Do you have an external display plugged in? If not, can you list your startup items here?

Thanks!
Cody

OMG yes, I do, but its turned off.
Actually my projector is just idle connected to my laptop and I just turn it on whenever I need it, too bad it cant detect that its turned on/off :(.

Anyway when I unplug it, it is working now :), thanks

No problem! :) That is at the top of my list to put in the next release. 'External Display' or something similar will show up in the dependent process list.

I finally got my Arrandale MBP today, and your little genius of an app, Cody, was the very first thing I downloaded and installed. It works like a charm, and is so elegant with its tiny colorless interface in the menu bar - just so seamless, like it was shipped directly with the rest of the OS, yet highly informative.

I know that you've been praised to high heavens for it, but I just wanted to say thank you anyway - great job.

Thanks very much! I'm glad you like it. :)

No problem! Glad I could be of assistance!

Kinda funny bug: when started on another Mac with totally different VGA, it crearly states I'm using a 330M. I'm sure you assume the user is totally aware of which computer is currently using: big mistake! :D

Beside that, very nice util! :)

Bug?

I seem to have stumbled across a bug. Whenever the GPU switches over to Nvidia, the Growl notification pops up but the icon in the menubar disappears. Only when killing those processes that fire up the 330m does the "i" reappear. Has anyone else come across this?

FWIW, I think the plain black icons are definitely better than adding all kinds of color or user-definable icon clutter.

Are you sure you are running the latest version? latest version is 1.5

Yes, it's the latest version; I just downloaded it this morning. I used it briefly when it was first released, but uninstalled it while I was experimenting on my own. It remains the most convenient app, so I decided to reinstall.

Thanks! Haha, yeah I didn't include any logic for detecting what kind of other GPUs a system might have. It looks specifically for the 330M and the Intel HD Graphics.

Chris - thanks for the feedback. I can't say I've ever seen it behave like that, and I haven't heard any other reports of it doing that either. Does it still disappear if you turn off Growl notifications in the gfxCardStatus preferences? Anything interesting in the Console when it disappears/reappears? Which apps specifically are causing this?

Also, thanks for the thoughts on the icons. I decided to leave them be, as what you said is on track with what 95% of other users have said, and my personal preferences as well. :) I got at least 12 emails a couple hours after the suggestion was made to add colors or logos, telling me that the graphics should be left alone. :D

Thanks!
Cody

A deeper inspection may be the key for future hardware compatibility with no code added at all. :)

Indeed! In that respect, the app could use a little polishing. Hopefully they don't come out with any new models *quite* yet...that would be a little unfortunate! I'll work some of this in gradually if I think of it.

Thanks!

I agree the icons at the top should be left alone. However, I wouldn't mind seeing a different icon for the applications menu. I keep my application folder in the dock, and accessing them from there, sometimes it's really hard to see (especially if you have a dark background), because the icon is black and the stack is a slightly transparent charcoal, a lot of times it's really hard to see it. But other than that, I have it in my login items, so it's not really that much of a problem, just would be nice if it was easier to see :) But keep up the good work, it's a very useful app!

Cody: Looks like it was just a corrupt download. Yesterday your server seemed to be suffering from extremely high latency, and downloads wouldn't complete. I finally got a download to go all the way through on another machine, which I then installed. I just did a reinstall and it's working fine. BTW, the apps that were causing it were Fresh and NetNewsWire.

And as an aside, I checked out the story your hometown newspaper wrote about you, and it looks like you've got a bright future ahead of you! You've probably already heard by now, but I hope you got into MIT.:D

You have a point - I'll make a note to make an icon that's more visible against the transparent charcoal background. Thanks! :)

I'm not surprised - Ars Technica featured my app...and I'm still on shared hosting. It didn't handle it too well, haha. :D Glad you found out what the problem was!

Regarding my future, unfortunately, I didn't get into MIT...but I did get into RIT, and I've accepted their offer for admission. I think it's the right choice for me, because there's approximately a year of mandatory co-op where you're not paying tuition, and the experience is important to me. Companies like Apple/Google/Microsoft and tons of government defense contractors fight tooth and nail to get into their career fairs and recruit, so that's cool as well. I've seen too many college CS/SE programs where there is no actual practical experience involved, and with the 5-6 years or so of actual experience I already have, I don't think that would be any good for me. Especially considering how quickly everything changes...I can't afford to be without experience for those few years. Doing things like creating apps on my own time (I've got a lot more ideas on the way ;) will help keep me up to speed with the latest tech, as well.

I appreciate the kind words!
Cody

so has anyone written an app that lets you select which graphics card you want activated, rather than the automatic version? Is this even possible?

Currently, this is not possible (or at least it hasn't been figured out). Hopefully, 10.6.4 will resolve this forced automated switching issue, but that's still unclear as well.

I downloaded this program yesterday and noticed the 330m is always on when I browse a website using chrome. Anyone else notice that?

just got my new mbp. installed your app. Nice! kudos, and all that jazz.

Such a vital app, especially for using the battery.

WTG.

Almost forgot to install this app after I received my MBP a few days ago. Just downloaded it and it's working flawlessly. Clean, nice, and unobtrusive.

Two thumbs up Cody :)
