I wish rather than having to log on and all this stuff, that they detected our IMEI numbers and that way we would auto log on, and be connected to wifi when walking by starbucks, etc, even when we didn't realize it.

+1. It is actually a pain to log in. Sometimes I still (I have a Starbucks card that offers access too...) just use 3G.

Guys where is the mac laptop comments..

Would this work?

Use your laptop to login and type your phone number.
Type the text message link into your safari browser in iphone mode.
iphone+laptop=internet on your laptop ..whats the difference lol

It seems like it would work.

Yes, but this way we can log on for free with our Macs or PCs as well.

It is retarded to have to give you cell number, then wait for a text, then click the link. I will be surfing on 3G and have viewed several pages before you guys even get up and running. I mean isn't that the point of having 3G, oh and you can now connect to the itunes store over 3G. Just jailbreak, and install "VolPover 3G" through Cydia.

Nice.

Too bad I don't have an iPhone. Not that it bothers me though, as Dunn Brothers, and Caribou Coffee both have free WIFI (did from the get go), MUCH better coffee choices, and more locations in Minnesota.

I also like how they TOTALLY dropped the ball on the WIFI integration of iTunes Music Store access at Starbucks locations, and free access for iPhones and iPod Touch devices.

Nicely done Starbucks!

Mmm, yes. I had hoped this process would auto-detect the free hot spot.
But I'll gladly jump through a hoop or two for some free wifi.

I suspect this is why AT&T pulled this concept a few months back. Seems I recall that laptop users were able to tap into their initial free wifi offering.
Maybe this new process is a way to ensure an iPhone-only scenario?

I too just go this text message. It would be sweet if it worked at Barnes & Noble. I love that place. Don't frequent Starbucks all that often, at least not going to sit inside that is.

I hope this stays around though. Always nice to have FREE wi-fi hotspots!

It works ant any AT&T Wifi access point , read more

The big difference is before you could just give your friends your iPhone phone #. Or if you know someone with an iPhone, you could just use that phone number. This method requires you to have physical possession of the iPhone in order to use it. I don't think they are going to be able to restrict Laptop use, but at least it will be the laptop of the owner of the iPhone.

Not all of us have 3G. Some of us are still rocking the original iPhones.

Yeah that entire 15 seconds you'll have to wait for the text to log on is surely going to really ruin the experience....some of you will just never be happy, its sad...

Exactly.

yah sure, I'll just jailbreak and then download this and then install that and then stand on my head.

Phht.

If only this worked on non-AT&T hotspots that AT&T allows their customers to roam on. Now that would be extremely nice.

AT&T hotspots are also at McDonalds and Barnes & Noble, at least here in California. I have AT&T DSL at home, so have already had free hotspot access, but it's nice to know I can use this as a backup.

I assume since I have AT&T DSL that I can already do what I do with my macbook to get free wifi, just sign in using my email address and password.
I haven't tried yet, but it would be a pain if I had to do more than that.

or is this easier? I guess I will find out.

Some of the locations are indicated as "Premier Roaming Location." Does anyone know if those locations work as well?

Well I meant:

"Develop" tab
"User Agent"
"Mobile Safari"

I just figured everyone would know what I was talking about.

It seems like it would work.

Now, I wonder how long the address is? I'm not sure I'd feel like typing..

ex: "http://www.whatever.com/2wf4545dghvddgg667864ff"

..to log online for 5 min at starbucks.
