I have no desire to talk to my phone unless someone is on the other end and I doubt Im alone

If you've ever sat in on our local Traffic Courts, you'd be amazed at how many people are there for tickets for texting while driving. If this works as advertised, it will be a nice added feature.
Of course, it will also add to the State of California's already massive budget woes! ;)

Yeah, it certainly needs super advanced software to work, again just like MMS couldn't run on an original iPhone (but curiously worked on countless dumbphones before.

It wasnt the fact that it COULDNT run on the iPhone, AT&T felt that due to the immense amount of data usage the iPhone was going to use (remember this was pre-3G data), MMS would just add to the problem. Therefore, Apple decided to omit it until data speeds increased.

Besides, if you have ever sent an mms message on EDGE speeds you would know it takes FOREVER. Slow is something Apple isnt too keen of.

I think forbes is confusing iPhone 5 with iOS 5. IMO this "assistant" is a feature that an iP4 is more than capable of doing, and will get in the iOS 5 update.

If this were an iOS 5 feature, it would have been announced at WWDC. This is definately going to be an iPhone 5 thing, just like last year the iPhone 4 introduced FaceTime, iMovie for iPhone, and other RAM hungry things SPECIFICALLY for the iPhone 4. It wasnt until the iPad 2 that it got the same things, despite having the same processor. Also along with the iPad 2, it has Photo Booth that cant be run by the iPhone 4 due to the A5 processor being needed. This is going to be a feature that one-ups every other device until they get upgraded to 1GB of RAM or greater (iPad 3, new iPod Touch, etc.). From what I can gather with this Assistant feature, it will be like Artificial Intelligence on your iPhone, which is WAY beyond what any current Voice Control feature can even come close to doing.

It's funny you mention FaceTime -- does anyone actually USE FaceTime? Another "revolutionary" feature that gets little to no actual use beyond the novelty factor.

Which is exactly what this will be.

Actualy I use FaceTime all the time with my Wife while I'm on vacation. I have my iPad 2 jailbroken so that I can use it over 3G when Im not on WiFi... Granted I'm probably in the minority, but you have to realize that thousands of people would love to be able to talk to their phone and have it do stuff as if it were a secretary, and not have to memorize pre-designated commands, myself included.

I'm hoping to get a GF so I have a reason to.:p

The difference this time is when Tim Cook says "revolutionary" everyone won't automatically believe it.

Just by memory, those two post were created the same day and I remembered them being the lowest rated comments that I had seen on this board.

edit: just thumbed my own comment down. nice. hopefully it gets downvoted more.

Im not sure anyone knows for sure, but it reportedly taked a lot to process so dual core and 1GB ram are necessary for a good user experience, especially if you consider multitasking. Google sends their stuff to their servers and send back the results, if the rumors are true apple will be doing it all locally on the device.

Can't wait to get it. To be able to dictate and use the assistant feature with my etymotics would be amazing.

From MR front page:

"The Siri/Nuance-based voice recognition Assistant will be the major new feature in the next generation iPhone and will be an iPhone 4S/5 exclusive feature"

I am disappointed to hear that this feature *probably won't make it to the iphone 4... the idea that it requires more processing power than the ip4 can provide I think is a little hard to believe, considering my old HTC Evo used the google integrated voice commands smooth as butter, and it isn't as fast as the ip4.

This is probably just some BS that apple is going to feed us to convince us that we "need" the ip5. I am sure that the jailbreak community will help us out on this one. Sorry, unless it requires a new hardware button to operate, I just don't buy that this won't work on ip4. We shall see...
