How about the new iPad mini coming with a phone option?

Problem with that is the iPad's 4:3 aspect ratio makes it impossible to hold as a phone for most people and would force you to make all calls on speaker or through a headset.

A 5.5" iPhone may look a little funny held to the ear, but no more funny than a Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note, or HTC One...all over 5".

I still don't think apple is going to come out with a 5.5 inch iPhone this year. Maybe in the future but i'm really not feeling this year.

Who's laughing now?

It's interesting to observe that the same vitriole that spewed from this forum when folks like me were heralding the arrival of the iPad a few years ago has predictably morphed into vitriole on iPhone size.

Hey fanbois ... the larger phones are coming. You weren't excited about the iPad either and my how effective your rants here at MR were! You certainly steered that ship to port for Apple didn't you?

Based on these rumors, there is no way I am pre-ordering a 4.7" until we know the specs for the 5.5". Depends on resolution of display and battery life.

My guess is they will announce both at the same time but with different release dates.

Don't worry, if due to a 2-year contract (sounds like you're with T-Mobile though), when the 6S comes out you will say "I'm glad I skipped the 6!".
And then when the 7 comes out, those who own a 6 will say "glad I skipped the 6S!".
And so on, and so forth.

Who said I'm skipping the iPhone 6? I'm going to get the 5.5 inch... probably the only big purchase I'll make this year... but by god I'm getting it! :D

the larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 model have suggested that it may arrive as a premium model in lower quantities with perhaps exclusive features such as a sapphire crystal display

why this discrimination ?? why not apply the same idea such ipad line up?
i want a sapphire display but i dont want a 5.5" iPhone

Why is it idiotic when its true? Heck, even blackberry has a bigger screen than iphone. Now go back and drink some more of that apple koolaide.

Because a large screen isn't a feature of Android? Android is a kernel, not a phone. OMG people, don't you guys get that? You compared Blackberry, which is a phone, to Android, which isn't a phone, and YOU tell me to go drink more kool aid? Wow.

You're being too "on the nose" when people refer to Android these days it's "Android Phones" not Android the software. Don't be a d, you do know what they mean. :p

Agreed.
I'm no logistics or manufacturing expert, but I can't imagine the sapphire plant in Arizona churning out enough perfect sapphire displays (at 5.5" at that!) to keep up with demand. Then what, ship to China for the rest of the production?
If anything, the sapphire has to be for the iWatch. Sounds like that will be the second "Made in the USA" product. Based on the stories about the plant, that seems much more doable.

But hey, what do I know. Now someone give me a paycheck for being an Apple analyst.

Question - Would a 5.5" model lead to you selling your iPad? For me it would! I have an iPad simply because my iPhone screen is too small for consistent use around the house when I'm not at my desk on my 27-inch iMac.

A 5.5" iPhone would be a different experience and would probably allow me to just have an iMac+iPhone with no iPad in between. Doubt Apple would like that though.

Once I got my Samsung Note 3 I ditched my ipad mini, there was just no need to take two devices with me to work. With the SN3 I can watch movies on my desk and have all the functionality a phone offers. I particularly like the phone number blocking modes the Samsung has that Apple phones don't offer from being able to ignore a specific number to a range of numbers starting with specific digits.

I may however be tempted if a 5.5" version iPhone does come out.

I see that you have an iPad Air (based on your signature).
Check this out... you may re-think getting rid of your iPad Air.

I think 4.7" for a phone is perfect. My wife's Moto X fits perfectly in my hand and all corners are easy to reach with my thumb. While I like my Nexus 5, Google pushing out random updates (that I sure didn't see) that cause my battery life to drop 80% faster than normal is irritating. I just hope Apple sees the need for a better keyboard (something swype like).

Looks like i'll be back to iOS again.
