Im gonna do it, ill post how it goes, doing a back up, then im pulling the trigger.

Everything went good and it didn't ask you for a UDID or any developer information?

My iPhone was already registered. However after reading comments that it didn't require registration as a developer, my dad asked me to update his. It worked fine, everything is working well. Really surprised with this build, after bad experiences with previous builds.

no UDID or anything? what build did you use? i have: iPhone1,2_3.0_7a341_Restore.ipsw

I am thinking of doing it right now.

no udid or anything. just downloaded the 7a341 file. held down option and clicked on restore. then chose the file and restored. everythings fine lol

I just hope it does not take forever to unlock 3.0. I go to europe quite a bit and rely on my unlocked iphone.

(phone is about 1/2 done updating) from what ive read 3.0 has aready been unlocked, not sure about diffrent carriers though

If I update to 3.0 now, will all of my music, applications, etc still sync to my 3G iPhone?

iphone is activated, restore in progress, I think everything is fine, I haven't been able to play with it yet, but everything seem to go smoothy.

If you back it up. It's just like any other update you've applied.

I'm about halfway done syncing my music and stuff back on (it takes a ridiculously long time :().

7A341 is what i used, all is well have no fear.

I found it on megaupload and downloaded it with Safari. Its just a folder correct? Im going to try and restore now.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't I repeat DO NOT download with Safari. Use any other browser you have. The same thing happened last year with 2.0 when people used Safari to download. Something with the auto unpack or what have you.

Beat to it oh well =p

I think safari can "unzip" the file and is doing it automatically for some reason.

Yeah its something along the lines of that I remember it being a big problem last year and couldn't remember if it caused any problems with the Phone it self.

it doesnt cause problems with the phone, it just makes a folder instead of the ispw file you need.

Torrent it or download it from megaupload through firefox. Works perfect.

good idea. or just wait till you can through iTunes

Hmm. I'm a bit cautious about this, so bare with me on the seemingly obvious questions.

To update my iPhone 3G, what are the steps I have to take? I know I'm holding option or something while clicking restore, then what? Also, how can I be sure everything (music, apps, contacts, pics, etc) are back onto my phone afterwards? I just backed up...

Is this brick-proof? Can I upgrade to 3.0 next wednesday, no problems?

Sorry for all the questions, but I do appreciate the help. Thank you.

Guys for those scared about doing this... do not be!

Whoever sdid you will be locked out of next weeks release is ridiculous. The fine print says you will be locked into testing mode and not be able to revert to any software BEFORE 3.0. Nowhere does it say you will be locked out of other firmware versions ahead. Even the real release.

Think about it. This file no longer needs a dev account to work, it is the official release and completely legit which means all they are doing is logging into their account and getting the ispw file of 3.0 essentially. We are just doing it in a different manner. Really.

I was able to upgrade to 3.0 using the build used by other users without a hitch! For those who can't wait, go for it!

Works fine here with no problems. MMS working on O2 as well.

Only thing I see is that my photos I have taken do not so up in iPhoto when my phone is plugged in.

They've slightly changed the MMS message view as well, much, much better now. It seems to show the text associated with the picture twice though.
