I just did it from a torrent file upped today.

Everything went fine, just (OS X) Alt + restored and it worked fine.

No developer UDID or anything needed.

interesting...in the keynote they said u needed to be a registered dev

If I happen to come across a torrent to get 3.0 am I risking anything by downloading and installing it?

Look at the comments on that link, they state that the warning that the phone will stay on the developers release and not a commercial version is wrong.

That's because people can't read, apparently. It says you are locked from PREVIOUS firmwares, not from the official 3.0...

If the GM is ready why is apple making the masses wait a week? is it just for the dev's sake or is there a real reason, I DL'ed the update but I am too hesitant to actually pull the trigger, I don't want a ibrick, but i did update my original iphone to 2.0 early. someone please clarify: Is there a risk in updating today?

Because this was if they find any major bugs in the GM they have time to fix them before the release. Also gives time for developers to fix their own apps.

I read someone else say that carriers require testing of software for a number of days before it can be released to the masses. Therefore, this final version will be the same one released next week, but developers are able to access it early for 'testing'.

Donation? That's ridiculous, the software is free unless you have a iPod Touch. Just wait until it comes out, play it safe.

Trust me, these days if you want it bad enough you can get anything for free. Its sad but true. :(

would people who aren't registered devs eat a crap sandwich by upgrading today? I'm a typical Macrumors level iphone user, and to my knowledge messing with the baseband is scary stuff, I'm not too afraid of upgrading early, I did with 2.0 and i was glad i did because i missed the iapocalypse of 08, so is this just like that? and i don't need a UDID?

From what people are saying you don't need a UDID.. which sounds like everything should be fine. I downloaded this but I'm hesitant to actually do it.

I think this is a smart move from Apple, early apdoters like many of us will find a way to get it and install it earlier (I did today and I am very pleased with performance, everything seems to work ok, much better than the last beta I tried) and it will take some load off the servers.

Everything went good and it didn't ask you for a UDID or any developer information?

Why is everyone so suspicious of 3.0 GM???

It's just like any other previous beta but with a different build number, 7A341 that is. Please, don't be stupid.

Fine, wanna feel better? Wanna feel better? GM = 7A341 = Beta6.

What build did you use? I found build 7A341 and want to make sure that it's legit.

I believe it's for iPhone 3G
