Anyone else get the feeling that the iPhones to be released this fall will be iPhone 6SE and iPhone 6SE+ (to go along with (iPhone SE...just announced) and that in 2017, we'll a major update to iPhone design with the curved display, etc?

We probably don't know what they are yet because of the lack of leaks, I'm sure Apple will want to give people a reason to upgrade to the 7, after all the tag line for the 6S was "the only thing that's changed is everything"
You're right we don't know for sure but it's already April. I highly doubt they're still working on the 7. Manufacturers are generally a few years ahead of product launches.

It's looking more and more like the 7 is going to be a minimal upgrade and a downgrade depending on how you're looking at it.
Not really. It'll be a huge upgrade from my 6+. Going to get more ram and a better camera for sure.

Here it is, the yearly implication that Apple are going to use OLED screens in the next model... and we can all guess what happens... they use IPS LCDs, thankfully. OLED is a mess - if OLED were really THAT GOOD, why are they not completely replacing LCDs? It's not as if OLED are new and bleeding edge. Apple are about colour accuracy, especially when you consider their new iPad Pro 9.7". Why would they move one product across to OLED and not the rest - can you say "inconsistent"? I am extremely confident that Apple will skip OLED panels altogether, and that they have something of their own in the pipeline... a little way off yet.

OLED screen: nice gimmick to have if your name is "Samsung".

The 7 sure is looking disappointing so far for a major "tick"/redesign release.

At this stage it looks like it'll be thinner (again) which hardly anyone particularly needs or wants, which means also there's unlikely to be any significant improvement in battery life.

It looks like it'll lose the headphone jack, which could be a significant annoyance to some people. For instance, this likely rules out listening while charging on the move (something I do often because of limited battery life) unless you have wireless headphones.

It might get an extra speaker, the TrueTone display with larger gamut from the iPad Pro, and a basic level of waterproofing but none of these feel like significant, necessary upgrades, rather nice-to-have iterative improvements.

I feel like there's some yet-to-be leaked other changes planned for the 7 but that it won't be OLED.

Why on earth would they make a curved display? There's no compelling problem that a curved display would solve. The amount of phones with curved displays can be counted on one hand; it's hardly a revolutionary technology, and hardly a "must have" that everyone's hyped about... so why would Apple - king of pragmatism - use it just for the sake of it being curved?

I don't see it and I don't buy it. Wow, it never fails to astonish me how idiotic SO many people think Apple are.

I like OLED, but if this is going to be ilke the Edge, but wrap around on both sides, how will that bet better ?

Apple can call this "Extended Reach-ability" or something. Samsung did the same with the Edge..

Just an excuse to make bigger phone, is to just you easier access from any side.

Why can't you use a phone like the rest of us.

Thanks for showing us you haven't a clue about this.

Thank you for knowing that I am an electronics engineer working at component level, and have been following OLED since day 1, and as whizz-bang contrast goes, it's great... but so what. When are you coming for dinner? Not seen you in ages... you should come over - you know my address, you've known me all my life, after all :)

Tim Cook doesn't like OLED - he's said so himself - read:

  • long way since it launched the Galaxy S in 2010; the Galaxy S3’s screen is superior to the S1 in multiple respects.

Compare the Galaxy S3 against the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5, however, and the OLED technology doesn’t shine as bright. That’s literally true, in this case — Samsung capped maximum brightness sharply, apparently in an attempt to reduce power consumption. Even so, the Galaxy S3 draws more power than either of the iPhones, both in absolute terms (1.3W at peak brightness vs. 0.42W for the iPhone 4 and 0.74W for the iPhone 5) and when normalized for a 4-inch display.

The color gamut on the S3 series is substantially larger than the sRGB standard, which results in inaccurate color (a too-large color gamut actually hurts color reproduction more than a restricted gamut). The screen is hard to read in bright light due to the brightness cap. The S3’s color spectrum is shaped quite differently from the other three devices, which contributes to the saturation problem.

The power efficiency findings may surprise people, given that OLED technology is often touted as being more efficient than other types of displays, not less. It’s absolutely true that under certain circumstances, OLEDs sip power while LCDs gulp it. The problem for OLEDs is that their maximum brightness settings can draw considerably more power than LCDs, particularly in daylight. (See: Electrowetting displays: Brighter than LCD, lower-power, and daylight readable.)

Samsung is heavily committed to its OLED roadmap and we expect the gap between the technologies to narrow as manufacturing improves, but Cook’s comments aren’t just one executive sniping at another from a high-profile platform. As gorgeous as OLED displays can be, they still require proper calibration. In the power-constrained world of smartphones, an OLED display may not always be the best option, particularly when compared to high-end LCDs manufactured with IGZO or LTPS (low temperature poly silicon)."

Every single one YOU used is the key here, most people haven't had this issue.

The thing about OLED is Apple won't implement it until it's better than IPS LCD in every way, not just some of them.

That means they have to solve colour accuracy and resolution across the entire gamut, and they need to be convinced of its reliability and longevity, which takes time.

Good for you?

I guess Apple is going to call it iPhone 7s EDGE with Retina Display and claimed some ******** innovations crap using Jony Ive's video to claim that they are the first to actually introduce phones with curved display.. :p

From the article they have an entire one and almost half year to come up with something better. This is their 2017 release.

Apple uses 2-3 year design platforms for designing, like first iPhone - 3G-3GS were one platform (plastic cover),
4-4s were a second platform (glass cover), 5-5S/6-6S (metal/aluminum cover) - so the next platform change is either 7 or or 8. I don't know what can they change so drastically in materials, after bendgate they are trying to make more sturdy phone and metal is a best, arguably, so either aluminum to stay or maybe some other kind of metal cover. I just don't think they'll move to cheap plastic like Galaxy.
Perhaps 7 may resemble a much thinner iPhone SE, for example, but with 4.7/5.5 inch display and iPad Pro like antenna covers.

8 will be a full redesign with OLED and new metals?

Solve....resolution? o_O And none of the other "issues" are really issues.

I meant colour resolution or basically accuracy but more analogous to "precision". Sorry for unclear language.

It's a tad shame that this amazing change isn't even on the cards with the iPhone 7.
So will it truly be a 6SS instead?

Possibly, but I think the 6S was pretty great for an S release, gaining 3D Touch.
