So I guess the real sign of when the device will be ready or near completion is when iOS 5 is ready. which I imagine has to be pretty soon at this point.

Not necessarily. Just because iOS 5 works great on current-gen devices and older ones doesn't mean they've fine-tuned it for the iPhone 5... unless, of course, you've actually used an iPhone 5 and know something that we don't know.

Wow, I can't believe we don't have a leak yet if 150,000 are being made every day.
Looking forward to seeing if it is worth the upgrade. I get my phone through work so often have a somewhat screwy but lenient upgrade path. I definitely wouldn't be through my two years for my iPhone 4 in normal terms, but it depends somewhat on home my work ordered me the phone in the first place. I doubt I'd pay the no contract price for an upgrade, but if I can upgrade for $200, I will definitely do it. I may even do it for the no contract price depending on what I can sell my iPhone 4 for on ebay.

It's too late in the game to not have iOS 5 tuned for the iPhone 5 hardware platform. There would be no time if they are to ship in October to do such tuning, Q&A it, beta test, etc..

Well you're right about the fact that they would've had to have started a long time ago, but there's always a chance that they're not quite finished yet.

Gonna wait

I am gonna wait till the next generation as i have a iPhone 4 in canada and paid 700 bucks for it to be unlocked. i aint no millionaire so i can't just throw money away. But i am glad that its another big improvement other then a small one.....hopefully. cuz then i know that there is a big improvement from 4 to 6.

Cheers

So... if the iPhone 5 comes with a bigger screen... will you be needing help removing the foot from your mouth ? ;)

It's about trends. Bigger screens have really come unto the radar after the iPhone 4 introduction. It's now a big feature in 2011. Same like higher than 480x320 resolution. Back when they introduced the 3GS, only the highest of the high end model Androids announced were with 800x480 resolution, the standard being the iPhone resolution of 480x320. The iPhone 4 bumped up the resolution to stay within the market.

There's good cause to believe a screen size bump could be due. Especially considering it's one of the weak points (smaller screen = more zooming).

Yes, a bigger screen is a big feature in 2011...for those who actually want a bigger screen. But we don't all want that. I don't, nor does my wife, or any of our other friends with iPhones.

I don't doubt that you need the larger screen and believe it to be necessary, but you act as though most people agree with you. I doubt that you would even have a majority of MacRumors members who would agree with this, much less the millions of average users out there who don't post on tech forums.

Don't worry, when the iPhone 5 ships with a bigger screen, you'll want it then. ;)

I don't particularly need a larger screen nor do I believe it to be necessary. If I did, I'd have a phone with one. I think they are nice to have, especially as how they can be put on the phone without changing anything else.

You're reading way too much into my post. I'm simply pointing out that a lot of the "superphones" and "smartphones" these days have 4"+ screens. It's a trend in the industry.

iPhone 5 shipments are said to be set to reach 5-6 million for the month of September and over 22 million for the fourth quarter of the year. Interestingly, the report notes that while Pegatron has reportedly been tabbed to handle about 15% of the iPhone 5 production load, the company may not begin deliveries until next year.

So if they are in fact already shipping (or will ship in September) then the release to market will be in October?
But if the Pegatron [what faction of the Transformers is this?] is right, then we have to wait until 2012:eek:?

It's moot. The thing is that it doesn't matter what you or I want in the iPhone screen. It's about what Steve likes.

He has seen larger screens, probably on iPhone prototypes in some lab in Cupertino. However, Steve likes the 3.5" screen which is why each successive iPhone has the same size screen. Steve's the guy who green lights the final design.

That's the most plausible scenario.

his fingers are extra small due to poor health fact is that the screen is too small.. and having your fingers n the screen hinders viewing of games and apps...

White 64GB iPhone 5 please i need white for a change all my iphones has been black

I like that white mock up but not digging the plastic volume button make it aluminum please :) not fan of plastic

Just because they haven't sent out iPhone 5's to devs for testing doesn't mean they're not testing iOS 5 in house. Be assured that iOS 5 means there's a new iPhone coming.

You make some good points. And I definitely see the screen size trends in the industry you mention. Of course, I don't view Apple as a company that follows trends, so much as one that sets its own trends. Take a look at the 7 inch tablet market for example. Apple is staying away from that like the plague.

Of course at the end of the day, Apple makes the devices they want to make. They could have decided that they want a bigger screen. And if they do, I may or may not end up liking it. I will say though that if they go too big, I won't be getting one. If I were the type to carry a man-purse or a satchel, then it wouldn't be an issue. But since this is not the case, then a small portable size (similar to 3Gs/4) is very important.

Bigger screen only if it doesn't loose the "Retina Display" condition, and it doesn't become an annoying device to hold or put inside the pockets.
Surely for some it will be a nice addition to their belt.

How is that a trend though ? 7" tablets haven't been shown to sell very well.

Apple does follow trends, in their own way. High resolution screens on phones were all the rage right after the 3GS shipped. iPhone 4 got a high resolution screen. Apple just did it in their own way, making it the "retina" display instead of using the industry standard resolutions (800x480 or 858x480) that other phones were using.

Having browsed a selection of handsets with 4.3" or 4.5" screens, I'd say you'd be hard pressed to even notice the difference as far as portability goes. They are not overly bigger than the current iPhone and they fit inside a jeans pocket with no problem at all.

in all honestly Im still waiting on what apple has to offer for the new phone, but am very scepticle as to if it will be up to snuff...

1) have had ios 5 beta 7 installed for a while and really, not much new or exciting, imessenger is the same as texting, twitter integration a absolute waste of their time, the new notification system is cool but boring when you have had it since ios 3.1.3 jailbroken... Nothing new but needs new specs

2) held the new adroid samsung galexy SII and was blown away at its smoothness and colors, screen, reslution and feel...

3) IOS is boring, andoid with widgets and a "real" not "cartoony" feel really seems interesting to me...

I will say that the only thing that is still keeping me with apple at this point is the customer service... if I have a problem with my phone I can just get another one... with android... who do you even call?

iMessage the same as texting? What on earth did you expect? I'm sure those who are avid users of Twitter would beg to differ that integration is 'a waste of time'. And as for there not being much new in iOS 5...a proper notifications system was the one thing iOS has been crying out for for years, I'd say thats quite a big step for people still on iOS 4...

Apple didn't decide to forgo offering a 7 incher after seeing them not sell well. They decided that 9.7 was the sweet spot long before any of these manufacturers even entered the tablet market. With iPad dominating, this choice was obviously the correct one.

I'm not sure this is a point either of us can really win. I think opting for a retina display (compared to all the other substandard displays) was completely setting a trend. Of course you can argue that the overall trend was increased resolution. I think we are both right on this one.

As for this, I will withhold judgement for now. You never know how large or small, sleek or cumbersome a device is until you see/hold it. If anyone can convince me it is Apple, but I am skeptical at present. I will say that I don't wear cargo pants, so any increase would have to be minimal. When I see the large android phones, I cringe.

Actually, there were already a line-up of such 7 inch or close to tablets on the market before even the iPad was announced. See Nokia's line of Maemo Internet tablets (the 700, n800, n810).

I really don't think the "retina" display makes all other sub-standard. Quite the contrary, I absolutely despise my friend's SAMOLED+ 800x480 screen. It just looks so good compared to what you find on iPhones, screw the extra pixels.

And yes, my point was the trend was increased pixel counts. Apple followed that trend. Same reason that leads me to believe we might get a screen size bump on the iPhone 5 (not definitive, but a definite chance).

I wear tight fit jeans and seeing how Samsung, HTC, Sony Ericsson make phones with 4"+ screens that fit the pockets I have, I very much doubt Apple could fail here.

I really doubt you've held or seen these Android phones in person. They are not as bulky as they are made out to be.

Apple has to come with a 5 that's new (and smashing) on the outside. Not an upgraded 4 or we all will loose interest. After being disappointed badly.

If the iPhone 5 looks like this, I'll be happy.

I bought my first iPhone in September of 2007 just a few months after it's original introduction. Used it for 3 years before upgrading to the iPhone 4.

I think most people have upgraded to newer generation iPhones at around the 2 year mark following initial purchase (2g->3GS; 3G->4). But with the length of time that has passed now since the introduction of the iPhone 4, I think there might be a huge number of people looking to upgrade, including 100% of 3G users, most 3GS users, and a larger percentage of iPhone 4 users (I know I'll be trying to upgrade again).

About the only former generation users who won't upgrade are those who purchased 3GSs for $50 with AT&T after the 4 was already out. They're in it for different reasons.

if you were an advanced user and jailbroke your phone 2 years ago you would know that the notifcation system was done by the same person who built notifier pro, then got hired by apple to do the same for them.. its all old news and if not for a possible bigger screen... I wouldnt be waiting for the 5,

I find the iPhone 4 a perfect size, I wouldn't mind increase in display if they can fit in the same physical dimensions but wouldn't be keen on anything with a much larger footprint.

I do find it amusing that people want a redesign, better camera, LTE and bigger screen or they will not be buying one. After all, nothing about any of the above has actually been given out as fact from Apple. It has all been hyped up by people and taken as gospel. This is a RUMOURS site after all :)
Now dont get me wrong, im not flaming or shooting anyone down on here, im just adding my thoughts.
Im looking forward to the new iPhone just as much as anyone else as im still on my 3GS, and to be honest im still really happy with it, but im bored and want a new change. That change does not include going to droid as i love the iOS GUI.
I would be happy if the iPhone 5 was the same shape as the iPhone 4 but with the same processer and RAM as the iPad 2...oh and a better camera of course.
If it comes with a bigger screen and different form factor then it will just be a bonus :)

Cant wait for the keynote!!

I am curious if iPhone 5 will have higher screen resolution. If it does not, the phone will be severely underspecced compared to Android flagship phone Samsung Galaxy Prime which is rumored to have resolution 1280x800 (66% increase over iPhone resolution)
