It'd actually be nice to be able to shuffle through the music player while I'm driving without having to use my hands. Maybe you can give the phone a name. "Oh Karl, play some random Nirvana ****...now!"

And this is new how ? My Android phones have had voice to text for years, voice to call, etc...but Apple will say it's "revolutionary" and "Magical"

I think forbes is confusing iPhone 5 with iOS 5. IMO this "assistant" is a feature that an iP4 is more than capable of doing, and will get in the iOS 5 update.

I may not be remembering correctly but I thought I read an article that the i4 wont be supported with the voice assistant. Apple wants it in the processor upgraded handset.

Im not sure anyone knows for sure, but it reportedly taked a lot to process so dual core and 1GB ram are necessary for a good user experience, especially if you consider multitasking. Google sends their stuff to their servers and send back the results, if the rumors are true apple will be doing it all locally on the device.

Can't wait to get it. To be able to dictate and use the assistant feature with my etymotics would be amazing.

You can do this now using the Voice Control that was introduced with iOS 3.
In fact, I just did exactly what you said, sans Karl (mine is named Carlos) :p
But seriously, I just said "play songs by Nirvana" and About a Girl immediately started playing.

On the contrary, I suspect that iPhone 4 will not receive the feature. I suspect Apple will say that they wanted to extend the feature to the iPhone 4 but only the latest greatest handset has the RAM and CPU horsepower to "deliver a quality experience."

That would make sense as to why their introducing a 4S. A phone with enough power to supply the experience while not cutting into the iPhone 5 sales

Just like Facetime dude, I guess this will be this year's facetime........and I am an iPhone 4 user and don't plan to buy and Android phone, but the statements Apple do when they implement something that their competitors have had for years are plain ridiculous.

BTW, the iPhone 4 surely has enough power to handle this, just as lesser Android phones have had this feature before, however I am sure Apple won't implement it on current devices to give users an additional reason to upgrade, just like MMS on original iPhone and way too many other artificial limitations to list here.

"This is my iPhone, there are many like it but this one is mine". Her name is Sharmane

Processing power is not a fixed variable for voice recognition. It probably could be done on the iPhone 4, but without a doubt it can be done better on the iPhone 5.

Yeah, it certainly needs super advanced software to work, again just like MMS couldn't run on an original iPhone (but curiously worked on countless dumbphones before.

Oy vey.

Look, I don't doubt that Apple does put in artificial restrictions to encourage those to upgrade. However it is a fact that processing power can strongly influence the speed and accuracy of voice recognition.

best thread ever.

egg + face = Spectrum Abuser.

Back to the topic at hand.....Although not needed for most of us apple gadget lovers, they may need a "killer app" to get others to upgrade to the 5 instead of going to android. For that reason I can see them making this a 5 only feature.

Its not like they haven't done something like this in the past.

If it's true then all I have to say is... wow. The most revolutionary user interface IN HISTORY. Sounds good to me.

Trying to figure out why it takes a Forbes article about Assistant for people to recognize the impact of it. Think for yourselves y'all!

So has anyone else downloaded the Siri app after reading about how Apple bought them and may be integrating vouce control, ect ect? I dl'd it & have been playing with it, and its good but still needs some work. Took three tries for it to understand 'remind me to call Rick later'. First try was 'remind me to call cleaning later'.

That said tho, i can say 'nearest gas station and it got that right away and gave me a list of stations by my house. Hopefully when Apple implements it, it'll be solid.

Btw, i also agree that a lot of time the prompts sort of negate the whole point of using VC. they should allow you, if the tech works well enough, to turn offthose prompts, so it's truly voice control.
