I have a late 2016 Macbook Pro with a stock 256GB SSD that is causing kernel panics when the SSD is under high load and heats up. I bought the 256GB Hynix BC511 and the NFHK adaptor (the one with the cutout). My Mac boots up properly (no question mark issues). However, computer sleep is not working properly. When I press a key to wake up the computer a kernel panic occurs.

I installed Bootcamp + Windows 10 on the Hynix and sleep when running Windows works properly.

My guess is that either the Hynix BC511 or the NFHK adaptor is not 100% compatible with the 2016 Macbook Pro. I've read elsewhere that some original Apple SSDs are only compatible with 2017 Macbook Pro models.

Has someone tried to install NVMEFix (https://github.com/acidanthera/NVMeFix) with a Sabrent Rocket SSD drive? I have problems with battery drain when disconnected from power cord and the Macbook is suspended. It would be nice if someone has good results with that.

I just did it now ! A1708 + 1To Sabrent SSD + Adaptor, by following this guide.

I was losting ~20% of battery charge over night. Right now my fans seems quieter, I'll let you know about my battery life on idle as soon as I can do some test.

EDIT : got a ~10% drain last night. Seems a bit better but my battery seems to still get drain a bit quickly sometimes

Which method did you use @mmmgl ? I tried terminal method to install Lilu, but without repairing permissions, with no success. Did you have to compile NVMeFix to generate the kext? On Github repository I couldn't find the link to download the kext. Thank you!

I used the hackintool method after backing up, everything went fine. Just be sure to install the last versions of LiLu and NVMEFix !

Hello, I read all 14 pages of this topic and I am thinking about upgrading my ssd. The best solution for upgrading seems to be Hynix BC511 and NFHK adapter. Am I right? If I am not, what is the best combination? And about the ssd, is there some difference between 2230 and 2242 version of the ssd?
This ssd is really hard to find. I am from Czech Republic and currently couldn't find any seller. Do you have some advices?
And I have to thank all of you guys for testing and finding out the best solution.

Hi, guys I'm new here and I've tried to read whole discussion but its too much for me so... anyways I bought ssd adapter for my Macbook Pro 2017 A1708 and samsung PM991 NVMe. Everything works fine, but after installing (or more like trying to install MacOs) macbook restarts showing Kernel Panic Error and all progress is lost. I've tried hard reseting, using different drive, formating drives to different formats, installing Big Sur and Catalina, even cloning system from original drive to> external drive to> new samsung, but I always end up with the same error. Its probably drive thats some what faulty but maybe some of you have other suggestions.

Hi guys, after struggling with all the trial, i've finally made it running smoothly and solve the ac plug start issue.
here's the update for you guys,

1. Adaptor: NFHK, V6
2. SSD: Hynix BC511 PCIe Nvme 2230, 512gb
3. Model: Macbook Pro 13" A1708,256gb None touch bar 2017
4. Boot rom (system firmware version: 429.80.1.0.0

Originally i was using the WD, SN530 PCIe Nvme 2230, 512gb. installed and back up under the previous Mac OS, Big Sur 11.2.3 20D91 ver. (Nvmefix.kext was also installed under the path ~/library/extensions)
Everything running smooth, fast, but the heat problem keeps bothering me, and the AC/cord plugin start up issue
question mark folder appeared with support.apple.com/mac/startup - it seemed that the adaptor was detected as the portable drive or something...
after automatically update to Mac OS, Big Sur 11.3 from App store, suddenly it seems the heating problem solved.
i've also installed the SMC fan control, any of them seems working okie at least you can custom control the fan speed.
and for the AC/cord start up issue, i've disable the auto-boot function by using the terminal with the code as following.
to disable : open terminal, paste "sudo nvram AutoBoot=%00"
to Enable : open terminal, paste "sudo nvram AutoBoot=%03"
it works pretty fine with all these setting, no sleeping awake issue, only main issue is AC/cord plugin start up

To enhance more about the stability and 100% replaceable SSD upgrade, i purchased the Hynix BC551 PCIe Nvme 2230 512gb SSD. same steps, time machine back up the the updated Mac OS Big Sur 11.3, installed the SSD.
run the installation a brand new Mac OS Big Sur 11.3, then using the Migration assistant to replace back all the data.
it's working like charm. no AC/cord plugin start up issue, heating issue is also acceptable, running with around 35-45 °C
but one thing i notice, what does the trick is the Phison controller, during the brand new OS installation, it popped out the "Phison driver"(assuming it's the SSD controller to interact with Mac SMC) installation window (which is not happening on the previous SSD installation, assuming the WD, SN530 is using the incompatible controller to what Mac can recognize)

what i notice, is that the "NVMexperess Device Tree" appears "Generic SSD Controller, which didn't appear on the previous WD, SN530 SSD. This Generric SSD Controller can be high percentage related to "Phison driver"
i'm a daily user, not IT, so this is just to save some buck and enjoy the upgrade process.
hope this help out someone who needs

Updates,
after trying for few days, still can see that battery draining after the 3rd party ssd, so i've worked on some tunes to fix this issue, there's 1 significant answer, "SsdPmEnabler"
it's a kext file that will enhance the battery drain issue. i've installed it following the website. let's see if it can do the trick. will update after few days trial for battery draining issue. following is the website from github,

Hi everyone! This is my first message in this thread, so be kind)
Week ago I tried Sabrent 1Tb Rocket Nano and had all the issues mentioned here: startup failure with question mark folder, battery drain in sleep and extremely poor autonomous life - my MBP ran out of battery in 3 hours.
The guy who helped me to install all this suggested that there is better variant of SSD - Netac N930ES SSD 1000GB (NT01N930ES-001T-E2X). Got no clue what Netac is, but gave it a try.
So now my setup is: NFHK Adapter (V6, with cutouts) and Netac SSD. And it works much better than sabrent, even tho its x2, not x4. Writing/reading speed is about 1450/1700, no heating (feels like even less than with original Apple SSD), sleep issue was solved with terminal command mentioned here.
Only one problem still exists - poor battery life.
Does anybody know how to fix it? I've already tried resetting SMC, installed NVMe kexts.
I ordered another adapter - that one with resistors. Maybe it will help.
Thanx in advance!

I installed SSDPMEnabler yesterday. Left my MacBook unplugged overnight and it dropped 10%. The repo doesn't say it supports the A1708 but it installed fine and I think the overnight power drain has improved.

it's a kext file that will enhance the battery drain issue. i've installed it following the website. let's see if it can do the trick. will update after few days trial for battery draining issue. following is the website from github,

update,
after 2 days trials, working with the computer after 100% full battery life, i experienced around estimated 5hrs operating time, including downloading, mails, using chrome for web browsing, messaging and etc. it will have around 20% battery left.
operating temperature is good, fan is not over exhausting (installed the Macs Fan control using with automatic) can refer the attached files for the working temp°. although SsdPmEnabler not showing A1708 is compatible, but it proves that it's working fine and have no issue with Big Sur 11.3

before SsdPmEnabler installed, i also suffer around 3.5-4 hrs battery life, temp° are similar but slightly higher can feel the uni-body is warm. besides that , i think it's perfectly replaced the original Mac SSD.

personal thought, Macbook is unlike the other PC laptop. it's chipset management is amazing. once replacing the SSD.
the SMC unit, the software, the Power management all need to tuned up and adjust according to the SSD.
different SSD is also having different PCIe controller, different compatibility.
without installing the 3rd party kext, and all tunneling. it would be hard to just plug and play to replace the SSD.
i didn't have the change to try the adapter with capacitors on it, perhaps it's more stable with PM controlling.
over controlling the SSD power, might also impact to the SSD performance. so it's give and take. gotta try with luck and do some readings while ready to have the SSD upgrade.

here's my "pmset due status", finding no hibernate error and sleeping issue.
nvmefix.kext, SsdPmEnabler.kext really does the job.

I don't have these HibernateError messages. "pmset -g log" doesn't have any errors which must be good.
I haven't installed the NVMeFix as I've got the Sabrent Rocket 2242 and the other posts here read like that NVMeFix doesn't work well with the Sabrent.
Here's my pmset:

Currently in use:
lidwake 0
autopoweroff 1
standbydelayhigh 1
autopoweroffdelay 259200
standbydelaylow 1
standby 0
proximitywake 0
ttyskeepawake 0
hibernatemode 25
gpuswitch 2
powernap 0
hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage
highstandbythreshold 50
displaysleep 2
sleep 0
acwake 0
halfdim 1
tcpkeepalive 1
disksleep 0

It’s working for mine with Sabrent Rocket Nano 1tb

EDIT :

After running this command in Terminal : pmset -g log | grep "due"

Hi guys,
Thank you all for your valuable input in regard to the upgrade matter.

As many of you have concluded, the NFHK and the SK Hynix 2230 is the best working solution (if I haven't misunderstood), however the Hynix is very rare and difficult to find. When finding (Amazon, eBay etc) the price is very high let alone the SSD is pre-owned/used and all of a sudden this solution is not as cost-effective.
My question would be: has anyone tried any other SSD with the NFHK?
Is there any other SSD that you'd recommend? I'm looking for 2242 with DRAM for better heat dissipation and speeds!

Appreciate your input!

Hi , SK Hynix is rare for sure, for the others, you might need to find whether the controller is compatible with Mac.
as i noticed earlier, Phison controller is compatible with A1708, so perhaps if the SSD is running with Phison controller, it might not having AC cord plugin start up issue, and hibernate issue.

Hello!

This is my first post on the forum. I bought used MacBook Pro 13' 128 GB about a year ago. I thought that 128 GB will be plenty for college work, but oh boy I was wrong. I have 20 GB left and I'm planning to replace my SSD.

I read that whole thread, and made purchases.

Adaptor: NFHK
SSD: SK Hynix BC511, 2230, 512 GB.

I still have some questions (they might be stupid because I know next to nothing about IT).

Can I replace the drive without making a bootable MacOS image? I saw on one of YT videos that a guy simply reinstalled MacOS from internet during setup after replacing the drive. Is it okay? It seemed the simplest to me.

So my plan of action looks like this:

- Copy all my files from Mac to external HDD drive
- Open up my Mac, disconnect the battery and remove SSD
- Mount new SSD
- Close up everything
- Boot up Mac
- Open Disc Utility from menu, erase the new SSD
- Click Reinstall MacOS, and proceed the installation
- Move all copied files back onto Mac

Am I thinking right?

Cheers!

BTW I'm on Big Sur 11.3.1

I still have some questions (they might be stupid because I know next to nothing about IT).

well if all the Ssd data are important you should use the time machine to back up, mine is for business purpose so i use the time machine to back up some use the carbon copy the entire ssd into the new one, for more secure issue, time machine is still the best choice.
i use the USB bootable disk to boot up and run the disk utility then use the back up restore from time machine to restore all. else u can just install the brand new OS then run the migration assistant to migrate back from your time machine backup

both way are workable for me i am using it daily no issues.
installing directly from internet is also fine theologically but it takes much longer time consuming then installing the new OS.
since u have already taken part worth trying ur own method. Good luck

Thanks for the response!

And to be completely clear, If something goes wrong I can always pop out that new SSD, insert old one, and everything will be up and running right?

yes indeed as long as you don't format the original one,

That’s great. I’m waiting for the adaptor.

If anything goes wrong, I’m willing to sell that “rare” Hynix 512GB SSD. That was a bargain, I paid around 60 bucks for it, when Sabrent one would cost me 95!
