And I thought that my suggestion would help because the last time I downloaded it a couple months ago I thought I saw it said PC/Linux/Mac compatible.
You seem to be fixated on the version issue. That's not it.
  • You did NOT download this same software... in ANY version, or you would be infected, getting constant redirects to porn sites.
  • You don't need antivirus of any kind to protect your Mac from malware. You DO need to be aware of what malware does and how to avoid it.
  • You should never use any antivirus to even scan your computer, unless you've first checked it out and done some research to make sure it's legit.
  • You should never install software that automatically downloads to your computer. Always actively go get software from a reputable site and proactively download and install it. Don't react to anything that just "pops up", wanting you to install it, unless you're certain of the source and you know what you're doing.

I don't understand how you can make a statement like this, relieving yourself of any responsibility of doing due diligence before making a post, simply because of your age. If we are to take this at face value, then any future posts containing suggestions you make should be discounted because you stated that you may or may not have done even the most cursory research on what you're suggesting. If you want to be a responsible member of this community then you have to act responsibly. Act responsibly and then respect will follow.

According to your sig, at this point you don't even have a Mac, but that you want one. That's great. If you have any questions about the OSX/MBP experience or about specs/problems/software, etc, then this is exactly the place to be. Post those questions and they will be answered. I guarantee that. React the way you have on this thread and you might find a different response.

I don't really see how any of the responses from the guys that pointed out your error were hostile or mean spirited, but your reactions certainly were. You should be aware of something else. From time to time we see spam posts from brand new accounts which contain links which might redirect somewhere else than the link might describe.

Your post looked just like one of these. We report them to the forum mods and those accounts are usually banned pretty quickly.

My advice to you, which you can freely toss out with the nearest airlock, is to calm down and think before you post. I have it on good authority that 14 year old people all over the world are able to take responsibility for their actions and not use their age as an excuse to be irresponsible.

And as I keep responding to all the comments regarding my attempt to be helpful...I was trying to help. Just like you're trying to help me. And like I said, the first response didn't have to be someone throwing links at me to read up on how Mac's don't get viruses. I simply was suggesting something I tried that worked for me. And as I even said in the comment in question, TRY THIS IF YOU WANT, IT'S UNNECESSARY, BUT SAFETY COMES FIRST, RIGHT? Obviously not in those exact words, but that's what I implied. I think this discussion is over and you all can stop going on and on about how I was wrong and that I need to do research. Don't tell me I need to do research. I've done research.

Thanks, and because of this whole incident which could've been avoided, I'm quitting this forum as it's been no help to me except that when I try to help, I'm discouraged. Thanks for helping me realize that, this forum has lost a member because someone couldn't just respond simply by saying "thanks but no thanks". Goodbye.

Wow, you people are so damn stubborn. I DID DO RESEARCH ON THE DAMN SOFTWARE. I got a virus about 8 months ago.(IT LOOKED SIMILAR TO THE POPUP GIVEN IN THE PICTURE) I searched long and hard on how to fix it. Once I found this solution, KNOWN AS MALEWAREBYTES, I searched long and hard AGAIN to make sure people have used it and have agreed it works. I then uploaded a Youtube video explaining the help it gave and I got comments replying to the video saying that it helped them out as well. As you people told me to research, why don't you research every context you need to make silly ass responses like:
You should never use any antivirus to even scan your computer, unless you've first checked it out and done some research to make sure it's legit.
I'm perfectly capable of researching weather a software is good or not.

Next time ask me these as questions, not direct statements saying I'm wrong when clearly you don't know weather I did that or not.

That's what I was avoiding at the time. I kept getting pop-ups similar to this. I did know what I was doing, and I did know it was bad...

I was trying to help. Just like you're trying to help me.

Actually, I wasn't exactly trying to help you. I was trying to help the forum.

I think the technical term for this is the "I'm taking my ball and going home maneuver"

Was trying to think of something pithy to say about being in my 40s and being allowed to do something, but all I can come up with is making payments on stuff, holding down my job, paying taxes, going to various doctors, and maintaining the house. I think I like the 14 year old plan better.

I DID DO RESEARCH ON THE DAMN SOFTWARE.
But you didn't do research on the issue that the OP posted, or you wouldn't have suggested any scans by any software.

The other points I made were not just for you, but were general rules for anyone to follow.

For those of you who don't understand the point given in my reply...which is simply everyone...I was responding to this because I had a similar thing come up on my computer. And because none of you seem to get that through your judgmental skulls, Here's a picture dramatizing the situation I had...You will notice it is SIMILAR to what he experienced in his main posts' picture.

For the last ****ING time, I had a similar experience (as shown in the image I provided in a recent post) to what OP had. I fixed it using that software I suggested.

You all really have no brains to look at what I'm saying. I HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM, SO RESPONDED WITH MY FIX HOPING IT COULD HELP HIM IN SOME WAY. If you all are happy, I'm quite upset that all of you are against me when I was merely trying to help him. Because HE posted a thread. I WENT to the thread. I HAD A FLASHBACK TO A SIMILAR ISSUE, and I TRIED to help in any way I could...and the help that came out was my solution.

Malware experiences for Windows are significantly different from malware experiences for Mac. You can't assume the same solutions. I appreciate the fact that you thought you were helping, but since you don't own a Mac and have no Mac experience, you would do well to operate in a "learning mode" for a while before switching to a "helping mode". Read the forum, ask questions, read responses and read the resources that are posted. Then, with your new-found knowledge, you'll be equipped to truly help people.

lol ... this thread is becoming quite funny ... PC Kid tries to help out Mac user with imaginary Mac Virus by using PC anti virus software.

I thought you were leaving.

If my desktop looked like that screenshot I'd be extremely hostile after looking at it for a couple of hours.

From what I understand, those types of fake antivirus pop ups are usually found on warez or fake porn sites.

Since we're on the Mac Security/ Anti Virus topic.
A colleague at work ( in the IT networking department ) suggested that I download some form of Anti-virus for my MBP.
Should I take him seriously?

Actually, I have a lot of experience in the Mac department. I just don't OWN one yet. There is a difference. And just because they are different, doesn't mean I can't suggest something. If you can't see the damn image, you'll find that it asked me to resolve a "trojan". It is doing the same exact thing in his image. That's where I was coming from with the solution. You all are so thick headed and do not look at anything except your keyboards as you're typing something because you don't agree with a slight thing within a comment.

Example:

I like chocolate milk...you chould too

You shouldn't be telling people what to like or do. It's not very nice.

I was being sarcastic...

You were still enforcing people to do something you wanted to do.

It was chocolate milk, dude...

Learn on influential meanings before you say something like this again.

That's how stupid I feel this whole conversation is. Unnecessary and absolutely repulsive.

No.

At work, our parent company's internal audit division forces us to run AV on our Mac workstations. They've never caught anything and they sometimes cause their own issues. They've been up my ass for 3 years to run it on my Sun boxes and after 3 years of ignoring them I finally got them to give me an exception.

He may be saying this so you do not pass Windows viruses to other Windows machines at the office

Fake porn sites! Those exist. I feel so ripped off right now.

Should I take him seriously?

BTW, check out the links in my sig for more security suggestions.

EDIT: No, to typical AV software with on-access scanning. An AV software, such as ClamXav, that only has on-demand scanning has no downside so no reason not to run it every once in a while just for peace of mind.

Do the Mac AV applications also scan for Windows virus definitions? I've never actually had AV on one of my Macs so I'm not sure what that does.

That was what the Solaris thing was all about, but all my machines are database servers and users don't directly attach and there's no file sharing.

If you do not have top secret clearance in a governmental setting, he is most likely going to too many fake porn sites if he gave you that advice.

You know what I mean.. when you do a google for "Helen Mirren hot action" and all you get is popups and pictures of Grandpa Munster chugging bottles of port. I consider that to be fake porn. Real porn is when people take pictures of their cameras in dramatic lighting.

Wow, you all are horrendous. As I said, I am a Mac user, but I don't OWN one. I use one on a day to day basis. I know more about them then anyone in the damn school. Even my smart friend who can tell you anything about any subject. I'm not a "PC kid"...I'm a multi-universal computer user who was attempting to help with a UNIVERSAL AT THE TIME I USED IT software. All of you really need to read context before you go and saying ****. "I know this is quite funny..." It's not funny to the one being pounded at for trying to help. I'm being pelted with dodge balls because I brought the dodge balls so you all could play...is that very fair? Nope. I know a lot about Apple's security that is present on all Mac's. I know Snow Leopard is the most advanced operating system to date, incorporating one of the most safest in the world. I know this stuff, I just don't own this stuff yet. You all are saying the same exact thing...Do your research on Mac...When to tell you all for the hundredth time, I have. I know about Mac's. I don't get what you people don't understand. I had a similar problem to the issue that was shown in his image. I attempted to help the best I could. As were some of you. You attempted to help him the best I could. You didn't see me going to one of the first few posts and going "Dude you need to do your research that you can't just delete pop-ups like that". I simply responded with what I thought would help...It doesn't help? Ok, say so kindly and move on. I even reworded my entire post and yet all of you still continued to ridicule me. I didn't do research...so what? I was suggesting something. Nothing you all had to say "We tell forum mods about these kinds of links". I provided the link to the main site, not an actual download link. If you do some searching on the site, you'd find the trial. I was trying to send him to any dangerous/revolting site, just the site where I found my solution. If you actually read this entire post of mine, kudos to you. For those of you who stop on the first sentence and hit "Quote" right away, F you.

iAntivirus and VirusBarrier Express only scan for Mac malware. The rest do both. AFAIK.
