i've been waiting for somebody to write an app like this. i was going to attempt it at the weekend but you've beat me to it!

as previously mentioned, swap the text for icons and i'll happily add it to my login items :D

Thanks, working on it right now! I'm picky about my icons, so I'm making sure not a pixel is out of place. As rawd said, I don't want to run into copyright issues.

Thanks for the app, good stuff. Does it (yet) update on whatever else we know triggers the switch, like plugging in an external display?

Not yet, but it can! I'll look up the notification OS X sends out when an external display is connected and add it to the list of triggers. Currently, as I said before, it only updates upon launching or terminating any application.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll post an update soon.

Thanks for the Quit button! Such service is amazing!

Perhaps you can add a "refresh" option for the really obsessive folks ;) , or a timed update just to make sure.

Funny! I thought the same thing. Latest version is up! Icons, manual update, and it also lists the name of the card in the menu in case "i" and "n" aren't obvious enough. :D

Same link as usual! http://codykrieger.com/gfxCardStatus/

Thanks again for all of the feedback! ^^,

EDIT: also, forgot to say, it does update now when an external display is plugged in, I think. I don't have an external monitor to test with, but I added the necessary notification as a trigger.

nifty little app you made I was hanging around this thread waiting for someone to put one out, and your execution is flawless and you have been extremely nice adding all these features people wanted when you could have just made it and said take it or leave it.
Kudos to you!

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words! I originally just made it for personal use, but I figured nobody else really wanted to check the system profiler every time either, so I decided to release it here. Glad it's working out for you!

Just adding my props to bitninja. The app rocks!

That said... I still can't figure out what's keeping it on the 330m... It even stays there on idle... Some stupid background process.

I've noticed that my 330m (15" High Res i7) is always on. I've never seen the Intel GPU turned on yet.

I've restarted and shut down the computer a few times to see, and the same thing occurs - the Intel graphics chip is almost never used.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Mine does the same thing.

I'm headed to the Apple Store tomorrow to see what they have to say (or if they've heard anything from the mothership), but I'm sure the "geniuses" will be confounded. We'll see how it goes.

This just started happening to me today. Now even after restarting I can't get back to intel graphics.

May we have revised screen-shots?

Sure thing, Robbie.

One while running on the Intel graphics, menu open:

One while running on the NVIDIA graphics, menu closed (it's the "n"):

Nice work on the menubar app!

I just noticed that by hiding the chat pane in iGoogle, it immediately switched from the 330M back to the Intel HD.

I can't say whether my machine has ever run on the integrated GPU. What kind of system do you have?

Like the other poster, I'm running a 15" i7 hi res. I don't know whether the OP has a 2.66GHz, but that's what I have.

Looks amazing! Great job

Thanks, both of you! I just uploaded a new version, if the inconsistency of the fonts between the "n" and the "i" bothers you as much as it did me. Now both are the italic bold style letter, and are consistent. See the screenshots I posted above - the second should be updated with the new style. The obligatory link for reference:

Just a little aside here. I like Twitter a lot, and I keep a Twitter client running all the time. Thus, it's important now that the app does not activate the Nvidia card for the sake of my battery. Since Tweetie is now out of the running :)(), I've been trying out different options. And you know what I found out...

...Adobe Air-powered TweetDeck does NOT use the 330M!

Is that a +1 for an Adobe product? At least for the time being?

Just thought I'd share.

Haha, new version galore! Next step is an auto-update feature...

Looks and works great.

I'm running 15" i5 2.4GHz with no hi res display. Mine was switching fine between the two, running mostly on intel graphics unless I would open photoshop or something. Now it's all dedicated graphics.

Have you installed any new apps that might be running in the background or menubar?

Indeed! What kind of auto update feature do you mean? It already updates on app launch and app terminate, and (it should at least) when external displays are plugged in or the display configuration changes. Like a timer-style auto update?
