Thanks Jester, i just did that and for some reason i dont see a new serial number just the one im sending back. It says my replacement shipped, wonder why i dont get a serial for the new phone. Again yours came in a reatial box or those replacement boxes ?

Log into the apple support site and you should see your shipped phone serial number.
https://supportprofile.apple.com/

Then go here to check detail on your phone (i.e. week made and which factory etc...)

Strange...
So after you log in, you don't see your existing iP5 and another one?
I see the existing one I'm having issue with along with another new one I think I have yet to receive.
Mine is shipped out of China and I should be getting it tomorrow or thursday (conflicting estimate dates, Apple says thursday, but UPS says tomorrow) so I don't know what I'll be receiving; however, I'm am hoping that it'll be a retail box cause the model number shown for the new one starts with MD.

Now, with that serial number, go to the 2nd link I posted above to get more info on your phone. It should also tell you the model number which for me, starts with MD. And mine serial number starts with F1 which means a factory in China and it is made on week 38. What does yours say?
by the way, my replacement serial starts with F2

Was your new phone (that you got 5 days later) shipped with retail box or just white slim box? And what is the model number on your new phone (Should start with either MD or ND)? Thanks

Yes replacement phone was new in retail box along with all included accessories.:)

I am not sure if you are on the right page. After I log into my first link. It does not contain any info about shipping or tracking, just trouble tickets. It looks like you are looking at account order history or something which is not the same page as the support profile page that i'm getting the serial from.

Yea its weird, im on the page and it shows me the serial that im sedning back and i looked all over the site and nothing about the new serial. I called apple care and asked them if they can provide me with the serial of the phone that shipped and they told me they dont know it LOL.

All I know is that if mine is not in a retail box it's going back , I want it new because if I want to return it change carriers within 30 days i can't unless its the same phone serial as the box

I was sent a replacement phone (not in new retail box) and it had significant cosmetic damage (even a couple dents). So I called up the CS contact and they apologized and said to send it right back. I might be near a actual Apple store this week so I will just use that instead.

Why does it matter if it's in a retail box or a small white box? The phone only came out a week or so ago the phone is going to be brand new regardless.

Strange that some peeps say they got new retail box replacements an some not? Within 30 days u should get a sealed box

I wonder what it was like last year for 4S. Was Apple replacing customers with white slim boxes if they find defects (cosmetic or not) right after they bought their 4S or even 4 for that matter... Anyone remember?

sometimes when people are buying a phone off craigslist, they want to make sure the IMEI on the box and phone match up for warranty/theft purposes.

Got my iPhone 5 and the microphone was broken. Called Apple late friday and they send a new saturday night in a replacement box. Got i on monday and that phone had marks on the aluminiumframe.
Called Apple again and now i need to send it back... UPS Standard (return) is slow as hell....

My story with Applecare CS

I have 3 iPhone 5's with me right now, thanks to Applecare CS f***up.

Got it in pre-order and had screen problem(green line from top to bottom on the left side) right out of the box, called applecare for replacement and after 3 days and nonstop 3 hours on 3rd day on the phone arguing over why I should accept a tech support replacement when it is defective right out of the box and I insisted on retail box replacement. Finally somebody agreed to place a replacement order for brand new retail box and was told I will get an email with order acknowledgement. No credit card hold.

Waited for a day, no email. Called Applecare for update and I was told the guy I spoke to never placed/completed the replacement request. He offered me that he could get me a retail box replacement. I agreed to proceed and I confirmed more than once that it will be retail box and he said yes. Credit card on hold for $649+ taxes

Received email the same night that my replacement phone has been shipped and it shipped from PA. I knew it would be just phone replacement, not retail box. I waited until FedEx guy showed up and yes, it is just phone in a white box. Came with FedEx return label on it.

I emailed the Applecare CS guy and told him I will not use it unless he gets me retail box replacement and I told me if he can't then I will go and return the phone and place another order to get a retail box phone. He replied saying he will get back to me in a day or two. Never replied back to me. Still waiting for his email as of this hour, 10/2 10 PM EST.

The same night I got an email that I have a phone shipped from China. I believe this was from my first CS guy but not sure. It shipped with the same order# as my preorder. Phone delivered today and it is brand new in retail box.

I am going to return the original defective phone with the FedEx return label that I got and get rid of the credit card hold.

I want to see how Applecare is going to contact me and get the second phone back with no credit card authorization on it. Not that I want to keep it, I want them to feel the pain that they caused me by making me run from pillar to post to get a replacement for an obvious defect.

In order of questions:

1. It arrived in a shorter, flatter box, akin to the boxes that you'd get if you were to buy, say, a laptop hard drive. It's just big enough to hold the phone and the 'Sorry about that' flyer with the SIM removal tool.

2. Nope, it's not.

Frankly, long as you keep the paperwork, you should be fine; I know VERY few people who care if the serial #'s match, just so long as it's in good working condition.

I paid the $99 for Applecare+ and it's paid for itself so far. :)

We had two replaced and they threw in the extra chargers, lighting cables and earpods. we dont have applecare.

i did express replacement on a sunday, got phone tuesday. I got mine in the replacement white box. I kept original charger and headphones. I'd rather have this type of replacement, as these are actually inspected by apple care techs (like refurbished) before sending or giving out (there's a sticker that says inspected by apple care tech blah blah). Getting retail box means getting it straight from the factory with possibility of defects. Sure enough, replacement ip5 had no issues cosmetics or function. Good job apple cs (although it took like 2 hours and 2 sr. advisors on the phone to get through the whole process). In the end, it all worked out. gl.

Mine new serial shows up finally, and it looks like I'm getting a MD model, does this mean retail box unit ?

I have read incidents of MD in white slim box, but mostly, white slim boxes have ND model number. So, cross your fingers, your probability of getting retail box just went a bit higher. What week is your unit made? That could also be an indicator.
