Engadget also notes that the FCC has posted documents relating to the new Apple TV, but that photos of the device are not included. According to a letter included with the documentation, Apple has requested confidentiality on such photos for a period of 180 days.

Why? Because they don't want us to see the tech inside?

iFixit will tear it down soon anyway, so... :D

My guess is Apple was not sure it was going to be ready to release along with the new iPod Touch. Either the content deals or the software/manufacturing could have held them up enough to wait on its announcement.

Several things with these releases have been odd for apple. There was a link on the iPhone iTunes store for streaming TV shows yesterday as well (it lead to shows you could by but not rent).

Anyone try renting a TV show in iTunes on a computer and streaming it to the current AppleTV? (you cant rent them from the current AppleTV for some reason - you would think it would be the same as the movies currently, unless its done with HTTP Streaming...)

I seem to remember the speaker at least venting a large portion of sound from the dock connector. The pinhole microphone would be appropriate next to the aperture.
The pinhole mic on the rear facing camera would be highly directional and useless for the front-facing camera and thus FaceTime video calls.

One microphone placed at the bottom would do double duty.

Interesting. The battery capacity appears to be increased by roughly 20% (from 750 mAh / 2775 Wh to 930 mAh / 3440 Wh).

I'll be getting you in October. Sandy Bridge or dare I say Llano is next.

I admire your patience. I'll be ordering right away.

GTX 465, 2 external HDD's, a sound card, and a new laptop have all become mine in the past month. I, a poor college student. :(

Now that would make more sense. I just wonder about two way communication though if the speaker is using the dock connector area as well.

Waiting beats paying $60 more while I'm out of the country. I did suggest not getting that GTX 465.

Actually, I think you are right. I was just perusing the user's manual for this thing and it looks like there's a pinhole microphone next to the rear-facing camera. I guess it's sensitive enough to capture audio for FaceTime conversations as well since you're holding it at arm's length.

Unlike the 3rd generation iPod touch, the new one doesn't leak audio out through the dock connector: there is a dedicated speaker grille on the left side.

I doubt that would help improve reception. I'm already frustrated with my 3g Touch that only has 1/4 of the range on my MacBook (that is singing with my AEBS on 802.11n) which is still unacceptable. I think this new Touch should only double the range of my Touch.

Edit: Just checked the Apple iPod Touch site and it does say it has a stainless steel back. Is anyone ready for another take on "Your holding it wrong"?

Makes sense about waiting to by your iPod. Problem was, I landed a buyer for my 260, and the card was practically free after rebates and selling the games. With disappointing early rumors about ATI 6xxx, I saw no reason to wait.

Well lucky me. I've only played with the 2G Touch for a few minutes.

That's a worthwhile improvement.

I remember you mentioning how that would work out after selling the previous card and the bundled games. You don't happen to have Just Cause 2 still? Where did you have to download the other games from?

Am I the only one who thinks the FCC has NO BUSINESS posting teardown photos of products on the web?

Government seems to be more intrusive each day.

Only one part of the event pissed me off and that was the fact the 8gb model for the touch still exists i was hoping to upgrade my ipod without it costing an arm. :/

The hole at the back beside the camera is for the backside illumination sensor.

Not according to the owner's manual.

Besides, how does the backside ambient light matter? If you're using the backside camera, the CMOS sensor itself will provide the data. The ambient light sensor on the front is to adjust the display brightness due to ambient light; it uses less power than the front-facing camera.

Hahaha. "Biggest redesign ever..." Are you kidding me? This is almost exactly the same design as the first gen iPod touch. After 3 years, STILL they use a stainless steel back, aka Scratch Machine?!

I'll save my $$$ and keep using my 2nd gen iPod touch THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Mic Is On Back Next To Camera, Speaker Is On Bottom Like On The iPhones

The hole at the back beside the camera is for the backside illumination sensor.
Nope. That's the microphone. Existence of a Backside Illumination Sensor in the rear camera is yet to be determined.
More likely a second microphone for Facetime noise cancellation and/or for better aimed audio recording when taking videos.
Nope. That's the one and only mic.
I thought the mic was on the bottom.

Probably an LED to indicate the video camera is on.
Nope. The one and only built in microphone is inside the pin hole next to the rear camera. No LED light.

The new improved speaker appears to be a clone of the iPhone speaker and is behind the grill next to the dock opposite side of the headphone jack.

Anyone know the pixel count of the rear camera? Front camera is .7 Mega Pixels.
