One interesting thing about Space Force is apparently FLOTUS almost played a role in uniform life, sometimes real life does mirror art.

I liked the first season, it’s finally based in a time when we could see some Apple product placements. A few Apple II floating around will be fun.

Yes, season 2 could include Apple ]['s based on the timeline, but having early HP desktops from the 98xx series would be more realistic.

First season is good. I remember the goosebumps at the opening sequence.

The good thing about this series’ premise is that the narration may even jump 100, 1000 years at some point, Seveneves-style.

Quite possible, but please god no. That didn’t sit well in Seveneves for me either and felt as if written by someone else.

That only applies to newer Star Trek in my opinion.
It feels like CBS and Kurtzman are just throwing poorly written ideas against a wall to see what sticks while The Orville actually feels like Star Trek, even with the comedy. I have never seen a production company try and push so many series like they are doing with Star Trek. Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds, Prodigy. And they all seem to be coming from the same terrible writing staff.

This was fantastic, but watching it juxtaposed to Netflix’s space force is kind of funny, as both deal with arms in space. Simply an interesting zeitgeist.

Agreed, there’s a ton of crap material out there. Orville seems to be deeply inspired by the Star Trek ideas from the 90s which I personally much prefer to anything older or newer in the ST universe.
