I got this game running and it looks really good. Only problem that I've had so far is it won't recognize my joystick (at least I can't use it). I've got a macally istick run using USB overdrive and USB overdrive sees the motion with no problem. Is there a way to get this to work? Thanks for all the effort going into getting this game working for mac users.

Edit: Nevermind, I got it working...just had to assign mouse movements to the joystick.

Underway!

Hey, DJO... I've sent you a PM.

Yo!,

yup, got it thank you, d/ling since 5 hours ago , just over half-way, will let you know when it is done.

I really appreciate you doing this for me:)

Getting excited now, after hearing all the positive feedback.

Cheers,

DJO :) :)

You know what would be awesome...if Freespace could be retrofitted to be a "Escape Velocity" kind of game...set in an MMORPG. That would be cool. It's definitely fun as it is though.

Sorry, I don't fully understand the syntax for running Bin2Iso. Could someone post a more complete explanation for the unix-illiterate?

You could just download the torrent. I created it so that people don't have to do anything special. Just download, double-click and go.

Thanks, but for some reason tomatotorrent doesn't work to hot with my computer.

Can anyone concisely explain the bin2iso syntax? Something as simple as "click here" "write directory name here" etc. would be good. WTH does "sudo chmod 777" mean, for instance?

Mr jxself:
I've registered here solely to give you sir a big e-hug.
I've been wanting to play this for years, I started messing with the earlier insdtructions but frankly that command line stuff scares the pants off me.

So seriously a massive thanks from all us illiterate scum.:)

ps Soulstorm is right; Azureus is only way to go for mac based torrent shenanigans

I am also having difculty using bin2iso. If someone could explain how to use bin2iso, it would be greatly apreciated. (I already downloaded the 3 disks, if at all posible i would like to avoid having to download the torrent as well)

Status on a instaler?:D
The one using Loki Setup is pretty much done. I'm more familiar with it and the scripts can be used in both OS X and Linux versions which makes things easier for me. I haven't had any time to actually test it yet though so that's the only holdup.

(and no I won't release the installer until I've properly tested it first, so don't bother asking :))

Ok well test it and PM me if its no trouble, I am really bad dealing with scripts, so a GUI installer should do the trick for me, would I have to redownload the 3 .iso files? Thanks again!

Hey, I;m changing my question.

About multiplayer games:

Playing with the settings we finally managed to get into the game; however, the one who is not the host doesn't see the ships moving; everyone is static. He can see the missiles and the ships blow up, but they are all rooted to their original spot.

Is there any way around this? The game looks really good and we really want to give multiplayer a try!

I'm having trouble with the actual FS2_open.app
I've got all the data files and vp files in correct folders with the FS2_open app.
I double click it and it won't even launch, doesn't create any files in the library, and gets this error in the crash log:
Command: FS2_Open
Path: /Applications/Freespace2/FS2_Open.app/Contents/MacOS/FS2_Open
Version: ??? (???)
PID: 760
Thread: Unknown

Link (dyld) error:

dyld: /Applications/Freespace2/FS2_Open.app/Contents/MacOS/FS2_Open can't open library: /System/Library/Frameworks/OpenAL.framework/Versions/A/OpenAL (No such file or directory, errno = 2)

At the mo I'm playing the standard freespace2 app I downloaded from earlier in the thread and it works (crashs though on 1 in 5 missions).
But I'd like those nice shiny enhanced features and graphics- I want my specular lighting and glow maps goddammit! :D

PS what a fantastic game.

Edited the first post again to match the newly found data

@ iffy80: have you tried redownloading the application?

Hey, in your first post you state that only need that needs fixing is network play.

Are you talking about being able to connect to FS2NetD, or just any multiplayer game? Have you been able to succesfully play a 2-player game?
If so, did you configure anything in particular to make it work, or it was just with the default settings?

From the release's read-me file:

Over LAN, only TCP/IP is supported
- FS2NetD support is not functional for the moment

Yes, I know that.
And that's exactly what I tried, but no luck; you can play the game but the player who is not the host doesn't see the other ships moving, so its of no use.

That's why I am asking if you, or someone, has actually tried this and succeeded in playing multiplayer.

@iffy80: Make sure to install the OpenAL framework from http://www.openal.org. 10.4 includes it already (in which case this is a bigger problem if that's what you have) but I'm not sure about older versions of OS X, they probably don't.

re: networking... No FS2NetD yet, but it will get replaced with original PXO support anyway so I haven't spent any more time actually trying to get FS2NetD to work on PPC. I know that there are general networking issues but when you find them please file a bug on Mantis (http://lore.maxgaming.net/~scp/mantis/main_page.php) so that we can keep track of everything. If you don't file a bug then it will likely get lost and never fixed. I'll take a look at the ships-not-moving problem but I never encountered that during testing. Is this problem with OSX-to-OSX games (since that's not something I tested)?

Edit: And networking was tested before the 3.6.7 release version. I spent an extra week just on multiplayer before release. It was only tested with Linux (x86_64) to OS X (PPC) though in both host-client and client-host configs. That certainly doesn't mean that it was perfect when the code finally hit CVS though so what got released to the public may have actually been a bit broken. I'm putting it on my list of things to test out this week and if I find the problem I'll release a bugfix version over the weekend.

Yes, it was OS X to OS X.

It's like every packet but the location ones are being transmitted (of course I don't have the slightest clue how this game works under the hood, but that's the impression it gives).

It's pretty strange; if you are the host, you see everything right. If you are the client, you can move around and fire, and you can see the other ships firing. however, you see them standing still in their original positions, it never gets updated.

I will though file the bug as accurate as possible through the page you provided; I know that if you just vaguely explain a bug it will never get fixed.

Thanks a lot for the support.

I just installed Azureus again to get the torrent. I can see it either. I get no peers or seeders at all. My connection fails with the tracker.

Edit: And trackerless kicks in. This will be a fun 2 days.

Hey thanks for posting all this info! I just came across this thread today and I've gotten it installed an working great.

Could someone tell me what files to download and where to put them to upgrade the graphics? I've tried a number of them and haven't gotten any to work yet.

Edit: My bad I skipped over some of that stuff on page 4 https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/152172/
I'd still be interested in knowing what .vp files to download.
