the larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 model have suggested that it may arrive as a premium model in lower quantities with perhaps exclusive features such as a sapphire crystal display

why this discrimination ?? why not apply the same idea such ipad line up?
i want a sapphire display but i dont want a 5.5" iPhone

You do realise that a sapphire display will look and feel the same as a glass display... I havnt broke or scratched a screen in years... It's really no biggy unless your a clutz... Just this years marketing bumf...

I think to a very large degree, bigness of phone is almost purely a fashion trend, and has very very little to do with the usability and functionality of the device.

I couldn't disagree more. I guess you must be blessed with perfect eyesight, though.

I think it's time people realized that big screens are not fads. They're popular because they're better than small screens. Apple could and should respond by releasing one.

This is exactly what I hope doesn't happen. I don't want a 5.5" phone. 4.7" is perfect for me. But I also don't want to sacrifice any features because I choose 4.7". If Apple adds features into the 5.5" that the 4.7 doesn't have people will be screaming

I don't think the people with less eyesight want a larger screen so much, but rather larger words.

Android is much better about not putting up fonts the size of bacteria, even on their small screen phones. If apple would just stop with the teeny tiny font thing there'd be a lot less screaming about screen size from the over 40 set. If the larger iPhone still uses tiny fonts it will have accomplished nothing.

I know you can play with font size settings, but lots of apps, even Apple's own apps often ignore those settings - letters so small simply shouldn't be allowed except for rare and unusual circumstances. Hopefully iOS8 addresses some of this.

What a stupid comment.

Third-party apps, multi-tasking, background wallpapers, new UI in iOS 7, to name a few obvious additions.

How rude.. and blinkered, biased.. etc etc..
What have apps got to do with the OS?..

Multi tasking..?.. really?.. reloading of apps isn't exactly MT now is it..

Wallpapers?.. 7 years in and wallpapers is considered a biggy... Barrel.. scraping.. anyone....

Changing icons to Fisher price ones is not really floating my boat...

Now if they fix the intents system... Or at least have one.. that would be a start.... Till then it's a OS that grannys can handle with no sweat.. what does that tell you..

MacRumors doesn't let you insult forum members, but with comments like this it's really, really difficult.

So what you are basically saying is that if someone disagrees with your train of thought.. then they are posting stupid comments.. if they back up their comments with specific details of why they thought the original comments were valid then that make you want to insult them and be all mean... Wow.. keyboard warrior anyone?..
If bullying tactics over the web makes you feel good about yourself then go for it... I've got a thick skin.. it will give me some good source material for my next thesis....

They should make these in a double-hinged + swiveled clamshell form factor, so that they open along the long edge with a keyboard inside and two Retina screens.

They could call it the iMacProBusinessAllDataAccessServiceSystem, or "iMaProBADASS" for short.

I'd buy one! ;)

I'm not trying to be a 'keyboard warrior' it's just a comment like 'the OS hasn't changed since 2007' followed up with 'what do apps have to do with the OS' seem to be so misinformed that you come across as trolling.

Indeed, larger words are great. And you can fit more of them on larger screens! :)

Why is it misinformed... The core features of android fare exceed ios.. most popular apps are on all platforms anyway.. next u will be saying ios is better because u can get more cases etc.. see my point...
So enough with the trolling comments.. everything I've said is valid... Now your "stupid" and "i wish I could insult you" comments speak volumes for your persona..
Can I ask... Are you an only child?.. genuine question.. not mucking about...

This wasn't about Android v iOS. You said the OS is the same as it was in 2007, which isn't true.

Agreed.. choice is bad!.. Heck I even think rainbows are evil... All those damn colours..

The problem with the choice is if you buy one model, it almost suerly lack a funcionality that other model has and that other model can do something that the other two cant. Thats not diversity and choice, thats limitation.

comments like this...

Can't wait for the first Android fanboy comment about how Apple is catching up with Android. I can't stop laughing at idiotic comments like that.

The bite in the Apple logo was done by the Android bot. # Apple is finally catching up. lol. How can ios8 have half the features of kitkat4. The math doesn't work. Seriously... I am eyeing the iphone6 for sapphire and FLAC and it better be pretty or I won't sell my nexus quite yet.

sapphire is better than glass

You do realise that a sapphire display will look and feel the same as a glass display... I havnt broke or scratched a screen in years... It's really no biggy unless your a clutz... Just this years marketing bumf...

Sapphire is scratch proof for sure... but another quality is the higher dielectric constant of sapphire making it better for capacitive touch sensitivity... almost twice that of glass. I likely won't scratch mine too, but I usually get the ghost armour which now I won't bother with. Also... sapphire is just plain cool... lol... I didn't need marketing to tell me that. Saying that... Phones are becoming like jewelry and will have some impractical wow factor to lure the masses.

Finally...after years of procrastination and complete denial Apple decides to play catch up to Samsung, HTC, Sony, Moto and others that have provided wonderful spacious displays.

I'm actually looking forward to the on and off prediction of a 5.5" iPhone morphing from the dead zone to potentially becoming a reality. iPhone 6 at a very modest 4.7" is still far too small for my usage.

If and when Apple builds the 5.5" I'll be a buyer. It will be very nice to have an iPhone that suits my requirements.
