Agreed, there’s a ton of crap material out there. Orville seems to be deeply inspired by the Star Trek ideas from the 90s which I personally much prefer to anything older or newer in the ST universe.

For me, Orville is more "Family Guy in Space" than ST inspired. Still enjoyable.

I consider ST:TOS is the gold standard, DS9 the best spinoff and Enterprise a well done prequel. Discovery has been interesting.

The movie reboot was necessary to keep making movies; and been enjoyable so far.

One redemption per Apple ID account.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the free year starts expiring. I suspect if they get a significant number of non-renewals tahy may simply extend the offer for renewals as well. For me, one or two series is simply not enough to justify renewing for a year. One month to binge watch would be more likely. Apple's challenge is to have enough new content on a month to month basis to maintain interest versus subscribers who watch one show and then don't renew. There are simply so many choices competing for eyeballs.

I loved season 1. Hope Apple gives me another free year with my next iDevice, otherwise I'll probably just sign up for a month during the holidays and binge all their new content.
Apple says it’s a one-off, but if their subscriber numbers aren’t what they want I could see things like a discounted year or some other deal.

Exactly! That was the single most awful thing about the season 1. But that USA for you, they grow up on this nonsense so then they end up in the struggle they are in no.
"God bless America" Hahahahahahaha - its all built in :D :D :D

Yay. More patriotic crap!

I tend to agree. While there has been a couple shows that I have really enjoyed, it isn't enough to justify a continuous subscription. I'll likely just subscribe for a month here or there to binge content when it has been fully released.

Space Force is to For all Mankind as Orville is to Star Trek.
Great analogy... especially as all 4 shows are about Space...

How is Orville? I imagine it being like Space Force with a touch of Family Guy.

Season 1 was pretty darn good, there isn't another series in the last decade that made me actually cry. It gets heavy.

In fact some of the memories of that season is coming back, and its not patriotic as you think it is. It actually tackles some of the subjects that has bothered some for quite sometime. If you are a NASA or Space race fan, it's a must watch of course.

I find Orville to be much more of the traditional situational comedy with far less over the top, campy setups that are in Space Force. Space Force is more of a farce, IMHO.

It feels like CBS and Kurtzman are just throwing poorly written ideas against a wall to see what sticks while The Orville actually feels like Star Trek, even with the comedy. I have never seen a production company try and push so many series like they are doing with Star Trek. Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds, Prodigy. And they all seem to be coming from the same terrible writing staff.

Which makes me feel sorry for Anson Mount as Captain Pike. He is a very good and charismatic actor, but to be stuck with those writers? For shame!

Reagan will be a good guy, as he was in our timeline.

Not to start a fight, but I think that a lot of people would disagree with that assessment of President Reagan.

Apple is building this over a decade. Some of the comments make me wonder what people would have said about a circa 1924 Disney. Apple is one of the very few companies in the world that can actually pull this off.

While Apple certainly has the cash for the long haul, they face some real challenges with the streaming business model:

  • The month to month model makes churn easy for the consumer; especially since binge watching means you can consume in a month content that was originally aired over several months, lessening the need for long subscriptions
  • Content owners are realizing the value of their content by setting up exclusive streaming sites; thus making it harder or significantly more expensive, for Apple to acquire licenses for a desirable back catalogue that will keep subscribers on the service
  • If Apple would license their content to other services there is less of a need to subscribe to Apple TV+; so Apple can't make money off of licensing deals without eating away at their subscriber base, especially since the best licensing content would be the most popular must see ones Apple needs to draw in new subscribers
  • If a show is a hit the stars will demand even higher salaries, so unless it's a big enough hit to draw in subscribers to cover costs the very hits that make Apple TV+ popular will be too expensive to continue
Apple could very well pull it off, the question is for how long will they be willing to lose money before deciding if its worth trying to make a hit.

Wait there are people that liked Space Force?

I thought For All Mankind smoked Space Force on pure entertainment value. Granted, they’re completely different shows.

I loved Space Force. I'm confused about people who say The Orville is a good show. I've watched every episode thus far - some are good, but I find most of them to be mediocre.

For All Mankind is also fantastic.

I don't think stating Star Trek is A+++ is necessary, is it? Some of the series are better than others, but as long as we ignore The Animated Series, they're all fantastic.

You just described what Disney is doing and HBO already started doing long ago. Apple is aiming for quality over quantity. You can reduce that to big stars and budgets aiming for lowest common denominator if you want to but you would be wrong if you think that’s the goal. Apple is looking to brand themselves as a curator for reliable and predictable high production value. That is not the same as predictable stories and characters. With Netflix, Hulu and Amazon, you have many hits and many misses. Apple wants viewers to come to Apple TV+ with high expectations of quality programming. It might not be as challenging or controversial as other smaller shows but to me, every Apple show feels like a polished work made with care even if I didn’t personally like every show. In other words, Apple TV+ is like shopping in the Apple Store while Netflix is like shopping in a flea market. Both have value but only Apple Store delivers consistent quality and experience throughout.

Disney? Yes. HBO? Not so much. HBO generally does not rely on big stars. That has changed somewhat in recent years, but HBO takes a lot of chances. I agree with your perspective in general, though. I think your shopping metaphor is quite spot on. As someone who finds the Apple Store incredibly dull, it rings true to me. There are far more misses at the flea market, but the hits are always much sweeter. The Apple Store is brilliant, don't get me wrong. Apple has done a remarkable job of making tech accessible to the masses. From a techie perspective, however, it leaves a lot to be desired.

I hadn't watched anything on ATV+ until last night. I decided to watch the first episode of FAM. Despite being a big fan of sci-fi and a huge Battlestar Galactica fan, the premise of FAM just doesn't interest me. But I needed something new to watch and thought I'd finally give it a look. Obviously I can't judge the show based on one episode. I thought they did a good job of setting up the premise and introducing the characters. I feel like I've seen all of these characters before, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. For me the first episode had a bit too much of a nostalgic feel, which I found predictable. Period pieces are tough. The moon landing era has already been explored in some really great films. FAM will need to find an authentic voice to retain my interest, but I'm certainly going to give it a few episodes.

Star Trek is ruined. The movies are soulless. Abrams did his remix magic in the first two, but each time the final result was forgettable, empty calories. The third? Ugh.

I have mixed feelings on Discovery. I don't hate it, but it also just doesn't really feel like Trek to me. It's Trek on the surface, but that's as far as it goes. Picard, on the other hand, was crushing. When his old number 1 (I can't even remember her name) called him "JL" and started vaping, I should have known to just give up. Shockingly bad.

There is a stylistic continuity between the original series, TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise. Even though they were made in different decades and explored different eras in the Trek universe, they all felt like they belonged to the same universe. Discovery barely feels like it belongs in that universe and Picard outright crapped all over that universe. And that's being generous. I honestly can't believe Patrick Stewart signed on to completely murder his beloved character.

Trek is ruined. Thank goodness for The Expanse! Season 4 was epic.

So far I've found Apple TV+'s repertoire of content pretty underwhelming in general. The only reason I still have a subscription is because I got one free with a hardware purchase.

Interesting view. I am of the exact opposite opinion. Of course, we don't all like the same things, so that's fine, but from where I'm standing, Apple TV+'s repertoire beats all the other streaming subscription services I pay for (yes, I pay for Apple TV+ too). All excellent stories, highly inspirational and an absolute joy to watch. Currently watching Little Voice and it's amazing! The way I see it, what Apple does is a step beyond just entertainment. It's totally worth 5 quid/month.

I went on the Paramount Pictures tour in Hollywood a year or so ago and I saw a large row of the Starwagons of stars filming Apple-funded films for TV+, and one studio they didn't let us get much of a look at. But it certainly was high-grade pricey. I love the budgets they put together for these series, they are no slouch. Better than paying for cable anyway for that matter.

I felt Discovery had a great first episode, a meh first season and then picked up steam with Christopher Pike in the second. But many of the characters seem forced or inappropriate for Star Fleet. It’s almost like they took the rejects from TNG and gave them their own show.

I still haven’t gotten past halfway with Picard. Actually, I forgot all about it.

Apple is building up their library in interesting ways. I liked the first season and will be watching the second one. I only hope the pace at which Apple releases content picks up a little and that they don't forego, especially in the documentary section, some social topics and some "controversial" content. So far I liked some of it but "Dads" and the one about the letters where really, really, really poor. Apple should step it up in the documentary department big time.

I am also a subscriber of Disney+ (because I am a dad... Had to...). So far it seems the least interesting service. Only "old" stuff and nothing really "adult". I am not a Star Wars or Marvel fan, so all in all there's nothing interesting being released. And I hope there was...

Overall I must say Netflix is really "unbeatable" at the moment. And they also have, contrary to some belief, a LOT of interesting things for kids (which also means that not only Disney does kids stuff).

My personal preference:

- Netflix (especially documentaries, and series like "mind hunter")
- AppleTV (See, for all mankind)
- Disney + (especially, and ONLY, because of back catalog for kids)
