When my wife and I got the Ipad 1 we bought the Apple case for it, same for when we got an Ipad 3. They definitely kept the tablets in "like new" condition, free of scratches, but definitely added some weight to them.

I realize that people who take their Ipads to work/school/travel probably use a case or cover, but what about all the people that never take their Ipads out of their house? My wife and I have never dropped either of the Ipads, but how easily do they scratch up if they are not in a case?

We want a new upcoming Ipad, not sure if it will be the Mini 2 or the Ipad 5 for the sake of a lighter, easier to hold Ipad, I just wonder if putting a case on either will significantly weigh them down, and if we don't buy a case for it will it look like it went through a battle if they scratch easy.

Yes.

Glass tables. Omg the sound it makes when naked setting down metal on glass.

I use the Smart Cover for my iPad. Although I'm only using it within the limits of my home I fear of scratches on the device.

I've always only used a Smart Cover, but when my MagBak gets here we will add that as well. Looking forward to the added utility more than any protection

I have a wifi only model, but I use it at home/hotel mainly, and I'm very happy with the Smartcase.

Only Smart Cover here.... it is useful because prevents dust from screen and it is easier to lock/unlock the device...

I think it all depends on how long you plan to keep your iPad.If you are going to upgrade every year to the latest iPad,then it's probably a good idea to use a full cover and keep it scratch free to get a good resale price.

If you plan to keep it till it for years until it becomes obsolete like the iPad 1 then a few scratches is not going to make any difference because nobody is going to pay a lot of money even for a brand new looking iPad 1.

I hate having a cover on it because it's thicker and heavier and tiring to hold.I don't see the need to baby devices that will be obsolete in a few years.Enjoy it to the full while it's still state of the art.

I very rarely use my iPad outdoors, but I have a case on mine. I use a case more because it has multiple viewing angles on it. I don't really need any protection for my iPad when using it around the house.

I have an Apple SmartCover for my iPad 2 and am pleased with it.

No other case or anything except that I did put 4 small transparent round plastic adhesive "feet" on the back to prevent scratching/slipping when sitting on hard surfaces.

When traveling, I just put the iPad as described above into a pocket in my travel bag. Have had no problems or issues.

Mine never leaves home so I use it naked but have a screen protector and store it in a Rickshaw sleeve when not in use.

It's flawless.

Like others have said, I only use a case/cover because of my 4 year old that doesn't tend to grasp the value of certain things!

The original iPad was the only naked one as she wasn't old enough to be "getting into things" yet!
