So did I miss something? I'm at a Starbucks and when I see the page on my iPhone, asks for a user ID, provider, and password. I tried my number as my user id, no password and number as id and password, both don't seem to be working and I've received no text. :(

Just id brings me to page saying enter my provider, id, password and select the "we can have your first born if you agree to our terms" option.

If I use id as password says bad password.

Help? :)

AT&T should create an iPhone app to automate the access process. The app could already know your phone number and do a challenge/response authentication. Since the app can only run on an iPhone, you don't have to worry about a laptop impersonating a phone to get free access. This would be much better than having to wait for an SMS. Just run the app, click "GO", and be online. As a bonus, the app could list where the nearest wifi hotspots are when it doesn't see one via wifi.

I'm wondering if the "Easy Wifi" app on iphone could be changed for this new access to ATT wifi.

But what about our laptops?

iPhone users that have their laptop on them should ALSO get free WiFi at Starbucks on their laptop.
This is unfair.

Well, I'm sitting in a Starbucks enjoying my coffee and enjoying the free wifi. When I signed in, the text message came very quickly.
Good stuff indeed.

This doesn't make sense. Text messages don't depend on wifi for transmission. So your statement about it "coming quickly" has nothing to do with you signing in.

Incase no one has replied with this (to many to read throug heh)

I have an original iphone with 2.1 jailbreaked on a go-phone pay as you go plan and i was able to use this to get free wifi at starbucks.

So for me that's a great option i'm not paying 30$ a month on internet but still get to use it :)
Huzzah! I kept my first iPhone after upgrading my work line and I've been using it on AT&T with the cards for the $20 unlimited data. The wifi will be a nice touch.

You can, just use the link that they send you in the text on your laptop. It just sucks that you cant forward the message, or copy and paste the link.

i wonder if you can access the wifi on a laptop, just bring your iphone and a laptop to starbucks and play CS all day :)

Why don't you just turn off Wi-Fi and turn it on when you need it? That will resolve your problem.

Goodness yes. I've gotten to the point where I avoid att wifi because of this. Living in $LARGE_CITY with a gazillion Starbucks and McD's means that I lose data connectivity every time a take a walk if I have network "remembered".

What's more annoying is that you can't remove the att wifi network from your saved networks unless you are connected to it. Arg.

Actually, you're the one who makes no sense. Do you actually understand how this service works?

Laptop Unsuccessful

Hey, Guys. I ran down to starbucks to try it out on my laptop.

It worked as advertised on my iPhone but not on the laptop.

Using simple user-agent hacks with safari and firefox did not work. I could access the network but I never received the iPhone login screen.

I am assuming they are using some different method for iphone determination now.

I had a video on tech-recipes using the user-agent hacks from last time.

No dice this time. :(

I kept trying until the rent-a-cop asked me what I was doing. I guess my pajamas and house-slippers were a give away. Luckily, he bought my excuse. :)

Now we know the REAL reason for which the iPhone does not have these features!! Pure genius!! :D

Um...... What?

Do you understand how the sign in process for this works? If you do, then my explanation makes perfect sense.

1. Connect to attwifi
2. Go to Safari, go to AT&T wifi sign in page, enter in phone number
3. Wait for text message to arrive
4. Click link provided in text message
5. Profit

Re: rent-a-cop

You should have said, "I'm stealin' me some Wi-Fi!!", or "You must have been a thief in another life because you just stole my heart!" - :D

Would it be so f@#$ing hard to just have it detect iphones and have them automatically logon to the wifi? I mean, seriously?

Good to see that it is finally happening... though maybe we wait a few days just in case ;)

Kinda iffy on the number of steps be better if they could do it in a more seemless manner, like based of the IMEI # or something, but I guess the amount of investment required for a "free" service would be prohibative.

Pfft. Hong Kong's had this for a while now... We got a text like a month or two ago saying that all iPhone users in Hong Kong on 3 (Hutchinson) are now eligible for a free WiFi access account on one of the 3 partners' network of hotspots or something like that.

Heh. Then again, free WiFi is easier to implement here since it IS smaller.

Does the log in screen work on the iPod Touch?
If it does then it would explain why AT&T went through all this trouble. Also you can have an iPhone from a different country or a hacked iPhone on T-Mobile log onto the network too.

P.S. I never got a text on my iPhone telling me about the service!

What does skype have to do with firmware? If they wanted to release it, they wouldn't need a new firmware version.
