lol.. oh my fekin god ....

bender is back :)

of course the "flying drones" was a dead give-away before it escalated to this...

self combustion will be a new trend all over the world ... :p

What will this mean for Apple? reduced time, products out sooner etc.. (and customers can't keep up).

I have tough time now... image when these robots are loose.

Instead of McDonald's their going to call it MechDonald's 20 years from now. Thanks foxcon!

headline should read

more people soon to be out of work, poverty increases, riots ensue, get out now while you can. The space ship leaves at noon :D

Must be an awful feeling for those manufacturing these parts and robots knowing that they are building equipment which will eventually phase them out

Aeiou

I felt the same way teaching my kids how to talk.

Do people here really not understand that robot assembly is a huge portion of manufacturing these days, most notably automobiles. Yes, even in union shops.

It's done for higher quality control and the impact on human employment is minimal because people have to watch over the robots and the finished work and there are still areas humans are needed for assembly. Ultimately robots create a safer workplace by doing the most tedious work and produce a higher quality product -- if the product designed correctly by human engineers.

Foxconn has been Apple's longtime primary partner in assembling its iPhones, iPads, and iPods. In 2011, it was Foxconn would be replacing a portion of its workers with 1 million robots, although it was not clear at the time how many jobs would be replaced by the robots.

Why don't they mention how many higher paying jobs were created to build a million robots, or how many people will be needed to maintain them once in use? Why do reporters always only provide half the story?

How would you like it if your great great grand daughter only way to make money is too sale herself in the city streets because robots have taken over 50% of the jobs we have today? Or maybe she wants to become a doctor or teacher but all have been replaced by mechs who are far superior, cheaper and "safer" to use? Or what if Korea decides to send combat robots to the United States because its "safer" for the Koreans? Or is it right for the United States to send combat mechs to other countries because we want to prevent US causality? When do you decide to stop?
I bet a great number of these Chinese female's will have to sale their bodies once they get laid off. What else do they have in China that makes the same money? If Foxconn had to put up nets around the buildings to prevent suicides I could only imagine what they would do when there is no work.
If I was them I would start a riot before it's too late. Why accept defeat laying down for the robots? If their going to replace me I'm going out with a bang.

They also won't unionize or demand better working conditions.

Been waiting for these comments. Apple is evil because they don’t make their products in the U.S. Apple is evil because they make their products in China using cheap labor. Now Apple is evil because they are using robots instead of humans.

It never ends, does it? The iHater crowd jumps from one meme to another in their failed crusade to take the company down.

Meanwhile Saint Google and Monsignor Microsoft can do no wrong and are the nexus of compassionate corporate existence. Amazing, truly amazing.

Both statements are true. The answer is to pay workers a proper wage, not to fire them, not to make them work extended hours for little pay.

Ah yes, the long sought after socialist utopia. To each according to their needs; from each according to their abilities. Ain’t gonna happen my socialist friend. Human nature precludes it no matter how much you try. Even Jesus Christ said the poor will always be with us.

Who cares if these people have mortgages to pay and kids to feed. I need my iDevice to be cheaper.

If it's like the USA then lots of service jobs will be created

They'll find other jobs. Automation has no effect on long-term unemployment, but it certainly does increase long-term wealth. Millions of jobs were lost from the spinning jenny, the use of tractors on farms, the replacement of bank workers with ATMs, computers replacing telephone operators, etc. Yet somehow unemployment has been in the same range for 200 years. If the chicken littles were right about machines killing jobs, we'd have 99% unemployment by now.

Pretty sure those addition jobs are in the new industries such as technology, consulting and banking. Which usually requires you to be above average in the smarts department. What about all those people we cant get in to those industries? Either due to the lack of education or just not being smart enough?

My god, robot workers..

its like looking into a crystal ball.. only this time it's all true.

one fatal mistake and the world will be in ruins.

*covers eyes* I can't bare to watch...

Even Jesus Christ said the poor will always be with us.

Jesus Christ never existed, he was nothing but a hero/martyr character invented to give authority to the views of the ancient author/s who created him.

But whoever said it, 'always' is a very long time. In just a few thousand years human society has completely changed beyond recognition.

With that in mind I think we will eradicate poverty eventually, we have no choice, as the current greed based system is unsustainable.

The advent of true AI will be the key, once we can create self-managing machines to do everything for us (for free), there will no longer be any need to rely on the monetary system. We will all be free to enjoy our lives however we see fit, though creativity, socialising, or even old-fashioned work if we choose.

The biggest challenge in the future will be population control, but education is the best way to deal with this. People tend to have fewer children when they know they will all survive. Fusion will give us all the power we need, and AI will make robotic space travel trivial, so our limited resources will be less of a problem then they are now.

It might all seem very sci-fi, but even if it's 100 or 1,000 years away, it's going to happen eventually. Either that, or we'll all get wiped out in some terrible biological war ...but I'm an optimist, so I think we'll be OK. :D

You either really need to through an "/s" on there or reevaluate your understanding of the world.

I guess everyone will have to find something else to cry about now that they can't whine about working conditions for the workers assembling iPhones.
