Curbing jailbreaking the iPHONE

I'm wondering if AT&T is offering free wifi at its hotspots as a means to curb jailbreaking the iPHONE. I would certainly think twice on using the iPHONE on other carriers if AT&T is offering this and the others aren't. Maybe in time the other carriers will follow suit...hmmm.

It has zero to do with jailbreaking, ever think they want to free up the millions of iPhone users slamming their data networK? There ya go

This is good. Lots of people were getting tired of the on and off deal. I'm also glad this isn't just limited to Starbucks AT&T hotspots because I never go there so it'd be useless for me.

I wonder if people with AT&T pay as you go NON-iPhone plans would be able to splurg on this offer. I wonder...:D

kind of a weird way for WIFI to work to login everytime you want to use it.

Here in the UK, when my iPhone detects WIFI from The Cloud or BT Openzone, it connects instantly. When you first use the WIFI, you have to enter your mobile number and thats it.

I'm not sure how this is supposed to work but I just came back from one my local Starbucks and I was able to log on to a wifi network labeled as attwifi or attws (can't remember exactly) by just going into my wifi settings and selecting that wifi network - I didn't have to type in my phone number, wait for a text message, etc.

Ok im kinda new to this whole thing and i havent actually bought an iphone 3g yet but im planning on it. The only thing that was holding me back was the $30 a month extra for data plan. Now that they have this do you still have to pay the $30 a month no matter what? Thanks

What about SMS Link, do you not understand, they send a clickable link. Read more...

I did read. I'm not talking about internet for your phone. I'm talking about getting the "clickable link" and typing it to your laptop.

You my friend are the one who didn't read.. my last post/reply.

Yeah, does this mean free wi-fi to laptop after all the rigamarole of logging in?

Guys where is the mac laptop comments..

Would this work?

Use your laptop to login and type your phone number.
Type the text message link into your safari browser in iphone mode.
iphone+laptop=internet on your laptop ..whats the difference lol

I assume since I have AT&T DSL that I can already do what I do with my macbook to get free wifi, just sign in using my email address and password.
I haven't tried yet, but it would be a pain if I had to do more than that.

or is this easier? I guess I will find out.

It's definitely not easier, because with the new system you have to jump through hoops each time.

I have AT&T DSL at home as well, and I only put my account name and password into the iPhone once,
and every time I am near a Starbucks, it automatically connects and I'm online - same as with my MacBook.

Seems like the logon procedure is somewhat clunky and unnecessarily complicated (not hard, just time-consuming on an iPhone). But, good news nonetheless, hard to argue with free.

im on it. awesome. this feature should have been available since day of of the original iphone release. good things going here. looking forward to using this for business.

Starbucks and iTunes

What ever happened to the ability to list songs playing using WiFi using your iPhone/iPod touch at a Starbucks and being able to purchase them from your device? Was that a FAIL?

Seems like an awful lot of work to use WiFi, when 3G is basically just as fast. I'd use this new feature, but the 24-hour limit and having to go through that process over and over and over again every day would get tired very fast.

A better system would be one that just recognized attempts to use WiFi by iPhones and allowed them to work. The system could even "call home" to AT&T first to verify that the iPhone's phone number or IMEI was valid and then allow use.

Yes. It's a required data plan.

If this is real (and it looks like it) this is a huge deal. I'm often at Airports with weak cell networks but a nice AT&T hotspot staring me in the face. I've never wanted to pay for one before. If this is true it will be a big selling point.

I thought airports were one of the exceptions to this new program?

Anyone else see a slight coincidence that this free AT&T wifi is announced/released 2 weeks prior to the release of the BB "Storm" and the Storm does not have wifi?

Just a thought.

Hacked iPhones ?

Will it work on a hacked iPhone that is on the T-Mobile network? The Starbucks/AT&T "2 hour" option does.

It's a little cluncky but I opened itunes on my 2g ipod touch and the first thing to pop up was starbucks. It had a stability issue because I think it was trying to pick up the now playing song so it kept looping on load. Maybe it only works with 2gs or at least version 2 touch software.

dude this is hot... and ALMOST pushes me over the edge towards finally picking up an iphone.

now, if they could just fix the 'dropped call' thing..... :D
