Regardless, it is still quite irresponsible of Apple to market the phone as "half the price". Why? Because many consumers will believe them.

I hate fox news, but everything they said in that article is true.

From apples standpoint, its true. 100% true.

Well actually we don't have to take it. Before the announcement, I had planned on getting an iPhone 3G and let my daughter have my iPhone; but not anymore. In fact, I probably will just get the new HTC Touch Diamond instead and to heck with Apple and the iPhone completely.
So you're going to use the Touch Diamond on T-Mobile, then? Has HTC announced if they'll support T-Mobiles odd 3G frequencies? Be ironic to end up back on AT&T paying $30/month for the same 3G data plan that the iPhone uses!

What a ridiculous thread. Jobs should have stood up there and pointed out that AT&T's 3g data plan costs ten dollars more. ...and then what, gone over the pricing changes of every plan for every provider in the entire world? WORLDWideDeveloperConference. America is not the whole world! Not all providers rates went up. AT&Ts did, not the iPhones. AT&T continues to amaze and delight in their ability to suck at providing service for these otherwise great devices. AT&T needs an ass-chewing, not Apple. For as much as I can't wait to get the hell out of my AT&T contract, I'll bet it's nothing compared to how bad Apple wants out of theirs.

---and this is where it all goes downhill---

...but don't even start about Fox News not having a bias. The only way you could honestly say that is if you either never watched it, never looked into who writes and approves the material, or are just that far into a political extreme that you somehow think it's "centrist". Sensationalism, yellow journalism, borderline propaganda, it's all in there in little doses, every night. Nearly all their stories are based on conflict and fear. ...which is all fine and dandy, if they're going to be classified as entertainment, but to come straight out with "fair and balanced" (five republicans countering one bumbling pointless democrat is not a fair or balanced look) and "no-spin zone" (in an hour long show dedicated to... spinning topics and issues to the far-right)... etc, on and on... Like Ford adopting "Quality is Job 1", it's dishonest. Be honest and say, "We make cheap cars." Or, "Bringing balance to journalism... because we're so in the red everything we see looks like *******-speak." Blah blah blah who cares anymore.

I dont understand how anyone can bash FOX for stating FACTS.
FACT is the IPHONE costs MORE in the long term, its a FACT.
They are doing this because sales have slowed and the new model will NOT light up the sales charts like some think.
The average person will see NO reason to buy the new iphone since what they have will do the same as the new model just a bit slower.
Apple and AT&T both KNOW this, hence the RATE increase and the subsidized pricing.

I love FOX, they state FACTS..
I have one question for any Obama supporter. Please tell me which of Obamas policys has earned your vote? If you say "change", please ask the person sitting next to you to punch you in the mouth.

No one is forcing existing iPhone customers to upgrade to a different (new) product that runs on a different (faster) network.

It's not bait and switch. It's a different option that some people may choose. Those coming into the game now will pay slightly more over the course of 24 months than previous iPhone users. There is nothing shady about that. It is AT&T's NEW cost of doing business on a 3G network. And it is still very competitive with other carriers' 3G offerings.

First off. Bait and Switch didnt happen, so thats not a FACT.

Second, dont hijack threads and talk about Obama (and i rather like his policies, especially taxing people who make more a higher percentage, because frankly they can afford it. Ending the war, great, that will help put a stop the the MASSIVE debt we are accumulating.)

Apple wins because they don't have to care about losing money on unlocked phones - AT&T (and other carriers) subsidize each phone no matter what.

AT&T wins because the monthly rates are higher over time.

Perhaps if you understood the current situation you would understand better. Back when the iPhone was first released, Apple had a revenue sharing agreement with AT&T. Something no other manufacture has. Hence the reason why the iPhone was not subsidized. ATT was paying Apple instead of cutting the cost of the phone. Apple was making bank! The $20 iPhone plan should have been considered as a "treat" because they could have been charging $30 off the bat, like they do with other similar phones. AT&Ts phones are normally subsidized by $200.
Now that the new iPhone is going to be $200 cheaper, available with service discounts (unlike before), more data oriented features, I think it would be in AT&Ts best interest to raise the price, so they can reinvest it in their network so it can handle the millions of customers soaking up data. Get it?
I would say it's more Apple's fault than anything, because they wouldn't allow AT&T to subsidize it, and "suggested" they charge the cheaper rate for data. AT&T clearly got the short end of the stick. Apple was the one wanting to change the cell phone model and not allowing discounts because of perceived value of the phone. Considering that you were signing a contract, not receiving service or phone discounts with the first gen, they helped you out by giving you a cheaper plan. Now that discounts are available, its only fair that AT&T puts it in line with its other data oriented phones, not charge you the same price they charge for a RAZR to access the internet.. Think about it. You can't have your cake and eat it too, AT&T is not Sprint or T-Mobile.

F**k corporate America.

:apple: always - funny, last time I checked Apple was a corporation. And they make a great deal of profit off of schmucks like you. Why do they get a free pass?

Yep, I remember. And yep, I get that.
I just strongly disagree about AT&T getting the short end of any stick with this phone. The day they report a loss in the iPhone program, they'll get my sympathy. AT&T willingly gave up $10 for every $20 data user on this sucker because they knew they'd get ten trillion signups, and all the exposure money can't buy.

They got their cake, and now they get to eat it too.

First off, I thought the $399 iPhone was reasonably priced with the $20 data. Fair enough. I'm fine with AT&T bumping it up to $30 for the 3G access but I just wish it wasn't being marketed as half the price, when it actually costs more in the long run.

I'm not faulting anyone, though, as from Apple's perspective it is indeed half the cost. In fact, I actually applaud Apple for adding the new features and still being able to cut the hardware cost. I'm just a little disappointed at how it is marketed.

Well...
Seeing that AT&T is the exclusive carrier for the US iPhone, it is a little bit ingenuous to say "cheaper". For the world market maybe...
Also, since we do not even have 3G here in AK, this is no more than a rate hike...big time.
I'm a HUGE Apple fan. My wife has an iPhone. I was looking forward to the "next gen" of Apple styled communication. Now...not so much.
Oh yeah, Fox haters:Calm down, just put your head back into the sand. Your new messiah is coming...:p:rolleyes:;)
hickster

......Apple isnt AT&T.

The fact is that from Apples side, the price is $199, the service which ISNT apple, is the higher cost.

There is no bait and switch from apple there at all. And AT&T is doing what companies do, making money, especially to offset the nearly $200 dollar hit they take for subsidizing the phone. (waits for "they will still make a profit because of the added costs) well no friggin duh, no company is stupid enough to not turn a profit on a deal they make.

Get over it people, like it? alright buy it. Hate it? then move on and quit whining.

I still don't see any bait and switch, just typical FOX news and a bunch of crybabies.

Apple may not be AT&T, but you can't sit there and actually think that Apple and SJ weren't aware of AT&T's pricing for the subsidized iPhone. Subsidized means that Apple is getting more money from AT&T to subsidize the total cost of the phone. Don't you think that they had to agree on the pricing before the release? What do you think is really going on here? Are you such a SJ fanboy that you think he innocently stood up there and was unaware of the new AT&T pricing? Come on.

What is your deal? Why do you have a problem with people complaining on a forum? That's one thing forums are for. If members want to complain, it's their right (just like it's your right to complain about them and for me to complain about you).

It is a bait and switch. They removed the cost from the initial purchase price and just spread it out over time. And they advertised it as being cheaper, which it isn't. Bait.....and switch.

bait-and-switch
noun
the action (generally illegal) of advertising goods that are an apparent bargain, with the intention of substituting inferior or more expensive goods : [as adj. ] a bait-and-switch scheme.

Please tell me which inferior or expensive goods were switched?

They said the iPhone costs less. It does indeed cost less.

No mention of the AT&T or any other rate plan was made.

Not all rate plans are the same, indeed not all subsidies are the same.

For some people the rate plan will actually be cheaper due to IRU discounts now applying to the iPhone rate plan for AT&T.

for stating what FOX does?

even when they state facts the spin on them is rediculous.

yeah im just saying i suport obomma but all fox has done through out the election is trying to bash him every chance they get.

They said the iPhone costs less. It does indeed cost less.

It does not cost less. They just removed the $200+ dollars from the initial purchase price and tacked it onto the monthly data plan fee. And, oh yeah, text messaging is no longer included, so pay another $5/month for 200 text messages/month too.

You must love hidden fees.

How can you defend this?

I loled at your whole post

Fox news must be new this whole cellular companies business model thats been around for years.

So you pay more over two years... its still going to sell millions.

I rather pay a little more over the long period than all up front just to save $40.

That's fine. You're right, it is only 40 bucks.

However:

Just don't advertise it as being cheaper.

That's all.
