If FB was gone tomorrow would anyone care? Corporate diligence would rise from the lack of time wasted on FB so I think we should test the theory and shut it down for a year and see how we do.. we may even be able to get some bandwidth back on the internet.

There is no guarantee that most users won't allow personalized ad-tracking. Most people simply don't care about whether they're ad-tracked or not. It's a fact that most people don't care if Facebook uses their personal data and shares it with anyone who is willing to pay for it. People love Facebook and don't mind what's used as long as they can continue using Facebook social media without having to pay actual money for it. I don't use Facebook or any other social media but I'm definitely in the minority. Apple is going to try to inform people about Facebook's personalized ad-tracking, but it's not going to work. Facebook will be worth even more after these iOS changes take place. Facebook will continue to climb in value no matter what Apple does to try to stop it. Zuckerberg is simply trying to help his company make as much money as possible and that's why Facebook is so highly respected on Wall Street. Big investors love Zuckerberg.
Not to be entirely off-topic BUT: Millions believe that the last election was STOLEN...against all reason. THIS will work in FB s favor....they know their audience.

Talked to my GF on the phone about earwax, and all the sudden I get earwax ads on facebook.

Creepy af.
Which reminds me I’m doing earwax cleaning while watching YouTube, and now almost every single ad displayed on the right side of the video is about earwax removal. Google certainly gains access of my iPad camera and using it to push ads, because I dont search earwax removal on Google at all.

I knew Zuck was a Flowbee kind of guy!!!

Facebook needs a ton of stuff to clean up - and that may include their Login with Facebook methods too. Don't be surprised if all of a sudden, Facebook logins start to disappear if FB doesn't get this stuff straight.
I hope so.

How do? Never had an account.
Facebook contracts out with OTHER websites; businesses; advertisers; retailers; millions of them. And those same companies pay big money to use FB services for their advertising, data collection (of all sorts). FB IS their advertising firm! So even if you do not use or visit FB, they DO have info on YOU. Just like when you visit all your favorite websites, they are being on hosted on big company platforms such as AWS (Amazon Web Services) or AZURE (Microsoft cloud-based web services). Do you use Google? Youtube? Doesn't matter. There is a ton of info all these companies have on you just because of your internet presence.

Investors in growth funds would, since Facebook is still a common top 10 holding in most growth focused mutual funds in the U.S.

Still think it would be worth it, though... ;)

How about with NO TRACKING!

Agreed. If all these sites and apps would stop tracking and clogging my browser with obnoxious ads with sound or scrolling or flashing or popping up that act like viruses, I’d drop the ad blockers as I don’t actually mind ads that are set into the page like newspaper ads. And they don’t need to track me, just sponsor the sites that match up with whatever business they’re in.

How many people here are still actively using Facebook? I've found myself looking at it less & less. So these changes are not even going to remotely impact my use of Facebook. It's like a fart in the wind. On Saturn.
+1 here. I naturally somehow shifted away from Facebook/Twitter/Co over the last 4 years, still using messenger/WhatsApp with those that refuse to use signal or iMessages (even with an iPhone in their hands). And the more the cancel culture, tracking, whack news and turmoil breeds in there the more I’ll stay away.
Gotta say though, maybe once every several months someone sends a FB link and I definitely see that link and a bit more, it’s that good at pulling attention.

On the prompt topic, I guess the wording will end up being “do you want free stuff or not?”, to which I’ll also say, no free stuff for me, thanks... will pay if needed and not be tracked.

Grandparents love FaceBook. Their children post the grand-babies on FB and grandma and grandpa lap it up. I tell my wife FB is evil but she just stares at me. LOL
Lol unfortunately that’s true. I left FB a few years ago and now I don’t know what the heck my niece’s youngest kids look like. It’s going to be a shock seeing them in person when Covid restrictions are over.

Oh and our kids’ school’s parent association runs on FB. That really sucks. It’s hard for me to keep track of events because they conduct all their business and on FB and just assume everyone has a FB account or is willing to sign up for one. That’s fine. I’m getting too old for this stuff.

Will Android follow Apple, so Apple couldn't boast that they are better on privacy? Or will they resist, to protect Google's targeted-advertising profits?

Google lives and dies by ad revenue. They will always find a way around whatever policies Apple puts in place.
Ad companies like MediaVine are already testing new methods of tracking behavior across web sites without the use of cookies.
Worse case scenario is a lot of those "free" sites will become "fee" sites or go to a subscription model where you have to agree to share some data to access the full site.
Many sites depend on ad revenue to stay up and running.

Facebook needs to stay in their lane. I despise how they imbed themselves into everything outside of their own site. Leave me alone FB!

Facebook only cares about its own bottom line. No one believes they are fighting for the little guy
As is every companies responsibility is to care about the bottom line. Facebook care about their bottom line using advertising amongst other things. Apple claims to care about privacy because it helps their bottom line, e.g. consumers believe that and buy into their ecosytem. Trust me, no company cares about the little guy at the expense of their bottom line.

Think bigger...how about NO ADVERTISING ANYWHERE, period.
Think no advertising...essentially no internet and no “free” services on platforms, everyone paying directly for everything, no websites to visit, no Mac rumours to declare your unwavering love for all things Apple, no where to complain about everyone else...advertising is the fuel of the internet. Do you pay to visit Mac Rumours, no, the advertisers pay so you can visit.

Free yourself and delete your account. Its liberating. You may have FOMO for a fee days, before realising the only things you are missing out on are stupid memes and micro drama.

On a personal level I don’t really like or use Facebook much, and that’s the last place I would share personal things or photos from my kids. But many small businesses and non-profit organisations heavily rely on it to reach out to their user base. I know many local restaurants that do not have a website but exclusively communicate through Facebook. I manage a local sports club and much our communication goes through Facebook (and Instagram!), which is by far the most efficient way to connect with our members.

Facebook is very aggressive at getting peoples contact lists when they use the Facebook App on their phone.
I assure you, at least one of your contacts has uploaded all your contact details to Facebook, that means Facebook has a very detailed picture of your social network - the neighborhood you live in, people you interact with on a regular basis (where, when, how often), etc.
Combine that with sophisticated tracking and it is a piece of cake to match your internet behavior to your shadow profile on Facebook.

Facebook took the wrong approach on this. Instead of making it a very publicize issue they should have negotiated an annual payment with Apple to not implement this. The same way Google pay Apple billions to be the search engine.

Now it's so public that Apple could not backtrack without loosing face.
That is no way the same thing.

The equivalent would be more like Facebook paying Apple to make sure that Facebook was the default webpage when opening a new tab.

.

Less ad tracking data will prevent Facebook and its clients from targeting ads as effectively as they can now, but a lot of businesses may not need much data for effective ad targeting. A small coffee shop in Texas, for example, likely uses broad targeting categories like zip code and age range for ads, which is data that Facebook can collect from its own apps without the need for the IDFA.

If I want to drink coffee ☕️ I know where the small coffee shops are in my hood 🏠

If I am travelling and want a coffee the damn coffee chains are all over the place in my face.

I don’t need an ad to know where to buy a coffee.

I don’t need to be tracked and have data collection to know where to buy a coffee.

I am a human with circa 25 senses and I know:

1 how to spot a coffee shop

2 go inside coffee shop

3 ask for coffee

4 pay for the coffee

5 drink the coffee

I don’t need give Zuckerberg data to do those things that people have been doing for hundreds of years.

The coffee shop only has to serve damn good coffee and everyone will go there and they don’t need to buy ads.

Mr Pink what do you think:

I’ve seen how some VC backed startups use consumer data and in many cases it’s somewhere between unethical and criminal. Let’s face the facts. Many of the startups are under a tremendous pressure to gain market share or meet whatever target the investors have set. Therefore, many startups use every possible way to reach their target audience. They use the tools but don’t ask if it’s ethical or even legal. In all honesty, many of highest value startups have been known to operate avoiding taxes etc. responsibilities, some even outright breaking the law. So, tracking consumers is somewhat in their DNA. Hell, Suckerberg is inspiration to many of those guys anyway...
