In particular, I'm not sure how to run Terminal and use bin2iso on .bin files

I have the files located at /users/XXXXX/desktop/freespace 2/freespaced#.bin

Can someone tell me how to plug this in to Terminal? I've tried and it says no file found at that location, etc.

OK, I've put it in but I get -bash (path): cannot execute binary file.

cd into the Desktop directory to make life easier (use the ls and cd commands to find your way). Remember that ./ means from the directlry you're on, while / is from the root directory.

Anyway, just cd to Desktop, then put in the commands as shown in the instructions.

Or in other words... Use those.

(When you first start a shell (start up Terminal), you should already be in your home folder. To go to your Desktop, simply type in "cd ./Desktop".

./bin2iso ./(name of the first .bin file... to save typing, just press TAB for it to autocomplete for you.)

Wait for it to finish, then

./bin2iso ./(name of second .bin image... again, use TAB to make the typing easier.)

Wait a bit. And then you're done.

Problem with FileJuicer

When I run FileJuicer on the first mount, everything seems to be working for a while, then it says how FileJuicer had to close, etc. When I check out data1 Juice, it contains a jpg folder and a txt folder.

The jpg folder contains data1 part 2 of 4.jpg

The txt folder contains data1 part 1 of 4(1%copy)-1.txt and then part 2 of 4 of that same filename.

There is also an extractlog.txt, which is empty.

EDIT: Looking at the OS X Installation instructions thread, it seems someone else had the identical problem, although they said they solved it by downloading a newer version, which I already have (3.9.5). I'll try downloading and installing FileJuicer again, but it's quit "unexpectedly" 3 times in a row, about 3/4 of the way done. I checked the file size of my data1.cab file and it matched exactly with the one the guy listed in his instructions, so I'm not sure what is wrong.

Slowly getting there...

Greetings from New Zealand!

I am having a... "interesting" time getting the game running. I now have the 3 discs downloaded after getting corrupt files twice.

I have downloaded bin2iso as the instructions indicated. It is an exe so:

do l need to install in Windows (real or VPC)?
can it be made available in Mac OS X terminal? If yes, how?

Please forgive me if the answers are obvious, l am familiar with neither VPC or The Terminal.

any advice would be great!

kind regards,

David

Go to this page. Scroll about 1/4-1/2 down; someone posts a link to a bin2iso download, which when clicked will load in Terminal. It should not be an .exe file.

---

I deleted by the disc1.iso and started over from the original .zip that I'd downloaded. I guess I had improperly used bin2iso because now FileJuicer seems to be working with it. I may need to redo the disc2 and 3 .bins to make sure they were done right.

OK, I could use some help with this part:

First of all, you may want to play FS2_Open at higher resolutions than 640x480. If you want that, go into "~/Library/FS2_Open/fs2_open.ini" and open this file. In there you can modify the game's resolution and texture bits.

I got FS2 Open 3.6.7 installed, and was able to open it up, but I couldn't figure out how to get to the file mentioned so I could raise the resolution.

And
Since FS2_Open was released for PC, some people were gathered to enhance the textures, models and sounds of the game. So they produced new data files, which can be placed in the same directory as FS2_Open and enhance your graphics experience by also taking advantage of FS2_Open's new capabilities. These can be found at the official SCP homepage, in the downloads section.

When you download them, you must alter the game's command line log which is in "~/Library/FS2_Open/Data/cmdline_fso.cfg". If there is no such file, then create it. A list of available configuration options is in the release's read-me and here:

http://scp.indiegames.us/e107_plugin...stallation.php

in this link you will find instructions about how to install the game n PC (which you don't need) and the command-line information is at the bottom of the page. This is what you need to play the game

Hmmm....

Hey Verto,

Thank you for your reply . I did as instructed but the Terminal tells me that bin2iso does not exist.

should l restart, fix permissions, .... say a magic spell!

Any ideas?

David :) :)

I'm going to assume you have all the .bin and bin2iso files on your Desktop. If not, I would suggest you move them there, it made things easier for me.

Open up terminal and try to type this again:

cd ./desktop

./bin2iso ./name of first .bin file
./bin2iso ./name of second .bin

You might also try downloading the bin2iso file again and double clicking on it to let it start, then going up to the Finder and opening a new Terminal shell (at least that's what I remember doing)

Aha!

Hi again Vetro!

that may be the problem ... .bin files on my Desktop yes!

bin2iso, no.

I found the link to bin2iso and clicked on it, but nothing was downloaded. The browser screen went to a download page momentarily then vanished, l just assumed that bin2iso was automatically installed.

Methinks l was incorrect.

So l am missing bin2iso, l will try again, could the link be faulty perhaps?

I will persevere.

kind regards,

David

EDIT:

So should I go with these instructions? The ones that say..

Hi, I am [DW]-Hunter a member of the Darkwing clan http://www.darkwing.org.uk I am the owner of freespacezone, although im a pc man i can help you with a few things if you need to, if you need to download a PRE-Installed version of freespace 2, ill compress it and upload it to my mirror and send you the link. I have fixed the misslabled ISO files on freespacezone, they are properly labled BIN on mirror 1, i also want you guys to know that my mirror 1 has a 100MBps upload (your download) so if you need it quick, freespacezone is the way to go ;) Anyways i see you guys really admire freespace. I never did relize that freespace COULD run on a mac, its a strictly C++ windows oriented game. I would think you would need a well programmed windows emulator to run it (something that doesnt even exist anyways). I have unlimited webspace as well, you need some hosting of something freespace oriented, contact me and ill host it. I also host freelancer stuff as well, if any of u play on pc and play freelancer, its not the best flight sim, but its popular on multiplayer, and my clan now has its own server on there, modded and everything. If your interested in multiplayer, you will find me on there, i am admiral khafe on there and for all of you that want the original multiplayer, from the original freespace build, pxo will be back shortly, my clan administrator is incharge of that programming area for the freespace project. ([DW]-Orlanith). I'm also comming out with a few missions of mine for multiplayer, you guys might really enjoy them, they are action packed and difficult to win, just the way i like it. You want skill for freespace, multi is the way to go, all missions are difficult, and you can only play on medium + if you want the medals and MAX points play on insane, yes i know now it sound like its imposible, but it isnt that hard, by myself i can get just about all the medals, but keep in mind im a 6 year vetteran of freespace, and i get about 60 kills + on average per mission. and yes there is THAT much killing in multi, they are big battles, no where near as potent as the freespace campaign, in my view, the campaign is just training for multi, so i recommend finishing the campaign before you join me and my buddys in space. Hope you guys find this information helpful.

Hey!

I'm new to this forum.
I played Freespace 2 since 2002 on PC. In the beginning of this year I switched to Mac and wasn't missing anything but playing Freespace 2 on my Mac.

Finally I found this thread a couple of days ago.
1. Downloaded these disk images
2. Burned them on CD
3. Followed this installation instraction starting from "3." (middle of page)
And it works fine!

@mtr: Does Freespace2_Open supports Force Feedback?

I have a Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 Pro joystick and am wondering if there is a driver/software for it or somebody is able to build one. I would be reluctant to sell it if there is now way make it work coz this joystick is still no.1 (maybe one of a few things Microsoft did really great)
So, can anybody help me out here?
:(

Long Process

Hi All!

well, Getting Freespace 2 up and running is still an ongoing process for me. I have left it alone for a week or so, to get some other stuff done.

I have had the 3 disc images, converted from iso to bin, got the bin2iso utility for the Terminal. When l have tried to convert the bin files, l receive an image but when double -clicked, l received an error message "disk not mountable. That is where i was at last week. I had another try today and l have had success with Disk 2!
However Disc 1 & 3, still do not work.

Do l need to download Disks 1 & 3 again?, It will be the third time l have done so, perhaps I am having a streak of corrupt files.

It is encouraging to see that many are having success!

If re-download is necessary, where are the solid files to be found?

Cheers,

DJO:) :)

the disc 3 and 1 images were corrupt on my site, try downloading them now, i reuploaded them and yes it does support force feedback, even the original freespace build does

Ok!

Greetings (DW)-Hunter!

Thanks for your speedy reply!

I went to your site:
http://freespacezone.com/ ?

I see the files there, they are in rar format, will this be a problem on my mac?

Cheers,

DJO:) :)

Has any progress been made with an installer:D
Yes. I haven't had time to really work on the actual installer but I'm going to release a temporary one soon (probably later this weekend). It will either be the Carbon version of Loki Setup, or the installer that we will likely use for TBP in order to get a real world test of it out of the way. I'll update everyone here when it's available.

No, but I consider that a rather important issue on my todo list. The Windows version supports FF of course and that was a major part of the appeal of the FreeSpace series for me. A couple of years ago I coded in FF support for Linux but the API was pretty much a moving target and I just could never get it working properly. Interest has been shown in that again recently though so I may go back and clean up that code.

OS X has a much better API but unfortunately my joystick isn't supported (it's old so I wasn't surprised). FF support for OS X is coming but I don't know when. I will probably start coding on it later this month but I don't know how long it will take to finish. I am familiar with the Freespace side of the code and know what's needed, I just need to figure out what all I'll have to code for OS X. When it gets released is another question though since without a joystick to use with it myself I won't be able to test or troubleshoot the code. If I can convince myself to get a new FF joystick that would greatly accelerate the process but I doubt I'll go out buying that until after Christmas. Releasing untested code isn't something that I like to do, but if the coding goes smoothly I just may release a public test version and work out any bugs from there.

StuffIt Expander should handle them fine.

Easy Download

I've converted everything into a format that should be easier for OS X users.

All you have to do is download and copy it to your Applications folder (or anywhere else on your computer that you deem appropriate) and double-click!

Just keep all of the files together.

Head over to http://freespace2.bluehome.net/

Please help to conserve bandwidth: Once your download is finished, leave your BitTorrent window open and remain seeding. :)

Thankyou for that!

After 3 attempts to get an uncorrupted disc 3, l thinking maybe a full OS X friendly bt may be the way to go. There is no action with the BT at the moment O seeds in 0 peers after an hour.

Er... uhm...

Yo jxself!,

I've never had anything to do with adjusting firewall settings, l had a quick look at Mac help, l would welcome some specific instructions, if you have the time?

Cheers,

DJO:) :)
