Does anyone really care what Ive says anymore? What has he really done over the last decade that has had any significant effect on tech or consumers of tech?

Reveling in past glories does not translate to much more than displays of ego.

You all are forgetting what amazing ideas a highly motivated Jony Ive can spit out and are too focused on the past few designs that came while he was in the leadership but highly demotivated and frustrated with what was becoming of the company for which he was so dedicated to give everything he had in him. He said himself that once you're frustrated, your imagination and vision become unclear. He had to fight with accountants and people who's opinion really shouldn't matter. You don't know half the things he had to go though and what of the decision were actually he's, so please, chill. He's a great designer, and Apple wouldn't be here without his blueprints.

"I actually think that something that I feel conscious of is that I think generally in the valley and generally in our... industry, I think joy in humans has been missing. And the products that we're all developing, they're complicated, aren't they? And sometimes joy gets confused with being trivial."

That's why Apple needs him back. Their products no longer invoke joy--they are soulless gadgets.
The last thing Apple needs is Ive's return. He is as out of touch as gets.

No one has forgotten. We are just not living in past or worshipping in the present based on past accomplishments.

He gets huge acknowledgement for his contributions in the past. ButWhat has he done lately? Nothing.

Steve Jobs made Jony Ive focus solely on industrial design. Tim Cook actively encouraged Ive to lose focus, first by firing Apple’s most Jobs-like employee, Scott Forstall, and handing over Forstall’s GUI design work to Ive. Ive had no experience and no in-depth knowledge of GUI design. In addition, Cook wanted Ive to work on the interior design of Apple’s spaceship campus. All of that took focus away from what Ive was actually skilled at, which was industrial design.

Even with industrial design, while Jobs was able to manage by keeping Ive’s worst tendencies in check, Cook failed to do that.

Cook’s main skill is making astronomical amounts of money, and he knows an effective way to do that is to not care about product quality, cut corners, and give customers as little as he can get away with for their money. It benefits shareholders, but is not good for customers.

“Even if you're innocent in your intention, if you're involved in something that has poor consequences, you need to own it.”

Will be interesting to see how this collides with all the negative consequences that Open AI will foster.

I love what Ive is saying here, but let's not completely ignore that it was Ive that oversaw Apple's move from skeuomorphic design to the current "flat" design in iOS7 - the single most joyless UX change the company has ever had.

Sure, they went for simplicity and cleanliness, but they also sucked out all the joy and broke many useful human interface guidelines in a move that screamed style over substance.
I was glad Apple got away from 2000’s era cartoon graphics, Corinthian leather contact books and green felt.

The first sentence I wrote is clearly an opinion. After the opening sentence, my comment was quite clear in acknowledging his past accomplishments and positive impact. But with respect to the rest, perhaps you could tell us what he has done lately that has had any impact. I would be glad to reconsider my view upon presentation of a well researched assessment and conclusion regarding his more recent accomplishments.

He left the company years ago and we still haven’t gotten out of “iOS 7” phase smh. This is getting boring.

Skeuomorphism had its haters, sure. But it had soul, was very easy on eyes and there was less white colors in iOS so it never required “dark mode”.

But gotta be honest:
WHO except Jony Ive actually hated skeuomorphism??? I mean real hatred, not constructive criticism. Is there a single sane person?? Or just a bunch of lazy designers who have no imagination🤨

I haven't been following him closely and thus have no information, and therefore have no opinion. The purpose of my post was to better understand your assessment that Ive has done nothing lately.

I did very much enjoy his interview and sharing his years of insight and self reflection.

You got that bit wrong. It's Jony who wanted to do that. Ironically, you see it as a distraction but it may have had and will continue to have a far larger impact than you imagine. Ultimately I believe it was some of the negative impacts the success of the smartphone had which soured Ive's apple. That and no Steve. And for sure, he's no software guy.
