What is currently unclear is whether people can develop an application and avoid the fee and get the app on the iPhone.

Yeah, I'd be willing to bet as much as 99 clams that iPhone 2.0 will prevent apps from being added through any source other than the proprietary method, jailbreaking notwithstanding.

Lets not forget the little guys who can code to death and have some killer stuff, yet they are not even old enough to drive let alone get a job......

If it's "killer" they'll have no problem selling 200 copies at $1 each. None at all.

If they can't, I doubt it's all that great of an app.

Personally, I don't want some moron who isn't clever enough to round up 99 bananas making apps for my iPhone.

This is my feeling on it as well. And anyone who wants to recoup the nominal fee can put a very small charge on the price of the app and make their $99 back and then some.

I don't need 500 free clock apps half of which do not work properly to wade through to find something useful. So having a tiny standard of entrance is not a bad deal at all.

I'm thinking that $5 will be the sweet spot for most apps. 70% of $5 is $3.50. At that price, you only have to sell 29 copies of the app to break even.

$100 isn't bad. I just wish I had a few ideas for apps.

The Press Release sums this up pretty well:

The Standard Program costs $99 (US) per year and gives members an iPhone SDK and development tools; access to pre-release iPhone software; technical support; the ability to get code onto iPhones for testing; and distribution of applications via the new App Store.

I may have to get out my credit card so I can get my hands on the iPhone 2.0 beta. I just need to wait for it to get unlocked and activated first.

so ... if your not a developer, and dont plan on developing any apps or anything, can u still get the 2.0 beta ?

Probably not, the membership allows you to run your apps on iphone or ipod touch for which you'd need the new firmware.

With the SDK which is free you can run them in simulator, which should be enough for most people. This is great because anyone can try to make some stuff for iphone.

This is how I am gonna do it:

Download the SDK (about 60% done now).
Try it out, try to code something.
If I see future in it, I but an iPhone and get the membership. If I don;t, well, I don;t loose anything.

If you pay the $99 you should get it.

From the Apple site the $99 fee includes: "access to pre-release iPhone software"

This service is an absolute copy of Microsoft's XNA program for Windows and Xbox 360 games.

With XNA, you can develop games for free using the XNA software for Windows, but if you want to get them running on an Xbox 360 console, you have to pay $99.

It's really a deterrent to ensure that people who are going to do malicious things don't bother because they'd lose $99.

yup.

it looks like the enterprise program will have 2.0FW stuff, since they need it. However the regular 99$ one will offer the tools to get it onto your phone and tools needed for other, btu not the firmware itself, as it isnt needed for testing - the framework was in 113 +. You currently cannot copy apps to yoru phoen to test it without the package thing. How im understanding, at least.. i know the enterprise program will have the new firmware betas, the regular im not too sure. yes, ti sayd pre-release software, however you can get pre-release osx software from adc also such as new safari builds and so on.. i know you can get that with free reg, os x builds with payed seed but its also a lot more then 99$ for a membership:p

If you aren't 18, you are out of luck anyway. Apple won't even give you the free ADC online membership. The reason is that everything you do means entering into a legal contract with Apple, and certain things wouldn't be binding for you if you are not 18.

You can use the free SDK with your current (1.1.4) iPhone/iPod touch and use apps you create right now if you wanted to, no 2.0 required. I just finished watching the 'Intro to iPhone SDK' video on ADC on iTunes

These kids wont put their actual date of birth though...

please...users have the choice to install apps...I'd love apps for free, but why take a lost on making apps?

And the small, but good dev, aren't going to want to lose money(nor will big one, but the can afford to once in a while

With the SDK you can do both. Watch the ADC videos in iTunes.

you cant however, put anything on your phone without appling (adb beign accepted) for the dev program. the current xcode and everything wont assign/create the cert. required to run the program on the actual phone - it does however if you get into the dev program. Also, it works fine on 114, 2.0 is not needed, and to my knowledge only enterprise program people will get 2.0 beta(s). pre-release software form teh regular one would be tools to put the software on (through xcode) and things needed for features of the phone and enw versions of apps maybe?

After spending three minutes attempting to decipher your typos I decided to look this up.

yea, i wasn't paying attention typing at all :p That's exactly how, however, the cert required to to run the program on the phone you only get with the dev program (the $99 one, or $299 if youre a corp and have been chosen) - the certificates are needed for the program to validate and run on the phone it self, which only come with (or are generated, not sure how it works) with the dev program stuff.
