I didn't think i was having any issues with my proximity setting - however this would explain why yesterday I got disconnected 3x talking to my dad on the phone.

I really thought it was dropped calls but I was in full 5 bar signal area.. Interesting.

Ya but the proximity sensor is just a temporary issue as it can be fixed by a software update, a permanent antenna on the outside of the phone i do not think can be fixed by software.

I can't say I've had a problem with the proximity sensor on my new phone, but my roommate has had the problem with both his first, and a second replacement unit he got to replace the first when he complained about the issue. It seems to be a luck of the draw kind of thing, like the antenna issues (on that note I have no signal issues, but the same roommate does).

The only difference between us is that I got my phone yesterday at an AT&T store that had literally just gotten it in off the delivery truck (watched them open the box and pull out the stack of phones), while my roommate had a phone reserved at a different AT&T store that he picked up from on the 24th.

Edit) Forgot to also mention that my roommate uses the phone without a case or screen cover, while I use an incipio silicrylic case and a wrapsol ultra screen cover.

This made no sense as to why it worked, but when I Reset Network Settings (Not reset all settings, but specifically the reset network settings) on the phone under the settings, general tab, it seemed to get rid of the proximity sensor issue. Now i seem to be able to hold it farther away, and the display stays inactive during phone calls. Again, it makes no sense as to why it fixed it, but I'd been having the problem since the 24th, and it seems to have fixed it, at least for the time being.

I agree that this is a problem that trumps the antenna "issue"

Mainly because if my signal is anything but crappy I have no antenna issue, but the prox sensor is acting like a finicky little pain in the ass.

At least we can be pretty sure that this bug IS software related.

I haven't made many phones calls until yesterday.

Wow is that sensor screwed up. Anytime I moved the phone a bit, either:

- Mute was hit
- Buttons were pushed
- worst end call was triggered.

What is the deal with all these bugs? It's like they did ZERO real world testing.

Oh wait, that's what us early adopters are for.

Define your reboot...removing of sim card, turn off and turn back on?

Or just simple turn off/turn on?

Thanks

Well actually it was a combo. I did a SIM card test today (which did nothing for the left seam), reset network settings which restarted the phone.

Last night I was putting the phone up to my ear and the screen was staying on longer than it should have. Last night I also did the SIM card test but forgot to reboot the phone and network settings. So if anything it was just the reboot and not the SIM card.

This iphone issue is one of the reasons I carry two cell phones with me most times.

I have Blackberry Bold 9700 (with Tmobile) and ATT (usually iPhone but I have other phones at my disposable since they are all unlocked).

At first, I thought it was just the new iphone 4 case I brought off ebay. But I used the phone "naked" which I rarely do and experienced proximity sensor issues. It would hit mute, speaker phone, buttons or end the call.

This happens if I only slightly adjust the phone when up against my check.

The weird thing is if I put my old iPhone 3Gs case and use it with the iPhone 4, I don't have any sensor issues. So the old case works great with the iPhone 4 even though it doesn't have the same cut out.

Needless to say, I carry my blackberry for a reason. I usually like make voice calls and text messages with my blackberry and I like to surf the web with my iPhone 4.

I still love my iPhone 4 even with it's issues.

Aughhh, same issue. I have already hung up one one person and kept putting my mechanic on speaker phone while trying to talk at work.

I should have known not to get the first release. I'm sure the phones that are going to be made in a few months will have fixes for the problems were finding.

Why don't you guys just exchange the phone for a working one? It's obviously got a problem as there are many people whose phone is working fine in that regard.

The antenna issue (while I think is being overblown) is being so hyped up because it's a design issue with all the phones (just if it shows up depends on the conditions you are in and how you like to hold the phone so some people are more affected by it than others). You can't just exchange the phone and fix the problem (unlike the problem you guys are complaining about. Which, I agree, is a helluva lot more annoying than the antenna issue. But you could easily solve it by exchanging your phone).

I agree about this. I'm not sure if this issue is bigger than the antenna issue, but I was on a business call yesterday, and it randomly tried (twice) to initiate a facetime call.

I think it's software related. I have had 3 phones total (2 replacements) sometimes it acts up and sometimes it's fine. A reboot seems to have cleared it up for me.

Some sensors may be bad, but I think the majority are experiencing a software bug.

It seems like half the time I'm hitting the FaceTime or speakerphone button, both of which all of a sudden broadcast what the other party is saying. Thank goodness I wasn't calling any 900 numbers.

My boyfriend's phone is having this problem as well. Mine isn't even though they were purchased from the same place from the same shipment. Anyhow, I am trying to convince him to reset his phone. I think he's worried about losing all of his contacts and such. I haven't had to reset a phone yet. Do you get the option to restore from back up or do a clean restore and perhaps save your back up elsewhere to keep from having the long process of re-entering data?

I am just really frustrated because his phone was a gift. And I really want him to love his as much as I love mine. And I'm a little worried to take his phone back because it doesn't have the reception issue. I'd hate for his to go from one problem to the next.

You already have the fix. Don't press the phone against your cheeck. It's really not hard to do.
I agree with the poster below you. Why should any of us have to change the way we hold the phone to comfortably talk, just because the sensor is not working properly. I never had this problem with the original iphone, 3g, or 3gs, so it blows me away that the 4th generation of this phone has an issue with it. The signal issues, I can recreate, but I have never dropped a call because of it, so that doesnt bother me. I always expect issues being an early adopter of new technology, but the fact that apple hasnt even acknowledged this issue yet irritates the heck out of me.

Happened to me yesterday, I noticed some calls were ended or the keypad was constantly being pressed with my cheek yesterday.
