I have resolved two issues since receiving my iP4, I put it in a case which has resolved signal attenuation. I also restored to factory and started fresh to resolve proximity sensor issues.

I realize these are problematic solutions for many, but they have been effective for me.

Yes I was also able to do a "restore" to a new phone last night and my issues with the proximity sensor went away. Or at least they have not been a problem today. I will continue to monitor, but this is a good sign!!!

This is probably the reason behind most dropped calls people are reporting. :)

It's such a shame since it is so much better than my old 3G one.

You are spot on. I've had several calls where i put someone on hold and was like, HELLO HELLO... then thinking call dropped, but in reality i was hung up on :(

i have the problem.... kept hitting mute but didn't realize it... thought we were dropping calls... UGH.... SO annoyed with apple

Well as a member since 2008 who only posts when I have something relevant or positive to say I kinda enjoy the energy, excitement and information that the newbies bring to this forum. You were a newbie once.

I just dont understand the people here that just read post looking for the chance to make a smart remark.

If you are not interested in the tread just move on to the next. " Dont be a D*** " :apple:

+1

I love this board but there are some of pickiest people just looking to jump on someone about anything they say or do wrong.
Thread Police are some of the worst, you'd think they were personally getting charged for every new thread.

The antenna issue is not a problem for me, I have tried to replicate it numerous times with no result.

My problem is with the proximity sensor. There arent as many people complaining about it, but I think its a pretty serious issue. I was on the phone with my girlfriend last night, and I must have hung up on her or pushed buttons at least over 5 times.

if apples were to address an issue I think that one in particular should be first priority. I fear the moment I am on an important call and my cheek hangs up the phone. It has nothing to do with my positioning either because it happens constantly.

Bingo I just noticed this yesterday. You are right.

So the number of "issues" is really starting to add up for me on the iPhone 4.

I find the sensor to be less sensitive then my 3G but still works fine. If you make a call and cover the area to the right of the earpiece, opposite of the front camera, with your finger does the screen turn off? I just have to press the phone a little closer to engage the proximity sensor on the 4 compared to the 3G.

Ditto on this issue. Got a replacement number from Apple, and am sending off my phone tonight for them to send a new one (hopefully with no proximity sensor problems).

I use my phone while travelling for work a lot, and in just a few days time my cheek hung up on a number of calls accidentally, managed to dial numbers, tried to activate facetime, and attempted to conference in someone else to the call.

Interestingly the screen turned off when it was near my face, I could always see the screen come back on when I pulled it away from my face to see what had happened to the call.

I've read several times that a database reset fixes this problem. Can you guys try it and see if it works?

Settings- General- Reset- Reset All Settings

I did this after I restored (always do)and have had no problems at all w/the sensor, and a few others claim to have done this and it fixed the problem. Takes a minute, you'll just have to readjust your email intervals, ringtones, etc. when its done.

Tried it, didn't fix it for me. Very frustrating.

This problem isn't as bad because its likely a software issue or at worst a production issue. But its probably not a hardware design issue like the antenna problem.

If the problem is temporarily rectified by a reboot or restore then it is clearly a software issue. If nothing works then it could be a bad sensor.

I was blaming it on my superior facial bone structure. In the words of our fearless leader, "It's a non issue." and "You are holding it wrong."

Actually, I think his skinniness would say "Not an issue, lose some weight fathead."

Let me speak for the Apple fans.

"You are holding the phone up to your face wrong"

"It's not the proximity sensor, it's the software"

"Put a bumper on it (they solve everything, including future wars between nations"

"Get a different phone because Apple doesn't make mistakes"

"Your face is broken and it is causing the phone to hang up automatically"

"ONLY you have this problem since I can't get it to do the same thing"

I have only encountered this problem twice or so since I have gotten the phone, so it is not that big of an issue for me compared to the reception problem, but I hope they fix the problem for everyone. :)

Here's the Deal

Ok, I purposely hold my phone away from my cheek that way the screen doesn't get face residue. It's the same thing as the finger smudges only your cheek would put an even bigger smudge on the screen. If you hold it away to begin with you might end up with a cleaner screeen. It would take a little retraining but I had to work with my wife on this as her makup would always cover her screen.

OK.... so today instead of doing the mute button thing.... i activated facetime while on a call.... it went to speaker and when i looked at the phone it was trying to activate a facetime call.... UGH!

so i finally gave in and got back on the phone with apple... after 30 minutes with a regular, inital answerer... i got transferred to a senior advisor who set me up for a replacement...

the bad news is there are no replacements for me until july 23!!! the good news is, he did waive the $29 fee....

so hopefully by waiting it will not only fix my proximity issue... but the antenna issue too (and that's about the time power support comes out with their screen protectors! WOOT!

Or how about this?

The proximity sensor is definitely something I wouldn't tolerate not working cause that would 100% of time affect my calls and there isn't anything easy I could do to avoid the problem. The proximity sensor not working would get very annoying very quickly. Enough I'd say it wasn't workable as a phone. I'm really surprised people have these phones with the proximity sensor and haven't exchanged them (or seen if there is a fix).

Yet the antenna problem even if I want to go naked it's simple enough for me to adjust my hold or train myself to hold it differently so it's not that big a deal. If the problem was bad enough it makes me drop calls. Which it doesn't. In fact it's been said that the phone tends to get better reception or at least be better able to use weaker signal (but you have to avoid that corner). So the design actually has some advantages. The antenna problem is far overhyped imho (and I agree it's there and it is a design thing. I think if they do a fix with software it's probably just a fix that helps make it more able to deal with the design).
