burst traffic is hard to handle on the forums.

Obviously if traffic sustains at high levels, we can add another server, but it's not realistic to do that if this is a once or twice a day every year sort of phenomenon.

Eh...bring some old servers out of the closet and hook them up when a Stevenote's coming up. :D

This Stevenote was a lot bigger then any before it as the big Intel news was announced so I doubt the traffic will ever be as big as it was today for a long time.

I would donate my G5 processor cycles if that's remotely possible to do.

Maybe something similar to TOR or onion routing so the load can be balanced across many machines. Don't know if such a system exists.

Here's to the Crazy Ones

I would be interested to see the new member numbers of how many people joined up today. Could it be a record sign up day?

Hmmm... distributed forum hosting among all members' computers. Limeforum?

102 new users so far today...I have no idea whether that's a record or not.

nah.... the registrations were probably throttled by the Busy messages.

Apple does maybe 3-4 major releases a year which causes heavy forum traffic the night before, the day of, and the day after that release. Just seems like it would be useful to beef up the servers, because they are ALWAYS down during an event like today.

Do you think Steve Jobs was advertising "Mac Rumors" by mentioning "Apple Rumors"? ;) :D
I thought the same thing while I was watching the Keynote. I wonder how often he frequents this site, or which member he's disguised as. :p

He is not disguised at all, but he doesn't post much.

So maybe time for a server upgrade? Its been a bitch trying to get on here all day with all the "Server busy" warnings.

Yes, I sat through a long period of server busy message for a long while after the MRLIVE coverage. Would the peak have been higher but for the busy messages or does the number count everyone who could get to the front page but not the forums? I really enjoyed the coverage (very little work was accomplished during that period), btw thanks to everyone who made it possible.

I have no idea if this is anyway possible, but it sounds like a good idea - count me in if you ever decide to investigate this.

Arn, is it not possible to breakdown the "Most users ever online was 5,890, Yesterday at 08:56 PM" into how many members and how many guests..... would be interesting to see the record no. of members on board at any one time.
