Good article. I use Amplosion (I think is what it's called), Noir, and Banish in addition to typical content blocking with Wipr. Has been game changing.

I could not possibly by bothered to give a **** about any website's ad revenue. I'm quite enjoying using the web without clunky, distracting ads.

I can really suggest Noir, it’s great. Works good with shortcuts to enable it at sunset etc.

Only extension i use is Wipr which is an adblocker. Also gets rid of trackers and the cookie/GDPR notices. i'm quite happy with it.

it blocks 89% of trackers on this page:

for comparison, default safari is 12%, Duckduck Go browser is ~40% and Block Bear is ~64%

it is a paid app but worth it, imo. by far the best adblocker i've used on iOS.

I’m a bit confused by Banish. In the App Store it says it doesn’t send any data back to the developer but when enabling the extension it says the app can read my credit cards and passwords… what does that mean?
For the credit cards, you can just do regex locally. I'm not sure how any autofill knows where a password is supposed to go, but it could be using that logic for passwords.

I'm getting 83% but I probably still have some custom Hosts stuff still and nearly everything blocked in Lockdown with a bunch of manually added urls to block. I used to use Better until they stopped development on it, which isn't fun since it was a paid app and I gifted it to all my friends one night. I'm definitely looking into alternatives now.

So what’s more annoying, the cookies and pop-ups or the cookie-buster pop-up-stopper apps tracking you and collecting your data in order to bust the cookies and stop the pop-ups?

Who else thinks Safari and the available extensions on IOS really sucks?

Please do not suggest another browser as it's a sheep in wolfs clothing.

If you use YouTube on Safari, use the Vinegar.app to make the video element a <video> one. Kills adds, and adds useful options. (Also works on Mac)/
StopTheMadness does have a similar feature. It’s nice that it gives me site specific settings, too. So I can use it on YouTube without impacting other sites (as it warns that that setting has the potential to break site functionality).

Every extension that can read or modify a page has the same templated warning put out there by Apple. It’s a notice that the extensions are being given access to view your pages and modify them, which is what many extensions do need to perform their function.

It’s important to trust the app that you’re giving the access to. Many will note no data is sent and in some cases that’s probably verifiable by monitoring network traffic if they truly send no data to their servers. Some apps that do have network components might be harder to monitor but.

I think it’s worth being weary with extensions, but at the same time be mindful that the Apple warning is very nuclear in its wording and that apps that don’t send data off your device at all will still have that notice.
Plus, you can totally enable them only for specific websites. (Though I wouldn’t mind the ability to say “enable this extension on all sites except for these specific ones”, a blacklist instead of a whitelist.) I don’t allow, say, Noir access to sites like Facebook or banking sites, sites that I feel are confidential in one way or another, even if dark mode would be nice to have on those sites.

I do wish this article offered more in the way of deep cuts. I already had all four installed (and more, for that matter, not that I let them operate on every site). Granted, I only found out about Banish from a MacRumors article a week or two ago and it’s pretty new, but the others are ones I feel like I’ve been using since iOS 15 came out.

Exactly I was bummed out on that front. Makes you wonder; all the veterans out there is there a site/community that discusses qualitative ios app offerings more in-depth?

I was really disappointed by reddit. Perhaps there’s less a visible sub out here but I haven’t come across anything yet.

I haven’t checked it out in a while, but MacStories might be the best. It does cover macOS, but, despite the name, it gives a lot more coverage to iOS these days.

Does anyone know if Stop the Madness kills AMP on Google Images? I’ve been using Amplosion but it does not work with Google Images and the developer seems to have abandoned it.
