When I was a kid in the early 1990s, I remember seeing teenagers walking around carrying MASSIVE boom boxes over their shoulder in order to listen to music on the go.

It wasn't ridiculous then. It is now.

The whole point of Apple Silicon was to ditch the limitations of Intel.... yet, out the gate, we already ridiculously thicker so as to avoid heat issues....

Truth be told, I'd rather it be thicker and more powerful with better battery than be slim and have performance issues.

Comparing it to my 2018 15”…the difference in weight is minimal. The difference in girth seems more substantial.

This is a ridiculous analogy. If you saw me walking in the airport you couldn't tell if I had a 16" Pro or an Air in my backpack.

Weight is fine but coming from 2018 15", it feels a lot less portable. The 15" was thin and light, so felt easy to carry. But I appreciate the improvements inside.

I agree with a lot of the posters here. I just went to the Apple Store today to check out the new models, while I await mine to arrive later this week, and I have to say that when you first look at it, it looks heavy, but if you are used to carrying the 2019 16-inch model, there is not that much of a difference in weight at all. I I found it to balance quite well despite it looking "chunky". I think many of the folks on YouTube are 13 inch MacBook Pro users, so naturally they are intimidated by the bigger size. But if you are a current 16 inch user, this will be a welcomed upgrade. The screen is insane! And I don't say that lightly! I'm on team 16 for sure!

Came from the 13" MacBook Pro to the new 16 inch model. It IS noticeably heavier than I expected. But still portable enough for travel, and the screen is absolutely stellar. No regrets.

It's only 100g heavier than my current 15" 2015 rMBP. And only 2/3rd of the weight of my old 17" MBP. I've travelled the world with both. Anyone having issues with this needs to have a good hard look in the mirror and re-evaluate their life. It's not heavy, you're just soft.

I agree. I just started my new steroid cycle for these 16" bad boys. Should I also add in HGH to the mix for this additional 100g in extra weight?

Its a great couch size feels really solid and easy to work on. I dont need to carry mine much but having this size a week now I would not want a smaller one.

That merely highlights how little effort Apple put into cooling design in the Intels. Yep, it's quite ironic that they now have put so much care and effort into the cooling of the M1 series laptops.

For as big as it is, I was actually shocked at the weight picking it up just now. It’s way more manageable than a lot of people seem to be making it out to be. If portability is a high, high priority for you, the 14 is great. The 16 is still plenty portable and because my highest priority is having an optimized workstation laptop for video production, the 16 fits the bill. I’ll take the added weight and slightly less portability, for bigger screen, better battery, high power mode and more.

For reference, I’m coming from the M1 13 map and was a touch worried about the size and weight. Nope! Not at all.

I was going to post something similar.... the 16" pro feels lighter than you expect it to be... the 14" pro does feel heavy for its size (I know this is not a fair comparison).... it will all be subjective... but probably going in... I expected the 16" to weigh a lot more.

Coming from a 17” Alienware gaming laptop the 16” MBP feels light in comparison. I also have my previous 2015 15” MBP next to me and it honestly doesn’t feel any different to it.

I had a 2019 16” MacBook Pro that I originally traded in for a 14” I thought I would like it cause I am usually docked and using external monitors. I used it for a few days and ended up trading it for a 16” pro. The 14” was heavier than I thought it would be and the screen was smaller than I anticipated it would be. The weight of the 16 inch is distributed better than the one I traded in and the screen is so amazing.

The weight is not so bad. The hard part for me is just getting used to the size. I bought the 13" MBA to tide me over and got used to its small size. I could put it any small ledge and it fits. With the 16", I have to be a lot more careful of where I put it.

I am still trying to decide whether I will keep it.

The reason I didn't like the 13 MBA was because everything felt very cramped with the small display. The display of the 16" is in a totally different size league. After working with the 13", I feel like I have so much more display space. On the 13 inch, some websites hardly fit on the screen, but with the 16", I have space left over. The same with code as well. I can see so much more code on this one.

Love the new 16" MBP. I previously tried, really TRIED to love my 2019 13" MBP, but after several bouts of raging frustration while attempting to build webpage on that tiny screen I gave up and bought the then-new 16".

Just traded that one in to Apple for this new 2021 MBP, which has even (a bit) more screen real estate! Bliss!
My only portability need is around the my home. Been taking my 12.9" iPad Pro and Magic keyboard (which together still weigh 1/2 pound less than the 14" MBP) when working out-of-doors.

Without a doubt it is heavier, however, nothing that bothers you. But the thickness really bothers me a lot in terms of aesthetics, it's like I was in 2009 with my first MBP 17". Looks Bulky but not feels that bulky.

I remember using this, so in my eyes the 16" is a featherlight marvel of engineering. Everything is a matter of perspective!

This will be my set up - I’m in the 16 MPB Max crowd for keeps, it is incredibly good, and I’ll use my M1 12.9 iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard for on the fly. Got to laugh at people getting stressed about the size and portability of the 16. My late lamented 17inch MBP went absolutely everywhere with me, planes, trains, boats etc. No issues.

If this was what Apple had shown 2 weeks ago, the number of folks here and on YouTube praising them for getting the cooling system just right and marvelling «look at the insane battery life!» and «would you rather have a display that’s so thin it could break any minute?!» and «WOW! that keyboard is what professionals wanted all along!» would be overwhelming.

Just got the 16" and picking it up tonight. Curious as to those who've gotten their 16".

I keep hearing everyone say how heavy it is but usually when comparing to the 14". I had a 2019 16" that I thought wasn't too bad. How hefty do you feel it is now that you have it in your hands?

Would you use it on your lap (obviously mostly desk for many)?

I have the older 2016 (2019) 16" and now the 2021 M1 Pro 16." If I hold them both in each hand I really can't tell that one weighs more. I can kind of talk myself into feeling the older one is lighter, but really, they feel so similar in weight. The newer one feels bulkier though, but really not in a bad way to me, I like those squared off edges, easier to grab and hold onto, I feel more secure with it. I am using it in my lap and my legs haven't lost any blood flow :) I will have no issues taking it out of the house.

Size and weight are no problem for me, coming from 2019 16”. I actually find the weight to be better distributed, and the body feels slightly sturdier. I was very surprised to feel this way.

Exactly, you don't feel like this one will ever twist or warp on you. You pick it up and it feels... robust.
