Zion National Park

Great shot. Love how the b&w really make the different colours in the layers of rock stand out. There's a bit of halo between the ridge lines and the sky- is that natural?

I thought I'd share this scene I came upon while wandering the streets of Žilina. It was a powerful sight with this statue overlooking the square below with a mini-futbol game in play. Critiques welcome.

This one is a bit older, but I'm really proud of how it turned out. I originally shot it on my Yashica 35 GSN on Velvia 100F while waiting for the Miyajima ferry to take us back to mainland Japan. I converted it to B&W using Silver Efex 2. I can't get enough of how awesome photos turn out using that program! You can control everything you want on it.

The original, in colour, is available on my Flickr, if you're at all interested.

Very interesting photos, Dale. The depth of field used for the shells is just right, and the framing is also good to capture the shadow and surrounding areas. Here is my latest B&W taken last month while on a road trip through New Mexico... there was a huge storm system that stretched from Canada to Mexico, and we were right at the edge of it. Shiprock (the large volcanic formation shown below) is visible from quite some distance. This is currently my desktop background:

Shiprock
1/250s, 24mm, f/8, ISO 100
Canon Rebel T2i + 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
B&W processed with Topaz Adjust
Excellent framing. I love the rich feeling of the sky.

Nice use of line in this photo. The curved lines keep your eye moving.

Nice details and textures. I'm not really sure about the cropping of the white rope at the top right. I want to either see more or less of it.

Here is another from the same trip:

Canon Rebel T2i + 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM

Love the details here. Good use of a wide angle lens.

I'm really a sucker for the way that B&W renders landscapes and details that might be lost in color. All of these are great examples of black and white photography.

Mine.

I plan to reshoot this with better light if it ever shows up. Winter is here in the great NW.

Great idea for the photo. I'd put forth that if there was an angle that made the statue seem even larger and more dominant like it was really watching over the whole seen then that would make it even more interesting.

I like the architecture and the lines and agree it needs more dynamic light and maybe a few clouds. Is it lit up at night?

Dale, thank you for the kind comments. Here's another one:

Great clouds and I like the composition a lot. It's a beautiful mountain. I like this one more than the Zion one.

Tried something different. Not sure that I'm happy with the pic or the post processing.

Wow, kudos from Dale and JD-you guys made my day (err, night here in the wild west). JD, I like this pic with PP. I like sharpness and structure that is present. It works for me, FWIW

I love this shot! Although, I do kind of wish the pass there had a bit more contrast/definition to better separate it from the background. That would make it absolutely perfect.

Thanks for the kind comments, they're definitely appreciated! That's the whole photo, unfortunately – uncropped. I didn't notice it earlier, but you're right, the rope does seem a bit unfinished.

Here's another one from me, this one much more recent. This is the violinist from Hey Rosetta!, a heart-exploding indie pop band from Newfoundland. I took it at their show on Monday here in Calgary. Ran it through Silver Efex Pro 2, picked the Kodak 400 TMax Pro setting and took it from there.

Lone hiker in foggy weather.
My favourite subject to convert to b/w. If that's even necessary, since the
original also has almost no colour in it. I admit it's an older one, but it matches the challenge. (and I like it)
Perhaps more of the same, after this weekend ( promises are foggy weather!)

B&W really helps to create a mood in this picture! I really like the way it is framed, with the person walking off into the mist and the leading line of the road. makes you wonder what's up ahead. Nicely done.

I finally had a chance to get something in here. With autumn colors peaking, B&W is not on my mind right now. :) This was taken before the colors were strong enough to stand out, so B&W seemed more appropriate.

This is totally the kind of image well suited for B&W. I love all the detail and texture that pops up with the conversion.

Thanks for the comments! The first I've received other than the weekly challenge. I hear what you're saying- Being that the statue was about 20 metres over the square, and the hills rising in the background, my instinct was to have the statue in the lower left corner with the scene behind rising up. I'll play with some different angles and statue sizes. Thanks again! I'm very much humbled by that talent within this forum. Someday soon I'll have a camera to shoot with other than my pocket-able cannon.

Mine for today:

Too many really nice images here to comment on right now... When I get back on my laptop I'll take a stab at some feedback, but for now I'll post this... part of my peripheral observations of the cyclocross culture here in Oregon.

Thanks Dale... I've drifted away awhile, but I'm never really gone. Too much good stuff here and good people. My photography has been pretty limited for some time in subject matter, and I haven't had much to offer, but I'll try to participate a bit more in the future again. Cheers. :)
