Waze is not on Carplay.

Yeah Waze on CarPlay would be a game changer for me. Envy would go out the door lol. Hell even Google Maps on CarPlay would change my life lol.

If I'm not mistaken Waze is on Android Auto or soon to be.

I have a newer VW (16' tiguan sel) so it is probably a built in feature. Android auto is also really really good. It is nice having a car system that can be upgraded so easily. I am ready for apple to open it up to 3rd party apps. I have sirius XM, and while I can still listen to it and use carplay, it would be nice to actually use the carplay interface instead of the build in car one for xm radio.

Yeah we just need Apple to open up to more third party developers. But it's my understanding none of the Google apps will appear on CarPlay. So my hopes of using Waze, Google Maps, and Google music are slim. And the only reason why I use Google music is for commercial free YouTube lol.

It's too bad Ford sucks. Ford: Fix Or Repair Daily.

My girlfriend has a 2013 Fiesta and other than the routine maintenance, it has been pretty reliable.

My 2013 Nissan Rogue lease is up at the end of this year and I'm considering a Ford Escape as an option. As long as I have Bluetooth and am able to stream music from my iPhone to the car speakers, I'm set. But I haven't experienced CarPlay yet, so I'm sure the maps would be nice when we need them (rather than using our phones).

Prior to getting carplay, I never considered apple music since I only listen to music/radio while in the car. Now that I have carplay apple music is awesome. I can pretty much listen to anything, anytime.

I really don't get Carplay.

Who want's to be fiddling with buttons, listening to or dictating messages etc whilst driving?

I'd rather just drive, and enjoy some (increasingly rare) gadget free time.

People who want GPS directions or shock horror, music? I know I'm suggesting some wacky ideas here but these people are out there.

Carplay seems really good so far, but needs some refinement. Things like being able to customer app positions, for example, which cannot be done on my friend's system. Of course allowing other map applications would be nice as well.

definitely a long way to go, but it is leaps and bounds better than stock car interfaces.

The best thing about the '17 Escape isn't Carplay - which is already on top of SYNC 3, not replacing it - it's the fact you can start the car from anywhere with an app, and check fuel/battery/tires etc from the app.

That said, I have SYNC in my Mustang (not MyFordTouch) and with an iPod classic permanently docked in the console, I couldn't be happier. The voice commands work flawlessly every time and it allows the iPod to use the iPod's native shuffle algoritm (unlike my prior Jetta which had it's own horrible shuffle algoritm). I don't think there's any better way to listen to music in the car. Bluetooth technology doesn't let you navigate between playlists or artists or whatever, so you have to make sure you have the right playlist set on your phone before getting in the car, and then the sound quality isn't that great (yeah it's not bad, but it will never be as good as a hardwired device), and then your battery drains quicker. So at least if all you want to do is listen to music, I don't think there's any better solution than a permanently docked iPod as long as the car does a good job with voice commands etc. to navigate and switch between playlists/artists/songs, which SYNC on my Mustang does.

However if you need maps/messages/whatever, I could see the appeal of CarPlay, but not version 1.0. Maybe version like 8.0 when it's wireless and has a lot of functionality added and bugs worked out. Really though the auto manufacturers need to let Apple create the touch screens - used CarPlay in a '16 Tiguan SEL and it was still a crappy slow touchscreen, which ruined the experience. What I'm most surprised to see though is manufacturers still having their own factory nav in addition to CarPlay - who's going to use that when they can use Apple/Google maps??

Yeah I'm considering it! I just use Bluetooth audio now with Google Music which is not bad but certainly not ideal.

I don't think there's much difference between the services. Just how you use them and integration. So my desire to switch is low since I do a lot of YouTube. Plus web browser access to my music for when I'm in the office. Unfortunately iTunes is not approved software for our company.

There's give and take on the issue for me.

Will be cool to try out in my '16 Ford Edge when it's available. However I'm pretty happy with the existing SYNC3 system.

Car manufacturers are horrendously protective over every aspect of the manufacturing process - getting them to include CarPlay at all is a major success on Apples part.

Manufacturers have development road maps of at least 10 years - it's takes a long time to implement any changes hence why it appears to have taken so long for CarPlay to get going.

Gas based car? It's a joke. Pure EV or bust.

If you're buying a car that uses gas with the expectation of keeping it for more than 5 years, you're making a massive mistake. The value is going to plummet to nothing.

I'm putting down my deposit on the Tesla Model 3 in 13 days, 1 hour, and 35 minutes. It starts at $25K (after incentives) with a 200 mile range, full autonomous driving, and being a pure EV means it's stupid easy to maintain. No transmission, oil, gas, etc to maintain. It's just a couple of motors connected to a giant battery. 1/10th as many parts as an engine, meaning 1/10th as many things that can fail. $80 to swap out the battery every 50K miles (they refurbish them). The most vulnerable part of the car is the tires. It uses ordinary tires, so they'll need replacing as often as any other car, and it's just as difficult as on any other car. Recharge whenever you're at home for about $0.02/mile (gas will never be that cheap. You'd need a car getting 50 MPG at $1.00/gallon... more efficient than any hybrid I've ever seen, at a lower price than I've seen gas in the last 15 years.) Recharge for free in 30 minutes at a supercharger whenever you're going more than 200 miles on a trip.

If my current car fails before my Model 3 arrives in mid-late 2017, I'll be finding myself an old, cheap junker to get me through until then. Under no conditions will I ever be buying another gas based car that costs more than $4K.

Lol ok. It will take at least 15-20 years for electric to be in such a strong position. In the UK the infrastructure just doesn't exist to support electric cars as a mass mode of transport.

Wake Up Acura!

I left Acura because of their idiotic refusal to keep up with technological trends. You can get a Chrysler with better tech than most Acuras these days.

I'm still friends with my old Acura sales guy and all the franchise guys are livid, because all the customers ask for the same things (that Acuras don't have, or don't have standard). Shame.

I would imagine they are very similar. It is just nice since apple music is part of carplay. Being able to tell siri "shuffle songs by X or play X" is pretty awesome. Plus there are radio stations like NPR and ESPN radio.

No carplay, no buy.

Been there, done that.
2008 Focus:

Understandable. Every time a hapless customer of F.O.R.D. is stuck on a roadside or smashed into a coma because the brakes, engine, transmission, whatever, heated up or broke down at the worst possible moment, having music to listen to while idling the time away never hurts. Of course, as long as the batteries hold up...

I personally think your timeline is way off. We are at least a decade from electric being the standard if not much further. The infrastructure needs to be developed more for a fully EV to be practical IMO. For example, I live in an apartment without a garage. It wouldn't even be an option.

Sync 3 is in the 2016 models....this doesn't make sense. Nvm just read its coming as an update.

I'm assuming they want MY17s on lots before they push out an update to existing '16 vehicles, so I'd expect it 3rd-sh quarter.

Previous Ford Escape in shop zero times, new 2015 Jeep in shop 4 times 3 of which had too be towed. Don't think I'm buying another Jeep. Just using that as a reference to Ford. Everyone has there reasons for liking or disliking a type of car.

Yeah, you can tell people who haven't kept up with the current car landscape, and still use silly, dated acronyms. Seriously, Ford is building some terrific vehicles, and this is coming from someone who has owned [multiple]: BMWs, Toyota, Honda, Lexus, Chevrolet (Corvettes specifically).

I am not a fan of Ford, nor do I have any plans to get one, but Ford's reliability has dramatically improved since the Ford of the 80's and 90's.

I wouldn't say they are as reliable as Toyota, but Ford is not as bad as it used to be.

Jeep liberty was my first car in 04' and that damn thing went to the shop all of the time. Every 6 months the weight of the windows would break the window motor and have to be replaced. They never did a recall and the pieces were always plastic they replaced them with.

I drove a rental 2015 or 2016 Escape (not sure which) over the holidays. I chose it specifically because I wanted to test out the new eco-boost technology that replaced the hybrid they were previously offering. It felt like a really well built solid vehicle. It drove nicely. But I was very disappointed with the gas milage. Whatever the eco-boost does, it didn't make me feel as good as a hybrid would have about the fuel economy or the environment.

But the true low point was the infotainment system. That thing was an absolute mess, with the tiny screen mounted way up on the dash, and remotely accessed physical buttons that you had to align with the virtual buttons on the screen. I needed an instruction manual to understand how it all worked. Alsmot drove off the road the first time I was trying to figure something simple out, and realized this was going to take more attention than I could casually give it while driving.

This stands in stark contrast to they Nissan sedan I rented previously which just connected to my phone and had intuitive controls that didn't require any elaborate explanations. CarPlay will go a long way toward completing the overall experience I had with Ford. Normally I would have just ripped out the head unit and replace it with something reasonable, but unfortunately the Ford system was integrated into the dash, which would leave behind a number of buttons, even if it could physically be replaced.

Its a good thing we did not buy our Toyota for its nav system because it is the worst of the worst and we don't use it (well except for the radio, which also sucks). CarPlay could only be a step up.
