EXACTLY! It's not just about the phone. It's the experience. I met some great people during the 4 hour wait. It was a nice escape from the daily grind of living. I would definitely do it again.

me too!

**** i waited twice, i waited from 2am till 8am the first day, but couldn't get it because of corporate discount.

So I called and cancelled and the next day I woke up at 6:30 - got to the mall at 7am, and was number 50 in line, i waited from 7am-11:30 the second day and walked out a very happy customer...

All in those two days, i met some awesome people, and even a psychic in line... I still keep in contact w/ one person and he is now my buddy... i didn't lose anything waiting in those days.

All I can say is...I actually had a good time waiting with good people. These types of events can be fun for people with common interests and excitement.

Whatever happened to "Live and let Live"?

I know of things that others do that I personally wouldn't do, but I don't feel the need to attack them personally by calling them crazy or worse yet, Losers!!

And I'd certainly not waste my time posting something like the OP has. But that's just me.

To all of you that did wait in line, hats off to you for doing what you wanted to do.

To all of you who chose to wait until all the hype has subsided, well, hats off to you as well for doing what you wanted to do.

wtf do people care what other people do? If you think it's crazy, don't do it.

For the record, I got my original iphone (which I still have - I'll not be upgrading this time around) 2 days after iday last year, and yes, I did just walk in and get one. But why would I judge people who waited in line? Live and let live, you know?

edit: heh, didn't see the previous poster's "live and let live." Indeed. :)

Right..... Well here's a hot tip for you.. (Don't tell anyone) If you run to the Apple store now, you might just be at the head of the que for the launch of the new iPhone 4G in December 2009. You'll have the time of your life waiting! Think of all the people you'll meet.. Policemen, traffic wardens, street cleaners, mental health specialists..

Hold it right there... Where did I say I had an iPhone 3G? I just said I liked the iPhone a lot, but I don't buy into all the frenzied hype.

This "But I enjoy the waiting inline and meeting people" is nothing but an excuse for falling into the hype trap. A scapegoat if you will. You can wait to get into a bar if you want and meet LOTS of people, but I don't see people harking on about that day in day out.

Anyway, forgive me for being mean spirited. Because indeed I was! Again, I like the product, I just lack the desire to kiss Jobs backside and get all wet & dribbly for an iPhone 3G on day 1.
I assumed you had an iPhone 3G considering you are posting in threads all over the app store giving your opinion on the 345 firmware and on apps like Aurora Feint. How would you have an opinion on a game you would not have played unless you had an iPhone? And the bar example is pretty half assed at best. The reason people campd is cause it's a new device. That's the reason it was talked about so much. And some people do talk about their "bar" experiences all day and night, people just don't care. The "scapegoat" line is bogus also. If somebody is social and meets new people while waiting for the phone why is that a scapegoat??
P.S. My bad I realized you have a gen 1 iPhone

I queued for the first iPhone launch. I met and had fun talking to many new people.

So tell me what social interactions you did that day?

Total spin job. People wanted to go get a phone and meet people. They got to do both at the same time.

"I just lack the desire to kiss Jobs backside and get all wet & dribbly for an iPhone 3G on day 1."

Time to lose that desire to trash other people for their choices. It is so sad that your life seems to be centered around what other people do.

So yah i waited in line but it was fun did not have anything better to do it summer and i have no school work but no school i think our favorite thing was that we decided to put the logo Activation Error on every Device we could touch :)

People waiting in huge lines for thes consumables are extremely pathetic.

They're the nerdy die had apple fans that will do anything for an iphone

oOr people who try to jump on me, yes i do have an iphone, i merely strolled in at 10ish am walked passed the huge line that had formed outside, literally 5 minutes later walked out with a 16gb white one, ( in all fairness dad did talk to o2 and got them to kick someone of the reserve list :D) but even still wouldnt line up for hours for one.

No im not furuiously masterbating pver the iphone like others .....

Why would you do this?

Why not at the time the activation servers were down and well we were all getting tired of waiting 25 minutes for one person to get there phone what better was there to do it not damaging before we made it out of the store they were all being changed by other people

oh yeah Daddy bought his phone ;)

& his dad is sooooooo high powered to get someone kicked off the reserve list...

That show's how immature and anxious you were to get your iPhone to where your DADDY had to get someone kicked off a list, and thats immaturity as well....

wow. So you pulled strings to get someone kicked off the list, and you have the gall to mock others who followed the rules? And now you act superior because of it? Unbelievable. Grow up.

So creating work for someone to undo what you did, plus add stress to the situation seemed liked a good idea?

Amazing. Simply amazing. :(

Has anyone brought up the fact that waiting in line for 5-10 hours for this iPhone is just a bit crazy? Why would anyone waste so much time of their weekend when they can go later this week, walk in, and buy one without waiting. Apple stores will be getting shipments almost daily and you'll be able to walk in and purchase one within 20 minutes.

I was upgrading from the original iPhone. My only option was going to an O2 store. I queued from 6.10 until 8.02 to get the phone and then maybe 30 minutes in store to get the phone.

My original iPhone has been sold on eBay and I needed to post it so I really didn't want to have to wait any longer to get a new iPhone.

Also, the way supplies at O2 are shaping up, I didn't want to be in a situation where I was going to have to keep calling the stores to check if they'd had a stock delivery and then race to an O2 store in the hope that I'd get a phone.

Rather just get it from day one and then it's done. However, I wouldn't have queued overnight like some did. A couple of hours was as much as I was prepared to do.

Am I missing something here? Is this a joke?

That's really the reason people do it. Its just the experience and the people you meet.

I guess you are all young. Give it a few years, you'll learn to hate everyone

I learned my lesson in 1986 when I slept on a sidewalk in front of a Jamesway for Van Halen tickets, and I still got nose-bleed seats. And it wasn't even David Lee Roth!

Off topic but.....your bank didn't screw you over. This is a personal responsibility issue. If you buy a home you should know what your income is and whether you can make the mortgage payment every month. The bank isn't your mother or father. You are your own keeper.

I knew when I read the title to this thread that the OP was gonna get smashed in here but, I totally agree with him. I spent my Friday and Saturday on the lake wakeboarding and enjoying the weather. I also met several new friends at the restaurant/bar after I got off the lake so I accomplished both I think. I dont have the 3G iphone yet but I have the satisfaction that purchasing a cell phone wasn't the top priority in my life.

Get outside....thats where life is.

I was outside when I queued up. We don't have a subprime mortgage crisis over here. Apart from that: I do disagree with you, at least partly. The reason why we don't have a mortgage crisis here is that Swiss banks simply won't give money to people who can't afford a house. Downpayments here are at least 20%. Houses typically cost between 800'000$ and 1'000'000 dollars. So without saving up at least 150'000$, you'll never get a mortgage.

Also, I didn't lose my home - I'll be saving for at least another 4 years until I can afford one.

got one this morning - no wait

just picked up my iPhone at local AT&T store this morning (Chicago loop) - 5 people in line - took 10 minutes. Love it. Voice quality is definitely better as are 3g speeds. Already have someone lined up to buy my old one...

Who cares if people wait in line? I think it's crazy too to camp out, but hey, they're die-hard fans and had a good time.

I got up at 830 AM just to go get the iPhone - and I consider that crazy even for me - but hey, it was fun.

I find it laughable that people think that waiting in line for hours is a fun social experience. It's not like you can mingle and meet lots of people... you're basically stuck between the few people around you for a very very very long time. What do you talk about after the fifth hour? If I wanted to socialize, then standing in line in front of an Apple store would be the last place I would think of.

And yes I agree with live and let live... but I can make fun and laugh at you for doing something completely ridiculous.

And whoever said that they waited a year for the release and could not wait another day... what ???? .... you waited an entire year... what difference does a couple of days make?

One of my main points is that this 3G iPhone is not THAT much better than the original one that it's worth sitting in line so long for. I could understand this a bit more last year when we didn't know what the availability would be and also that it was such a monumental release and a new product. But this time around it doesn't make sense. Just as someone else said, everyone played into the hype.... and Jobs and Co. loved it. I'm sure one of the reasons they switched to in store activation was to make the lines longer since they cleared so fast last year.

Rules.....theres nothing illegal about asking someone to do you a favour....if o2 wishes to kick someone of the reserve list, that is their right is it not ?

I got mine on iDay1 and all these girls were asking about my phone.

..........TOTALLY WORTH 300 bucks and 8 hours of waiting.
